Apologies for the essay below:

We desperately need you to contact your MSP re the bill which was passed today. There is a great explanation of the situation here from Dr Nic Williams of Fair Play for Women

In a nutshell, the Scottish government have now redefined the legal meaning of the word "woman". It has now been expanded to include:
"A person who has the protected characteristic of gender reassignment...if, and only if, the person is living as a woman, and is proposing to undergo, is undergoing, or has undergone a process, or part of a process, for the purpose of becoming female

They have passed this bill in anticipation of changes to gender recognition law in Scotland. That's the law that hasn't been passed, indeed the law which has only just concluded it's consultation period.

We urgently need people to write to their MSPs, or better still meet them, to register your protest against this bill and the lack of consultation. Even the Equality and Human Rights Commission have raised questions about the bill - they have been ignored.

Why should the Scottish government get to redefine the word woman without so much as a by our leave? Why do they think we should accept men as part of our sex class? Why do they constantly conflate sex with gender, mixing them up so nothing is clear anymore? Just exactly what happened in Scottish government to make them think the beliefs of a tiny minority should influence policy?

Please, please please please, make your voice heard. Write to your MSP, tell your friends to do the same, meet your MSP and tell them that you do not accept this. I can help with letters if anyone needs any pointers but the strongest way to object is to write a personal letter telling your MSP exactly what you think.

TL, DR: Please write to your MSP re today's bill to register your protest

My MSP is SNP.

I have ALWAYS voted SNP (for the last 30 years), and am a fully paid up member of the SNP (& active in my support)

However, I have just sent a letter to my MSP advising her of my vehement opposition to this. Advising her that I will no longer vote SNP (not sure who I'll vote for now!), and telling her to cancel my membership immediately.

I am very unhappy,

Willow2017 · 22/03/2018 12:46

Can I get a template too please, will personalise it.
THanks

FannyFifer · 22/03/2018 12:51

Can you Pm me the letter as well & will personalise it.

To the person above, your MSP can't cancel your membership, you will need to contact SNP HQ directly.

Mxyzptlk · 22/03/2018 12:51

People not in Scotland could write to your MPs, saying why you are alarmed by this and do not want it to become law in the rest of the UK.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 22/03/2018 12:59

House

If you haven't cancelled it, why not go to your local meeting and try to raise the issue? You can bet that many won't know about this

Badgerthebodger · 22/03/2018 13:10

Does anyone know where we can check who voted for it? Sorry I am in England and a bit unsure of where to look.

The legislation only changes the definition of woman. TIFs will therefore be classified as women unless they have a GRC.

RipleyAlien · 22/03/2018 13:37

PaleBlueMoonlight - what do you mean “only”? I don’t think I’ll be alone in thinking that changing the legal definition of a woman is a big deal and not something that should be left unchallenged.

Mxyzptlk · 22/03/2018 13:38

Thanks for that, BetsyM00.
We can state in the letter that we know our MSP voted for this.

GruffaloPants · 22/03/2018 13:58

Is there a template online somewhere? I can't message in the app and have forgotten my log in!

Alternatively a few bullet points to help me focus would be appreciated! I'm so pissed off my letter would just read "Dear MSP, aargh!" at the moment.

aaahhhBump · 22/03/2018 14:35

Me too. GruffaloPants I am able to bombard their Twitter feed though.

Willow2017 · 22/03/2018 14:39

only changes the definition of a woman !!!!
Ffs we dont need another 'definition of a woman'. We all know what a woman is thank you.

CharlieParley · 22/03/2018 14:43

So...I'm going to see my MSP (if I can squeeze it in tomorrow, if not Saturday). It's his constituency surgery and I know him enough to have to be coherent and above all appear sane. Right now I just feel like venting and/or having a bloody good scream (I could feel myself getting riled up just talking to his office staff who are lovely people).

I don't mind outing myself as a women's rights campaigner but please help me make sense.

Given that this legislation has passed, I was thinking of just raising the issue with him and gently finding out what he knows about the issue but I'd be very grateful if anyone had any pointers for me.

GruffaloPants · 22/03/2018 14:50

I've used the blog linked to at the start to help me compose myself/the email!

Have now sent to my MSP. Given the bill has passed I think the ship has sailed, but perhaps we can use this to open the discussion for future "proposed" legislation. Proposed very much in inverted commas as I doubt Superman could halt the juggernaut of the GRA legislation.

CharlieParley · 22/03/2018 14:55

I should add my MSP is on the committee that passed this bill

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 22/03/2018 15:46

^only changes the definition of a woman !!!!

I think this person meant that it does not also change the definition of man. So man = male, TIMs / TIFs / women = female

PaleBlueMoonlight · 22/03/2018 15:56

Was just answering an earlier question about whether trans men would be counted as men or women under this legislation. Used the world “only” to mean solely, nothing more.

Orphangirl · 22/03/2018 17:41

Well I'm going to sleep on this, it's possible I'll feel calmer in the morning. But have drafted an email to my msp (Ruth Davidson) to say if the Tories are aginst this they'll have my vote next time.

Orphangirl · 22/03/2018 17:43

Oh lordy just checked the voting and Ruthie voted for. WTF.

Theswaggyotter · 22/03/2018 18:14

@Badgerthebodger can I have pm as well please

OlennasWimple · 22/03/2018 18:42

Perhaps the way into the conversation with MSPs is to ask whether they realised that the bill had the effect of changing the definition of "woman" to include "men"? I'm sure that most of those who voted for it did so with the best intentions (to increase female representation on boards), without realising the Trojan Horse in front of them

Ekphrasis · 22/03/2018 20:03

How do you check the voting on this?

Ekphrasis · 22/03/2018 20:03

Stunned they say a man can become female.

Waddlelikeapenguin · 22/03/2018 20:44

Does anyone have an idea if post or email is better?
Also how long is too long?
