Are there any alternative political parties?

Are there any alternative political parties?

The stance on self Id and willingness to leave EU has put me off Labour, my fallback Greens are no good. Just posted on the thread about Greens.

Lib dems pissed me off long ago. Never voted Tory. I like Theresa May but her stance on self I'd has put me off too!

I don't personally want a women only party but one started by women but with inclusive values, good policy and one so good that men want to join, but not take over!

The new anti leaving EU party did not give me an answer on self id.

So, as I asked on the Green thread. is there any anti poverty, anti self id, strong on law and punishment of crime, no soft touch, green policies and not leaving EU party?

How can we not leave EU? New referendum or maybe we leave and have another referendum to go back in?

Is there any alternative? Or is it to broad to hope for racial diversity MPs, ability/alternative ability MPs, trans MPs with GRC, and good mix females to males with strong leader?

Too much to ask?

Just been listening to this.

The only one I know of is the Whiggs (sp?) but I don't think they've done much since the last general election.

*Women’s rights

The most pressing human rights issue in Britain are to do with women’s rights. There is a moral obligation on the Government to intervene in two key areas: violence against women, and equal pay. We call for a nationally funded network of rape crisis centres, and for gender pay audits to be mandatory for large employers.*

*MÅNGFALD
Representation of women in public life

The lack of equal representation of women in our public life is a national disgrace. Just 16% of High Court judges, 22% of MPs and 24% of FTSE 100 board members are women. We either wait until the end of the century for these figures to organically rise to 50%, or we get to 50% by the end of the decade by investigating quotas. For the good of the country, the Whigs propose the latter.*

*Freedom of expression

Freedom of thought, of speech, and expression are the cornerstones of a free society. We argue against Tory and Labour attempts to restrict them under the cover of counter-terrorism and security. ‘British values’ include being confident enough to debate those who we disagree with, not silencing them.*

Tackytriceratops · 31/03/2018 13:41

But how any of that actually translates, I have no idea.

I despair... Even if there was a good alternative, our wretched electoral system would make it pointless

AreYouTerfEnough · 31/03/2018 14:05

There is no one to vote for. Democracy is dead when over half the electorate are betrayed and their safety and human rights discarded.

I wish Margaret Atwood hadn’t written that damn novel. It’s given them ideas.

MrsUnderwood · 31/03/2018 14:33

I very nearly posted this exact same thread yesterday. I’ve seen so many people, especially women, saying that they feel politically homeless as a result of Self-ID, Brexit, austerity and anti-Semitism in the major parties. I feel completely disenfranchised.

Which begs the question- why don’t we start our own party?

AreYouTerfEnough · 31/03/2018 16:12

Starting our own party won’t be effective because of our electoral system. It would also be expensive to set up and labour intensive to run. You would need some wealthy backers. Misogynistic attitudes wouldn’t allow it to flourish either. I don’t know what the answer is.

Italiangreyhound · 31/03/2018 18:03

Can we do it on the cheap? As a protest? A virtual party/ experiment? See how much traction we got? As a protest?

I think anyone can register a party. That part isn’t expensive or anything. I guess we could try. You don’t get anywhere without trying.

Tackytriceratops · 31/03/2018 21:42

What would the name be?

This has been discussed before here and I actually feel a party would get more recognition across the board if it didn't include the words 'women' - except I see that that is what we'd mostly be fighting for.

Italiangreyhound · 31/03/2018 23:25

I think @Tackytriceratops I'd like to fight for fairness. For everyone. I Don't like the fact men can't exiress their feelings, just because I am more concerned for women don't mean I don't care about men.

I'd really like to work out how we can stay in the EU too!

Wow mrsunderwood your description sums up how I feel Politically Homeless

What do I do. I was Labour to my core. I am sad and don't know where to turn.

dorothyparka · 31/03/2018 23:46

What would the name be?
The Politically Homeless Party

MrsUnderwood · 01/04/2018 00:14

Much as I’d love “women” in the title, it makes it effectively single issue and turns off half the voting demographic. And men need decent policies too. I’d be well up for policies encouraging shared parental leave for example.

The name... gah. I did fleetingly have a good one earlier but then I got drunk and watched Star Wars.

MrsUnderwood · 01/04/2018 00:26

@areyouterfenough I fully agree that with the current electoral system and the amount of money you need to throw around, it is all but a lost cause, but I cannot stand the idea of not voting, spoiling my ballot or voting for a party who do not give a shit about my entire sex. Women hurled themselves under racehorses for my right and I want to be able to use it to vote for a party that I agree with.

Italiangreyhound · 01/04/2018 00:39

@MrsUnderwood "Women hurled themselves under racehorses for my right and I want to be able to use it to vote for a party that I agree with."

I so much agree with this.

I am so concerned for young people who are being transitioned in this un-brave new world.

How about something upbeat... "New home".

OP posts:
MrsUnderwood · 01/04/2018 08:20

New Home is a lovely sentiment. Might confuse people as to what it refers to- people might think it’s just about housing?

Maybe it would help to list out what we’d want in a political party? For me it’s:

Reinforcing sex based protections for women.
Ensuring that gender non-conforming people are afforded equal rights and dignity within the law.
Evidence based policies for drugs, medicine and education.
Campaign for 2nd EU referendum- pro Remain
Robust social housing policies- end right to buy, build council housing
Banning fracking and encouraging investment in green energy
Fully funded NHS and social care
Zero-tolerance for racism, anti-Semitism
Nordic model on prostitution
Local focus- politics is far too London centric.
Strong labour protections

As well as:
Having people who are actual experts steering policies
Having strong representation of people from diverse backgrounds- not just a bunch of white public schoolboys or spotty brocialists. Significant numbers of candidates who are from ethnic minority backgrounds, who are gay, lesbian, trans, who are disabled. At least 50% of the candidates fielded should be women.

Avallamp · 01/04/2018 08:41

You've heard of this party?
www.womensequality.org.uk

Avallamp · 01/04/2018 08:44

From their website...

"About the Women's Equality Party
Equality for women isn't a women's issue. When women fulfill their potential, everyone benefits. Equality means better politics, a more vibrant economy, a workforce that draws on the talents of the whole population and a society at ease with itself."

They were an alternative (minority) party started to address a lot of the feelings you're expressing, and actually field candidates. What's the point of a minority party? Just ask UKIP!

MrsUnderwood · 01/04/2018 09:26

Ava they seem to not be robustly opposing Brexit and appear to have drunk the Trans Kool Aid

Italiangreyhound · 01/04/2018 14:07

@MrsUnderwood

Brilliant.I'd vote for you in a heartbeat.

Don't women's equality party believe in self id? If so they are useless.if I wanted to vote for self Id vote for Labour! Plus any party with 'women' in the title will never get in.

MrsUnderwood, i wish thid could be a reality. I'm not in a place right now to start a political party but I'd canvas like a mad thing for one I believed in.
