Apologies for the essay below:

We desperately need you to contact your MSP re the bill which was passed today. There is a great explanation of the situation here from Dr Nic Williams of Fair Play for Women

In a nutshell, the Scottish government have now redefined the legal meaning of the word "woman". It has now been expanded to include:
"A person who has the protected characteristic of gender reassignment...if, and only if, the person is living as a woman, and is proposing to undergo, is undergoing, or has undergone a process, or part of a process, for the purpose of becoming female

They have passed this bill in anticipation of changes to gender recognition law in Scotland. That's the law that hasn't been passed, indeed the law which has only just concluded it's consultation period.

We urgently need people to write to their MSPs, or better still meet them, to register your protest against this bill and the lack of consultation. Even the Equality and Human Rights Commission have raised questions about the bill - they have been ignored.

Why should the Scottish government get to redefine the word woman without so much as a by our leave? Why do they think we should accept men as part of our sex class? Why do they constantly conflate sex with gender, mixing them up so nothing is clear anymore? Just exactly what happened in Scottish government to make them think the beliefs of a tiny minority should influence policy?

Please, please please please, make your voice heard. Write to your MSP, tell your friends to do the same, meet your MSP and tell them that you do not accept this. I can help with letters if anyone needs any pointers but the strongest way to object is to write a personal letter telling your MSP exactly what you think.

TL, DR: Please write to your MSP re today's bill to register your protest

Please pm me as well.

So angry right now I can hardly see straight to read about this!

thebewilderness · 22/03/2018 00:42

This is one of the most outrageous examples of misogynist social engineering to come along in many a year.

SpringNowPlease2018 · 22/03/2018 00:44

Safe to assume the definition of "man" hasn't changed?

Janie143 · 22/03/2018 03:14

You can find all your MSPs here
www.theyworkforyou.com

Ironic email address right there

TheMasterNotMargarita · 22/03/2018 04:33

PM please @Badgerthebodger.
Ffs.

Igneococcus · 22/03/2018 06:23

I'll write to my MP but I have no, and I mean absolutely no, hope, he'll listen. He'll probably stop breathing if Nicola Sturgeon tells him to.

Does anyone have contacts to the press? It needs to be reported and explained somewhere.

ChattyLion · 22/03/2018 06:27

Exactly Badger that consultation was virtue signalling nonsense on stilts. But at least it (rightly) gave us a chance to respond. I find it really frightening this disdain for even pretending to be going through the motions of a government process on this issue. That’s not to mention the issue itself that is being forced through in this instance. Can women outside of Scotland help with this?

ArcadianBlues · 22/03/2018 06:32

Is it only the word "woman" that has been redefined, not "man"? There should be an equivalent redefinition of "man" to cover transmen FTM

If you’re on Twitter please tweet this article at whoever you can think of, including Nicola Sturgeon and Ruth Davidson.

Lones80 · 22/03/2018 06:42

Could I have a PM too please

Finlaggan · 22/03/2018 06:44

Can I have a PM please badger.

catlady45 · 22/03/2018 07:02

Maybe someone could explain this better to me...

To me it reads as though they are setting out legislation to ensure those that are going to go through the process of gender re-assignment will be protected under law. I dont see the issue with this .

Its a little different to men simply identifying as women and not undergoing any of the hormones/gender reassignment to make them aesthetically so.

Could someone please explain it to me?

failingatlife · 22/03/2018 07:04

Pm me too please. This is awful AngrySad

SangriaInTheSun · 22/03/2018 07:05

I'd like one too please. you

PaleBlueMoonlight · 22/03/2018 07:25

This is appalling.

Freshlylaidterf · 22/03/2018 07:34

Thanks Badger
Iv pm you. A template will be really useful but as we know we must remember to personalise too as often templates are ignored.

Testingnamechange1 · 22/03/2018 07:35

This needs an AIBU thread!

AgentProvocateur · 22/03/2018 07:38

Could you please PM me the template and il personalise and adapt. I don’t have much free time at the moment with work and other stuff, but anyone’s organising a meet-up to discuss this, I’ll try and be there.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 22/03/2018 07:43
  1. It is saying that someone who goes through gender reassignment IS a woman for the purposes of this legislation, rather than being treated as a woman for legal purposes (which is what the GRA does).
  1. It does not require the transitioning person to have a GRC.
  1. It changes the Equalities Act definition of gender reassignment while at the same time purporting to follow it.
  1. It is creating a precedent (not a legal precedent, but a drafting precedent) for legislative purposes
  1. It confuses gender and sex.
PaleBlueMoonlight · 22/03/2018 07:46

*off the top of my head, from a cursory perusal. I.e. am prepared to be told I am wrong!

trixymalixy · 22/03/2018 07:50

Please PM me too. I'm Scottish and furious about this.

The SNP have form for just ignoring what the majority in Scotland actually think and just pressing on though, so not hopeful we'll have any effect.

Freshlylaidterf · 22/03/2018 07:50

Iv just looked on the list on the fairplay for women site and my MP voted for. the bill, I'm just hoping that he actually had no clue what he was voting for and not that he's a mysoginist.

SweetGrapes · 22/03/2018 07:53

This is absolutely chilling. How dare they!

They have overstepped their remit as civil servants. The equality act has woman as an adult female. They have picked an incorrect definition.

Am not in scotland but happy to help in any way.

AdaTwist · 22/03/2018 08:05

It's also vague about what "process" would count - taken a few female hormones (or indeed planning to) would presumably suffice.
