Just checking my emails.1.19 pm, email from 'Nate' at the GofundMe trust and safety team requesting a copy of my government issued photo ID ,evidence of my connection to the campaign such as links to social media.
Failure to respond within 48hrs will result in the refund of my donation.
Checked GofundMe t @ c's ,states they will never request personal details.
Very worrying

Hemlock
Having offered the donors the opportunity to donate in someone else's name, how do they expect that verification process to work?

"Please send us your Aunty Carol's ID documents"?

ATeardropExplodes · 19/01/2018 20:13

However, asking for ID is really normal for online businesses. So I'd hold off on panicking until that's confirmed.

I've have never ever been asked for ID for any online purchases. Why would they? They have the money, the deal is done. This is not usual behaviour.

AngryAttackKittens · 19/01/2018 20:13

I'm picturing myself donating to a campaign with a socialist slant in the name of Karl Marx and them asking for ID to prove that I'm a famous dead guy.

OlennasWimple · 19/01/2018 20:13

Asking for verification of Id is not the same, though, as asking for details on an individual's connection to a campaign. Which is frankly none of their business and complaetly irrelevant to whether an individual should be allowed to donate their own money

Even the wording on the email is phishy. Nope!

ATeardropExplodes · 19/01/2018 20:15

Me too Angry/Karl!

The irony that they can scream 'YOU DEADNAMED ME' for calling themselves ladies names but our donations are rejected for daring to change our names.

Utter cunts.

OlennasWimple · 19/01/2018 20:19

Isn't asking for government issued photo ID a bit triggering for individuals unable to attain this in their preferred gender presentation....?

ATeardropExplodes · 19/01/2018 20:23

I feel very much like Lyra Potter in my personal presentation and have lived like Lyra Potter for at least 3 days, so what the fuck has to got to do with them whose name I donate in?

AngryAttackKittens · 19/01/2018 20:24

As I am unable to grow a lush Karl-style beard I find requests that I prove that I identify as him very upsetting.

BelligerentGardenPixies · 19/01/2018 20:25

I've emailed them again and asked in what legal sense they have the right to ask for photo ID. I've also told them I'm asking zendesk what their legal take is on requesting this info.

Glitterypinksoap · 19/01/2018 20:28

"We're reaching out...."

Yes, highly fishy. Watching The Book Thief on tv. The similarities are striking and chilling.

HangingRoundInABofAlorsStance · 19/01/2018 20:29

What on earth? Since when do fundraisers give a fuck who's donating or why? Certainly Just Giving did not seem to give one shiny shit whether David himself was donating to legitimise his ''charity'' Not sure they refunded either. Why is gofundme any different and what is the motive?

EamonnWright · 19/01/2018 20:30

They will have received multiple fraud reports and don't know how to react maybe.

BarrackerBarmer · 19/01/2018 20:32

Can you add in, for good measure, that asking for photo ID is potentially EXTREMELY TRANSPHOBIC AND DANGEROUS as it might potentially 'out' the most oppressed minority in the world which is going to be the same thing as literal violence.

And just let them chew on that for a while.

Maybe just coincidence but I had a couple of dodgy emails, something about welcome to bitcoin, the day after i donated (in my real name) I have never had any iffy ones before on that email account. I deleted straight away.

BeyondWW · 19/01/2018 20:34

Well, one...
that we were unable to confirm the credentials that you entered for your recent donation - that has a lot of that's in it!

Two...
In the Uk, we don't get "government issued photo id" as standard. Plenty of people don't have passports or DLs.

Three, the social media thing is just weird.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 19/01/2018 20:37

Wow. I've had no request for Id, I donated anonymously under my own name which matched my card and isn't a common name (although there are two others who's email I often receive) - and I've just had both my donations refunded

That's really bizarre - theres obviously something odd going on.

PocketCoffeeEspresso · 19/01/2018 20:37

CANCEL THAT - I will get it deleted - I'm incompetent and Mis-read my txts from my credit card which were for some reason delayed!

AngryAttackKittens · 19/01/2018 20:38

"Government issued photo ID" is an American phrase, though you'd be asked for it when opening a bank account and not when donating to an online fundraiser. So, US based phishing scheme/TRA.
