Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

We should make a documentary about self ID

There is so much information that is not being disseminated accurately and without bias. Waiting for the MSM to pick up the story and report honestly is frustrating - although I appreciate it is happening.

What about making a documentary with interviews and debates and evidence? Surely someone here has these skills. A few ideas:

Interviews with de-transitioners
Interviews with doctors and patients who have taken the puberty blocking drugs for other reasons, and discussing side effects
Clips of TV debates with an opportunity to answer points raised in a less pressured environment
Evidence of harm done to women who just want to be heard

Is this a pipe dream? Because YouTube videos are all well and good but distributing a film at independent cinemas would be amazing.

Go ahead. MNetters will back you!

UpstartCrow · 22/03/2018 20:55

I'd support a crowdfund. This is a human rights issue.

athingthateveryoneneeds · 22/03/2018 21:00

I need someone who knows what they are doing to take the helm! I'm not trained in film making. Though I could probably middle through some interviews.

I’m a trained journo

There’s loads
On here actually

athingthateveryoneneeds · 22/03/2018 21:11

Fab. Would be great to get a group of people together to formulate a plan.

No useful skills at all but I’d donate to help

ElenOfTheWays · 23/03/2018 00:03

This is a good idea, it's expensive though.

I would be happy to donate to a crowdfunder to help.

I've been thinking, myself, that we need a proper public information campaign of some kind. I'm always taken aback when I realise how few people know anything about what's going on.

And, let's face it, the Government isn't going to do it.

athingthateveryoneneeds · 23/03/2018 06:44

What about something shorter than a documentary, more like a public service announcement? 10-15 minutes long. Get people to show it in their homes and community centres with q&a and refreshments afterwards.

I'd donate to a crowdfunder if there were a film maker out there able to take such a thing on.

busyboysmum · 23/03/2018 07:20

Maybe speak to some of the leading lights there's loads of articulate speakers out there who would be great.

RogerAllamsFangirl · 23/03/2018 08:39

I could probably help with a script - though no more so and probably less than some of the wonderfully eloquent women on these threads. Can also contribute to a crowdfund but no other useful contacts or skills I'm afraid.

I think it's a great idea, and I'd add interviews with trans widows and parents of trans children, definitely detransitioners.

Importantly it should celebrate gender non conformity and emphasise how regardless of one's identity sex differences are important, shouldn't be ignored, and can't be fundamentally changed.

Funding could go towards travel costs, use of equipment, gifts for those who take part, payment for editor/producer. It doesn't need to be hugely expensive.

Something does urgently need to go out there, NO mainstream broadcasters will touch this issue from a GC perspective. They will not go near it. The onslaught of complaints / threats from TRAs, even mobs of them outside shouting, it's not worth their workload.

So it needs to be an independent project. I am doubtful an independent cinema would be able to show it, as believe me the cinema would be under attack.

So you may well be left with YouTube but if it's done well, it could be a great success.
Worth trying.

Regularhuey · 23/03/2018 10:59

A series of three 10-15 min shorts could cover more angles.

averylongtimeago · 23/03/2018 11:01

Also it should include trans people who live normal lives along side the rest of us, without invading, shouting down, making threats of violence. Miranda Yardley springs to mind, there are a number who post on here.
I don't think we are transphobic on here but without "reasonable" trans voices it would be seen to be.

Regularhuey · 23/03/2018 11:05

Trans voices from people who have genuine dysphoria definitely need to be included.
There is an opportunity to interview openly AGP males (tims) too.

BlooperReel · 23/03/2018 11:24

I tweeted Stacey Dooley asking for her to look into this, Someone Needs to cover it in a way that is not glossing over transitioning and making it seem like a fairytale happy ended, clipping out all the factual information, failing to mention Self ID and it's implications. I'm looking at you BBC

Lifeaback · 23/03/2018 11:41

I have a background in film. I think to get the message across to a widespread audience, the documentary would need to be something broadcast through one of the main channels. I have a friend working for a production company who often pitch to the commissioning editors at the BBC- I'll have a chat to her to see if anything like this is currently in the pipeline. It seems as though there is a lot of 'pro' trans documentaries to educate the public but none which look at it from this angle, I definitely agree it's a very needed film

Lifeaback · 23/03/2018 11:43

Just read what regular posted and it's just clicked how impossible it is for one of the main broadcasters to cover it because of the backlash they would receive. Independent makes much more sense and is more feasible- I no longer work in film but still have lots of contacts so will rack my brains and see if I can come up with a freelance filmmaker who might be interested in taking this on

StandingOvulation · 23/03/2018 11:45

Absolutely a great idea. It seems like BBC3 would be a good fit for this, but perhaps a bit youth orientated?

Would definitely support a crowd fund.

OvaHere · 23/03/2018 11:49

There is a great independent film on Netflix at the moment about the rise of the Women's movement in the US. Granted the team behind this are American but maybe they would be interested.

Watch this space

athingthateveryoneneeds · 23/03/2018 14:15

This all fantastic brainstorming. I totally agree we need to look at all the facets of this issue, including clips or interviews with TRAs themselves.

I wish I could do something to push this forward but I am eagerly watching for other people's contributions.

It would be helpful to document all of the abuse women face when they do speak out about these issues. This is one of the most swept under the rug aspects of the entire trans issue, at least in the mainstream.

Self-id is really a good starting place, it would be great to have a series documenting all the different issues involved.

Would happily support through crowdfund.
