I just saw this. What are Labour playing at? They’ll take anyone, any racist, any misogynist, and as long as they’re a TIM, women have to STFU and embrace them. It’s beyond belief.

Why can’t the LGBT advisor be a straight person? Based on the fact that their Women’s Officer doesn’t have any experience of actually being a woman. #doublestandards

Patodp · 27/02/2018 17:54

Are there so few decent TIMs out there they have to scrape the barrel to this extent??

hipsterfun · 27/02/2018 17:56

Oh, adviser to Labour's women and equality minister Dawn ‘we need to be mindful‘ Butler.

Well, Butler isn’t the sharpest tool in the box so I’m not surprised.

What is Bergdorf’s qualification/expertise?

TerfsUp · 27/02/2018 17:58

What is Bergdorf’s qualification/expertise?

Being male?

hipsterfun · 27/02/2018 18:05

For context, see with Melanie Phillips (apologies for the UKIP-y channel the video is on - it’s no longer available on the BBC website or I’d have linked there).

Butler’s apparent lack of a grasp of the matter at hand, and her substitution of mindfulness for analysis is worrying for somebody at that level of politics.

SunsetBeetch · 27/02/2018 18:32

Look at what she's tweeted about the suffragets!

twitter.com/MunroeBergdorf/status/965391527014027264?ref_src=twcamp%5Ecopy%7Ctwsrc%5Eandroid%7Ctwgr%5Ecopy%7Ctwcon%5E7090%7Ctwterm%5E1

FYI - The Suffragettes were white supremacists who were fighting for WHITE womens rights - they specifically left black women out of the movement. It is not 100 years since women got the vote it's 100 years since WHITE women got the vote. Black women couldnt vote until MUCH later

Lottapianos · 27/02/2018 18:36

Hipsterfun, I watched that clip and was GUTTED to be on the same side as Melanie Phillips! I don't know if Dawn is not very bright, or just keeping it all super bland and wooly so as not to offend anyone. Except for us 'cis' women of course Hmm

HairyBallTheorem · 27/02/2018 18:40

Isn't that straightforwardly factually incorrect if we're talking about UK politics? Yes, some of the suffragettes were racist and classist. As far as I know though, there has never been any sort of colour bar on voting in UK elections. There's something scarily Orwellian about this level of distortion of history.

Thoth · 27/02/2018 18:41

What about having someone that is L, G or B?

Thoth · 27/02/2018 18:42

Or indeed knows the difference between the UK and the US?

Mingmoo · 27/02/2018 18:48

This is one of the stupidest articles I've ever read in Grazia, which is saying something.

graziadaily.co.uk/life/opinion/munroe-bergdorf-women-getting-feminism-wrong/

'If we’re going to have conversations about rape and sexual assault, we also need to talk about sex workers’ rights. We need to talk about the fact that the average life expectancy of a transgender woman of colour is just 35, largely because they’re statistically more likely to end up in sex work to survive.

As a trans woman, I find it so distressing to see the media host conversations about abuse, yet consistently fail to focus on such issues. In doing so they’re perpetuating the idea that safety and dignity is only for some women. I long to see more cisgender women in positions of influence standing up for trans women, making people aware of issues that may not affect all of us, but that we should all care about deeply.'

As long as those issues aren't about reproduction or female biology, apparently. Hmm There are really very few trans people in the UK and a lot of women, but trans sex workers should be mentioned in ANY discussion of abuse? And not mentioning them is denying them the right to dignity and safety?

The thing that really pisses me off about her is that she is thick as mince, and yet she's been given access to important political influence largely because she ticks all the boxes for Jezza to look progressive and in touch with What Young People Want. Could we just have some evidence of critical thinking or even picking qualified trans people instead of a very dense model? Or are the photo shoots more important than the work?

hipsterfun · 27/02/2018 18:49

There’s no need to hide your intellectual light under a bushel on the Daily Politics, surely? And it’s not a great idea if you want to be taken seriously.

I note that towards the end she didn’t seem to be clear that transgender isn’t a sexuality.

hipsterfun · 27/02/2018 18:52

Apols, slow typing. That was to Lotta, talking about Butler.

nauticant · 27/02/2018 18:57

There's something scarily Orwellian about this level of distortion of history.

If you have a look at the replies to that no-votes-for-black-women tweet it is astonishing how many people lap it straight up as fact. It just slots right into their world view. Once implanted, even so readily, I dread to think how difficult it will be to correct.

What made people decide to stop thinking for themselves? I'll say what I always say, it's social media and the ease of creating echo chambers filled only with people wanting to validate commonly believed fake facts.

shehimthey · 27/02/2018 19:03

I have been really resistant to ditching my vote for Labour but I can't take any more of this. I really, really can't. If someone is working behind the scenes to ensure Labour NEVER get elected again they are doing a bloody fantastic job.

LassWiADelicateAir · 27/02/2018 19:10

Butler’s apparent lack of a grasp of the matter at hand, and her substitution of mindfulness for analysis is worrying for somebody at that level of politics

The topic was actually irrelevant. Butler was so poorly briefed and incapable of arguing coherently it was embarrassing that she is a shadow minister for anything.

As for Bergdorf- she comes across as a very unpleasant person.

shehimthey · 27/02/2018 19:35

The Facial Feminisation Surgery they had 3 weeks ago has rendered them unrecognisable. That must involve shaving away so much bone along the jawline. It must require such a level of self-obsession and narcissism to go through that pain (and money!) It makes being a woman seem all about surface and dressing.

YesItsADebate · 27/02/2018 19:45

On good authority, Dawn Butler is indeed as thick as two short planks.

There is no excuse for this utter travesty. Corbyn is right in the photo of the board.

Surfandterf · 27/02/2018 21:27

Being a woman to him is just about the looks though, fake tits and some make up is all that it takes for a narcissistic AGP . I'm so disappointed in labour though, I was highly unlikely to vote for them since their scandalous stance on self ID but day after day they seem to be going past no return. Who is behind the scenes doing the vetting? is there any vetting involved? Seriously, what the fuck! the right wing press will have a field day and who can blame them when they've made it so easy.

Helen Grant MP (Con) has written to Dawn Butler expressing her concerns about this appointment:

"The kind of language Bergdorf has used has no place in public life and ought to be condemned by all those who are serious about promoting equality."

Does this photo work? Shows what an unpleasant character Munroe Bergdorf is.
