And do they define what they mean by "men" and "women" ? - cos as we all know that's a bit tricky nowadays

PencilsInSpace · 26/12/2017 18:26

I know! I thought the whole point of an impact assessment was to think about possible unintended consequences.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 26/12/2017 18:27

We'll exactly, how are they for eg "going to tackle the pay gap between men and women" when they are going to change the definition of women to include men...

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 26/12/2017 18:35

The fact Justine Greening has delayed the Westminster consultation will encourage Holyrood to fast track the Scottish one to show how impeccably liberal and inclusive Holyrood and Scotland is.

IrkThePurist · 26/12/2017 20:12

Saying the non transitioning partner needs to request a divorce ignores the reality of coercion and consent. If you marry someone you dont consent to marry a same sex partner any more than you consent to being raped. The marriage should be dissolved.

That might go some way to stopping AGP's using women and children as a human shield in the first place.

Sadly, I fear you may be right. I'm still going to fight it though, take time to fill out the consultation properly, and go and talk to my MSP face to face.

Divorce is dissolution. I think you are thinking of annulment where the marriage is declared null and void.

Annulment is an English term but a spouse in Scotland can apply to have a marriage declared void which treats the marriage as if it never existed. For example although everything looked fine one party was not fully mentally aware to give consent. Presumably if the marriage is declared void things such as spousal claims to pension funds don't apply.

The Catholic church will give religious anulments but that is only for its own purposes of bending the rules to allow divorcees to receive communion and re- marry.

RedToothBrush · 01/01/2018 00:09

Rumour tonight that Greening is about to get the chop.

QuentinSummers · 01/01/2018 09:08

Noooo why?

RedToothBrush · 01/01/2018 12:01

Reshuffle. Something about her being regarded as too friendly with the trade unions...

TunaSushi · 01/01/2018 14:24

My guess is she isn't right wing enough, not hard enough on the unions and she's giving them grief over GRA, spending DfE money on Mermaids etc.

TheXXFactor · 01/01/2018 16:45

In fairness, on the GRA Greening seems to have inherited the mess created by Maria Miller. I thought it was encouraging that she (JG) didn't deny the Sunday Times story that she was having doubts about self ID. If she goes, we may get someone worse.

guardianfree · 01/01/2018 20:35

I do wonder to what extent women MPs are becoming aware of the levels of opposition to self ID? I do hope that it's getting through to them - but it will be very hard for Labour women to shift their positions on this without getting a twitter storm of 'transphobic bigots' and misogyny poured all over them (although I suppose they are used to that).

RedToothBrush · 06/01/2018 22:15

Rumors again tonight that Greening is going.

Maria Miller tipped to get her old job back as Women and Equalities minister

Mner · 07/01/2018 17:09

Only just seen this thread but I have now responded to the consultation in Scotland (although I am in England) and I've written to my MP. It's a bit of a worry re JG.

Terrylene · 08/01/2018 08:26

Does anyone know why MM lost womens&equality in the first place?

Datun · 08/01/2018 08:43

Jesus Red. Would it be too much to hope for that she has learnt anything? She hadn't earlier in the year when she said an interview was a stitch up for merely asking questions.

RedToothBrush · 08/01/2018 09:49

Terrylene she got caught with her fingers taking too much from the Commons petty cash tin back in the days when that meant you were forced to resign for wrong doing.

Its by no means certain, but that's the only rumour for the position so far.

Terrylene · 08/01/2018 15:40

Maria Caulfield Vice chair for Women ???? Confused What is it?

Terrylene · 08/01/2018 15:43

Or is she the Vice chair of the Conservative party and minister for women and equalities?

Terrylene · 08/01/2018 15:46

Seems to be a conservative party thing - they appear to have a Vice Chair for everything going. Hmm

RedToothBrush · 08/01/2018 16:31

Maria Caulfield CCHQ Vice chair for Women.

She's supposed to be responsible for selling the Tories to Women, and representing women to the party.

Her appointment has provoke this response:

bpas‏ @bpas1968
We are incredibly disappointed to hear that Maria Caulfield MP, who supports the criminalisation of women who end their own pregnancies, is the new CCHQ Vice Chair for Women.
Maria Caulfield lead the parliamentary opposition to @DianaJohnsonMP's bill to protect women and decriminalise abortion up to 24 weeks, and defended the current law which threatens any woman who ends her own pregnancy without the approval of 2 doctors with life imprisonment.
This is not an abstract issue. Women in across the UK have faced prosecution and prison sentences for ending pregnancies using abortion medication bought online.
These are often women in the most desperate of circumstances. One study found 1 in 5 who tried to use online abortion medication were in a violent or controlling relationship. Should these women face criminal prosecution? According to the new CCHQ Vice-Chair for women, yes.
Caulfield's views are out of step with members of the public & her own parliamentary party. Our polling found majority of Con MPs agree that a woman should be able to have an abortion if she does not want to continue with a pregnancy, a more liberal framework than our current law
Abortion is not a side issue. One in three women will have an abortion in their lifetime. One in three. They deserve parliamentarians who take their wellbeing seriously, not those who would seek to impose their minority view on their access to healthcare.
Maria Caulfield MP, the new Conservative Vice Chair for Women, seeks to be a "voice for the unborn child."
Our full comment on the shocking decision to appoint Maria Caulfield as Conservative Vice Chair for Women is here:

Nineteenagain · 08/01/2018 16:36

Well thats terrible. Womens rights really are going backwards.

IsabellaDMC · 08/01/2018 17:08

In addition to voting against decriminalisation of abortion, Maria Caulfield has also voted

  • against calling on the Government to ensure women and protected groups are not disproportionally impacted by tax and benefit changes
  • against publication of a gender equality strategy to improve the position of women

So clearly someone our PM should be listening to on women's rights Hmm

Terrylene · 08/01/2018 17:18

Greening arrived at no 10, so not sacked. May be moved though. Waiting.
