Not really a fan but DS likes him so we’ve just sat and watched his new stand up show on Netflix.

I was pulling this face Shock

He certainly isn’t pulling any punches on the subject of dead naming, being forced to believe ‘transwomen are women’ or Caitlin Jenner etc.

He’s got to be getting a lot of abuse for that surely?!

I was waiting for a thread about this to start.

I think he did a pretty good job of demonstrating the absurdity of it all. Starts from 7 minutes in.

BeyondDeadlySiren · 14/03/2018 15:41

Yy faith.

Everyone has to be 100% in agreement with everything that people say all the time. It's so tribal and I find it really weird.

People may not agree with some of the jokes he makes around disability - I don't find every single thing he says funny either - but that doesn't make all of the good things he says go away. And there are a fair few good things (look at how passionate he is about animal rights for eg)

BeyondDeadlySiren · 14/03/2018 15:43

I was annoyed by the peanut thing, personally. RG seems the type of person to me who would understand that aeroplanes use recirculated air.

BRHaunton · 14/03/2018 15:46

I think, as with all comedians, it’s a fine line between pointing out unpalatable truths so we can all get it out in the open, and stepping too far over the line into ‘too far’ territory.

I think that first part he did really well last night.

I wasn’t a fan before but I did actually like this show and find it funny (I haven’t really see any old stuff)

There were a few Hmm moments when watching it. I thought I was being inculcated into the sect of finding all things what ever they are funny.

Mind you I do have to tell my own funeral joke.

When my dad died he was brought back to the house and his coffin laid out in the best room. Now this did freak out a few of the cousins not used to such traditions. Later that night we were all reminiscing about old times and actually having great fun and laughing. Then my brother went ''QUIET' we're making too much noise; we don't want to wake the dead up!'

At which point...

EllieMe · 14/03/2018 16:16

Good grief CaptainKirk get a grip. My opinion no need for multiple replies.

Elendon · 14/03/2018 16:19

What I like about Gervais is that he doesn't actually care if people find him funny or not.

His latest tweet has asked for advice on the show. Most say it wasn't long enough- BORING I'm not on twitter so can't give him my views.

Personally, drop the word cunt.
Don't do rape.
I want to know more about male ageing and can you please start bath accessory of floating testicles - all trans people included.
The wig sketch was priceless.

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 14/03/2018 16:20

Not really an opinion if you are telling other people what to do.
I'm expressing an opinion too, however I'm not telling people they have to agree with it, you are.

EllieMe · 14/03/2018 16:24

But so many times? Grip needed.

If any of you are on Twitter he is asking for feedback.

TheMonstrousRegiment · 14/03/2018 19:44

*@EmpressOfJurisfiction * Thank you for your response, good to knowSmile.

Pleased to read he's an animal activist too. I generally don't pay any mind to celebrities, but it's nice to hear when some are doing good things.

fruitlovingmonkey · 14/03/2018 21:30

It is a very clever piece.

LassWiADelicateAir · 14/03/2018 22:03

Yes me too. I don't find him funny. The Office was too realistic and cruel to be funny and I am not sure if he is a brilliant actor or just being himself. However I do approve of his anumal rights activism.

Damonlufc88 · 15/03/2018 06:52

It's comedy, it's humour. The whole set is pretty much aimed at a topic like this where, in 2018 people get offended way to easily and think its a person's right to look to get offended.

Lighten up.

Damonlufc88 · 15/03/2018 06:56

Also he throws in a couple of very risqué but funny dead baby jokes in for good measure

MorbidMuch · 15/03/2018 16:43

I don't find him funny, but I'm glad he promotes freedom of speech. He peaktransed my husband yesterday.

DH watched it on Netflix, then tried to tell me about the issues as he was so shocked. I reminded him that I've been trying to talk to him about it for ages and gave him an update on recent situation.

He kept saying, "But why are they being allowed to do this? I just don't get it."

cheminotte · 15/03/2018 18:07

No offence to your DH Morbid but sometimes men need to hear it from another man. NAMALT etc etc.

MorbidMuch · 15/03/2018 21:55

Yes, Cheminotte, you're right that men often listen more to what other men say. My DH is generally a good egg, but I can see him tuning out at times. I have managed to get him passed saying NAMALT.

This is why I'm pleased that men like RG are starting to speak out too.

MrSlant · 15/03/2018 23:21

Damn, I started today, well I started today as what I thought was 'me' and now at bedtime I'm really fond of RG and a eurosceptic, anti gay marriage tory MP.

It's the end of days I tell you.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 15/03/2018 23:37

Of course he's not disablist. Both The Office and Extras are full of scenes that mock disablist behaviour. Both also feature disabled characters played by disabled people. Gervaise is one of the few comedians who really gets it I think.

dinosaurkisses · 15/03/2018 23:49

I really respect Gervais for his animal rights work and his anti-religion, pro-science stances.

Has he got any back lash off this? I haven’t seen much on twitter- unless I’ve missed it. I’d be shocked if he did to be honest, TRAs might have no hesitation in launching on (female...) TERFs on SM, but Gervais is well known for taking no prisoners with his debating style.

TheCraicDealer · 15/03/2018 23:56

I saw this show last year with DH (massive fan) and the Bruce Jenner stuff went down amazingly with the crowd. Very well observed and I was surprised it didn't get more attention during the tour. This was still when the media were all, "oh Caitlin, so brave, wah wah wah", so it was evern more cutting at the time. Maybe that just shows how much this cultish trans thing has ramped up over the last 12-18 months.

He's obviously a very logical, evidence-based person- as the whole trans concept is completely illogical it stands to reason he'd see it as excellent material.

Tartyflette · 16/03/2018 00:07

Graham Lineham (Father Ted writer and very funny man with a big presence on Twitter) gets it too and has publicly supported Posey Parker who is being investigated by West Yorks police following complaints by TRAs about her tweets.

LabourLostMe · 16/03/2018 00:25

I'm disappointed that RG or no other large following (blue star) person has shared the petition. Even those who are very 'on side'.

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 16/03/2018 06:27

Of course he's not disablist. Both The Office and Extras are full of scenes that mock disablist behaviour. Both also feature disabled characters played by disabled people

Remember Derek?
That entire show?
