Please help advise and shape a Campaign for the Right to Choose Sex Segregation... Basil?

After discussing on other threads the problems of
-using the language,
-reacting to the advances and
-responding to the priorities and concerns of those who seek to abolish women's rights - in other words, allowing MRAs and TRAs set the terms of the debate, there is a risk we are not taking the opportunity to set out our own demands.

So I thought we could set one out.

I brought together some thought and discussion on MN to create a document, setting out a simple demand for the 'Right to Choose Sex Segregation' - a right that is clearly being taking away from us by letting people opt into the services and facilities designated for the opposite sex. Many thanks to everyone who has responded with suggestions/corrections so far.

This doesn't cover the worrying transing of kids deliberately, in order to keep a clear focus of its aims.

It also avoids contentious terms such as 'gender' or 'transgender' and avoids heady intellectual language to keep it as inclusive as possible.

My current thoughts are to

  • Create an attractive, printable PDF to raise awareness to distribute during actions.
  • Use it as a basis for a widely circulated petition
  • Target businesses for twitter/letter writing campaigns, boycotts

However, I don't want to go down the road of Caroline Craido-Perez or Laura Bates and be the face of anything. Is Basil still here? How did it work staying anonymous with 'We Believe You'?

I'd love to have any thoughts, feedback, next steps or suggestions to make this an empowering resource for people who want the option for sex-segregation/ same-sex spaces.

Big thanks in advance.

Guardian thank you, that's brilliant. Love the fact sheet.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 24/02/2018 12:19

Just placemarking so I can come back and read this x

GuardianLions · 24/02/2018 12:24

Thanks Judge!
I have just made your tweak here

It would be great if we could get MNHQ to endorse....

I have been thinking as a bio on the website, it would be nice to talk about who 'we' are is a groups of people from all different backgrounds, political persuasions, etc who met on mumsnet and sing the praises of MN for this precious free speech.

I agree, and I think people realising the full implications for the first time will google and realise many of these men being pandered to and lamented about are sexually and otherwise violent anyway.

GuardianLions · 24/02/2018 18:06

here it is as a downloadable document

My feeling is that we should be proud mumsnetters about it... I've contacted a couple of people so we'll see if they get back.

Any launch ideas?

Excellent Guardian (and everyone) ! Well done.

Suggest sending this to various news outlets but will need someone to front it?

ChattyLion · 24/02/2018 21:32

Great job Guardian and thank you again.

Today on on a day out via public transport with my female DC (all completely covered up in cold weather gear as it happens) we were sexually harassed once in a public space and once on public transport (separate men/events). We also had to use (women’s) public toilets four times today for various different reasons while we were out.

I just can’t bear the idea that there is a future in front of my DC where harassment or sexual abuse, also (especially?) will happen to them in private, more enclosed spaces like public toilets and shop changing rooms too, taking place at times specifically because they will be more vulnerable or be undressing or whatever. And to me, and every other woman.

And there will be fuck all that can be done to keep such arseholes out, because any arsehole will be able to legally self ID into womens’ spaces. When these are already our mundane everyday experiences of harassment as women and girls in broad daylight in busy public places.... how the fuck is self identification even up for discussion?!

GuardianLions · 24/02/2018 21:34

I hear you! We need to defend our right to have boundaries!

Awesome job, thank you.
Is it ok if I change the cover page to make it more print friendly?
Is it ok to share the leaflet and website now?

CaptainWarbeck · 24/02/2018 23:57

This is great. I would also support buying a load of stickers and putting them up in every public toilet I can.

CaptainWarbeck · 25/02/2018 00:08

If you put it on fair play for women you would have a web address to link to. If you printed up stickers you could sell on eBay to cover costs- I would buy a job lot and keep them in my handbag for slapping up when out and about!
If you did stickers you would need a good ‘hook’ to get people to notice. Something like: would you be comfortable with a man in the next cubicle? If the answer is no... blah blah blah

This. This x1000. So we need:

  • to agree on a web address or find someone to host it on a section of theirs
  • to set up said web address if we go for that, would need someone with IT/design skills
  • to design stickers with SEX MATTERS and/or a question hook, along with a QR code (easily created) which takes you to the website
  • to set up an eBay seller account with anonymous email and no information available that could be easily doxxed
  • to set up a PayPal/bank account for money made from sticker sales to sit in while we work out what to use it for (other than reimbursing cost of stickers)
  • to manage eBay sticker seller account and post out sales to MNers across the country

So that's quite a list and requires various skills. At the moment I think just raising awareness of the issue is an important thing, which stickers would do.

GuardianLions · 25/02/2018 09:54

Hi Upstart here is a version with a more print-friendly front page

Captain - well everyone really - I reckon we should have an actual campaign launch with press (but I can't see the harm in distributing the doc in the interim to gather support, get the idea out there - or does someone think I am being daft about it?)..

And I love the stickering idea and everything else you suggest.

I wonder if it is possible to do it without having a person fronting it...

Hi GuardianLions et al

I have been thinking hard about this issue and it seems to me we can use Guardians work to spearhead a lobbying campaign of our local MPs and women’s institutes etc.

Can we coordinate to encourage each other to contact our MPs over the next month and set up meetings.

If we do this in the same time frame then when all these MPs meet up in Parliament they will all have had a member of their constituency speak to them and will have our concerns in their thoughts
