Have just seen this on Twitter. Trying to get my head around it, so am hoping that somebody a lot more clued up than me can shed some light on it. I just know that it's not likely to be a good thing.

"The Scottish Govts newly passed gender bill, the Gender Representation on Public Boards (Scot) Bill, has redefined the language used in the GRA. A person is no longer reassigned a gender. This legislation now defines it as 'becoming female'."

it may well be an unwelcome change in approach to definitions
Agreed. This just too depressing. Looks like its yet another letter to my msp

This shows the amendments where becoming female is mentioned. And the te break. Make of this what you will. These are politicians.

And this from a Labour woman MSP. It looks to me that this says any man who is part of a class with a protected characteristic under the Equality Act gets a place over a woman. So aman with a disability, or a black or minority ethnic man, gay man.
It’s totally weird living in Scotland. Bananas place where government decides to eliminate material reality.

You can say that again. Iv been sitting fuming and I cant even articulate my thoughts to get them down on paper to my msp. Im not even sure what angle to approach it from since its now law.

SnibbleAgain · 21/03/2018 19:18

Hmmm

disability and trans status are self defined aren't they?

Religon is also a protected characteristic I think - which is also often self defined

So, door open for any man who wishes to have the ability to take a space over a woman,

This is a massive pushback isn;t it.

As I understand it, it's OK and normal to have white middle class men running everything,
But the spaces which are for "diversity" people must not be taken by white middle class women

While it is true that while middle class women are more likely than other sorts of women to get to positons of power, well paid etc,

This doesn't mean that it's a good idea to take them all out and give the spaces to men who say they have a disability, instead, for example.

Leave the women there and give some of the over-represented men's spaces to disabled men etc

This idea that white middles class women are THE WORST is a patriarchal pushback as at the moment, they are the only ones who have managed to actually get anywhere, and it's a good way of pushing them back out again.

gardengeek I got it from Twitter thread by Scottish Wome. Should have said! And will try to confirm. But have to say Scottish Women on twitter knows her stuff and is usually v reliable.
We won’t take it lying down. We can organise against this. There are women from all walks of life in Scotland who are willing . I must just clarify, this is about representation on public bodies, not about GRA or about applying for normal public sector jobs.

I'm just shocked, honestly we are fucked aren't we?

Freshlylaidterf · 21/03/2018 21:02

Bejazzled
I understand it does feel like that but I agree with runningwild. We can organise.

Bejazzled · 21/03/2018 21:14

freshlylaid
But how? There is not one major political party or even individual major politician willing to take it on. The petition asking the UK government for women to be consulted isn't gaining momentum. The BBC is holding a 'special' Question Time which anyone who isn't naive can see is going to be loaded in one direction.
Any female voice raising a concern is either shouted down, ignored, or dissed as being trans-phobic.
I'm honestly just so dispirited. Sorry.

Freshlylaidterf · 21/03/2018 21:24

Dont be be sorry. Its little wonder given all that is going on as you have said. I cant think of anything just now - too tired and fed up. I have started a letter to my MSP though. Hopefully with a fresh head tomorrow I will get some inspiration. Maybe other Scotland mumsnetters on here have some ideas. May post in AIBU about ' changing to female' wording if im feeling brave enough. Remember the #manfriday women too. Now theres inspiration!

Agerbiltatemycardigan Thanks for this. This explains it all. I don’t know how to bump thi so people see it.

Agerbilatemycardigan · 21/03/2018 23:03

You could always do a copy and paste and post it somewhere else?

OP posts:
Bejazzled · 21/03/2018 23:20

Ive just done that Agerbil

I'm utterly ashamed to be a Scottish woman at the moment.

Agerbilatemycardigan · 21/03/2018 23:21

I feel so bad for all the Scottish women who've just been chucked under the trans bus.

OP posts:
PlectrumElectrum · 21/03/2018 23:23

I'm fucking fuming about this.

Angry

I genuinely feel sick at what they've done with this.

ScienceIsTruth · 21/03/2018 23:36

I can't see past this atm. I'm really disappointed and scared for the future of women's rights.

This is the only solution that I can think of just now:

I'm now thinking that we should all club together and buy a big, uninhabited island somewhere and all fuck off there (with our families) and leave these idiots to their Orwellian nightmare.

Agerbilatemycardigan · 21/03/2018 23:39

I was talking to an American on Twitter, and she's wanting to do just that. She's looking to buy a large piece of land and make it women only.
