Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

We should make a documentary about self ID

There is so much information that is not being disseminated accurately and without bias. Waiting for the MSM to pick up the story and report honestly is frustrating - although I appreciate it is happening.

What about making a documentary with interviews and debates and evidence? Surely someone here has these skills. A few ideas:

Interviews with de-transitioners
Interviews with doctors and patients who have taken the puberty blocking drugs for other reasons, and discussing side effects
Clips of TV debates with an opportunity to answer points raised in a less pressured environment
Evidence of harm done to women who just want to be heard

Is this a pipe dream? Because YouTube videos are all well and good but distributing a film at independent cinemas would be amazing.

I know a camera operator who may well be prepared to donate skills. I'll ask.

Aside from that, I don't have much to offer other than supporting a crowdfund. Great idea though and I agree - something that counteracts all the gaslighting that's going on is way overdue.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 23/03/2018 14:39

Place marking.

BlackeyedSusan · 23/03/2018 14:48

wow.

between you, you know so many people.

I think that short films 10/15 minutes would be great for Youtube - Addressing one issue or debunking one issue at a time. I think that something made for a young audience would be great because there are a lot of YouTube influencers out there (I'm looking at YOU Riley J Dennis) and kids need an alternative perspective.

I was speaking to someone on twitter - trying to raise the issue with them because they really knew nothing about it. At first she was polite but said - "I wish we could all get along - violence on both sides - let's fight patriarchy together." After much back and forth and a very wide ranging discussion what really won her over was hearing the about Mermaids and the puberty blocker thing. I think that can really strike a cord with people - not allowing kids to be kids, go through puberty and decide these things when they're adults.

Great idea BTW. I was thinking the same myself although I have no real experience

What are peoples thoughts on a Loose Change style transcult documentary. Everyone loves a good conspiracy theory but this one is true! Would it undermine our arguments if they can dismiss us as crazy. Then again - Donald Trump is the president. Truth is less important than peoples feeling now isn't it?

Tootsweets23 · 23/03/2018 15:12

I work in TV and been thinking of talking to a production company about pitching this idea to broadcasters. I think there is also definitely scope for informational videos on the implications of self ID for everyone, including trans people.

athingthateveryoneneeds · 23/03/2018 15:49

@Tootsweets23 let's write a pitch. No idea how but willing to be a part of the conversation to help formulate ideas.

No skills but I'd happily contribute to a crowd fund.

I do know someone who works for the BBC, both in radio and TV. Might be worth asking about possible contacts there re skills.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 23/03/2018 16:40

I don't have any useful skills either, but I'd also donate to a crowd fund.

changeypants · 23/03/2018 17:15

i think someone like jon ronson would be good for this. there's so much to investigate - see the thread about twitter bans for instance.

Tootsweets23 · 23/03/2018 19:21

Sounds good! Needs a name attached, preferably a woman - anyone know someone with profile who cares about this?

Viewofhedges · 23/03/2018 19:45

I think it is a subject that should be covered, but I think this needs careful editorial consideration.

It needs to be handled in a neutral way - think Louis Theroux? - so that broadcasters / distributors can feel confident that they will not be accused of taking sides. Any presenter would have to ask extremely carefully worded neutral questions, allowing both sides of the argument to speak for themselves and ultimately to ensure that no accusations of bias or editorial bias can be made. You’d have to give differing views equal air time etc., and simply allow the facts to speak for themselves.

You also need to consider the safety of those who make the doc, both in front of and behind the camera.

I think it’s a really important topic. It’ll take courage to make it though, so I would encourage careful thought. As a filmmaker I know exactly how to pull something together, but I think the politics and safety concerns, plus ensuring that a programme is made that can be broadcast to the biggest audience possible, should be major factors in planning.

Alternatively, simply documenting the journey of a movement such as Man Friday, while it is in its infancy, again from an entirely neutral standpoint to ensure distribution, might also be considered, and certainly from a historical point of view, it’s an important movement.

BlackeyedSusan · 23/03/2018 20:09

Having read another thread, it may also be an idea to include info how it is normal to feel a bit weird about your body going through puberty. Get out the message that some things are normal and does not necessarily mean you are gay/trans/straight now. Feelings fluctuate, etc.

BlackeyedSusan · 23/03/2018 20:10

I like the manfriday idea

WichBitchHarpyTerfThatsMe · 23/03/2018 20:46

I wonder if Amy and Hannah would be up for it? Or is it too much to ask of them given how far they've already raised their heads above the parapet and gone public with what they've already done?

athingthateveryoneneeds · 23/03/2018 20:57

Absolutely, @Viewofhedges, I think a neutral tone rather than an obvious propoganda piece is incredibly important.

Who could do such a thing, though? Is it too late to find someone? The fear is everywhere. Feelings are so strong on both sides.

BlackeyedSusan · 24/03/2018 00:12

you can make anything you like but if it only gets 3 views from your mum on you tube it is not going to be effective.

it might be better to have a more neutral film and get more views, andfollow up with something else later.

or more than one film could be made by differnet teams
etc, etc.

Birdbandit · 24/03/2018 08:20

Brilliant idea.

LangCleg · 24/03/2018 08:38

Sadly neither skills nor contacts here but I would also donate to a crowdfunder.

MacaroonMama · 24/03/2018 10:19

My good friend Zan is a film-maker and has been thinking about doing this for a while! V interested in getting a kickstarter fundraising thing started.

She is not on Mumsnet (though I am always sending her links to read!) but asked that I share her details - her website is www.boundarypictures.com, and she is the director there. Would someone like to contact her? She is v experienced and a great storyteller.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 24/03/2018 10:22

Another one with no skills to add but more than happy to donate.

BlackeyedSusan · 24/03/2018 15:40

One myth that needs to be debunked is that those who want single sex spaces are calling trans children sex offenders. This came up on any answers.

athingthateveryoneneeds · 24/03/2018 16:35

@MacaroonMama thanks! I will email her this weekend.

@BlackeyedSusan absolutely. I've never heard this argument? I have seen the comment that a transgirl may want to share the same dorms on school trips for various reasons, but not to commit sex offenses.
