everydayfeminism.com/2017/02/trans-women-not-biologically-male/

Just going to post this here and then go and do some deep breathing to try and control my frustration.

No, I get what JAPAB is saying for once.

Riley thinks if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's a duck.

Riley is therefore ignoring most of the other characteristics of a duck (such as egg-laying ability and genetics...) and assuming that a duck-like costume is sufficient.

Datun · 23/12/2017 00:18

The problem with Riley’s ‘if it looks like a duck’ scenario is that 99.9% of the ducks he is talking about, including himself, look and behave exactly like drakes.

Wtf have I just watched. Imo live and let live, if a person wants to trans themselves, fine. But it deeply offends me to be told sex doesn't exist. Think he needs to remember that yes a trans person can initiate a woman and live as one, but without true biological men and women life would seize to exist.

Babybauble · 23/12/2017 00:29

Imitate*

Maryz · 23/12/2017 00:52

I watched that a couple of times and it reminds me of conversations I have had in the past with my next door neighbour, a Baptist minister.

I mean, I know he believes what he says. I know he thinks God talks to him, I know he thinks he has to convince me to save me, and I'm much to polite to argue. I also like him, he's nice. But he is just very wrong.

It's difficult. He's old, he's set in his ways, polite disagreement or diversion doesn't work, I'm not willing to say "ffs, wake up, God didn't send you here, some poor parish in the US is bleeding themselves dry to divert funds from proper charities so you can live a lovely life in Ireland trying to convert people like me. But really, if you are Christian, if you want to help people, give back that money and spend it on poor people back where you come from".

So I now feel guilty that I'm avoiding him, because I can't say it, but I can't agree either. I'm polite. He's an idiot.

Maryz · 23/12/2017 00:59

Actually, it reminds me of a couple of videos he's directed me to about evolution.

If you suspend all reality, and forget about scientific fact, then it makes sense.

AsMenDclaredWomenTheirInferior · 23/12/2017 06:06

Am I going to suspend my disbelief for Riley?
Cos not to offends Riley?
No!

GuardianLions · 23/12/2017 10:03

I found that uncomfortable to watch. Using the example of women who have ovarian cancer was painful for me because of a bereavement in my life.

Riley could put his mind to much better use if he wasn't arguing so hard that the word is flat. He is good at constructing arguments that sound plausible even though they are bollocks.

I feel bad for him in a way because you can tell in his eyes and voice there's a lot of pain he doesn't want to face up to - he is trying to convince himself just as hard as he is trying to convince us.

You all must be missing the disclaimer She’s a polyamorous, atheist, gender non-binary trans woman with a passion for fiction writing, feminism, and technology. She got her BA from Whittier College in 2015 doing a self-designed major called Writing Worlds, a mixture of creative writing and anthropology, focused on realistic fictional world building .

So much twattery in so few words! But it shows that RileyDear is expert in getting the world to jump to meet her requirements!

Elendon · 23/12/2017 14:49

So presumably same sex marriage is no longer politically correct?

Two heterosexual males marry. Yes. They are heterosexual and males. Same sex relationship.

Tinycitrus · 23/12/2017 15:04

I look at things like this and...

Do you know that heart attack symptoms can be experienced differently according to Biology.

There are a host of medical conditions that present differently according to whether you are a man or a woman.

It doesnt matter whether you have had a surgeon construct a vagina for you or you strap down your breasts.

I am absolutely in the camp that supports trans women and men to present themselves in any way they wish - you only get one life so if it helps to be another gender then so be it. I respect these people simply because they are people.

But thinking biology can be changed? That’s magical thinking.

Thehairthebod · 23/12/2017 15:32

I have watched a few of Riley's videos, and they really are just total made up bollocks, he just pulls statements out of his arse and presents them as fact. Thankfully most comments underneath appear to agree with me on that one.

When I watch Riley there is nothing about them that is even vaguely 'female' or even 'feminine'. They look like a man, they sound like a man, and their awful mansplaining is exactly like a man. I just don't get what it is that makes them a woman.

I really do try to he understanding, and I haven't called Riley 'he' but neither can I bring myself to say 'she' either. But these people are just arguing that black is white and we are just all supposed to nod along in the name of 'being kind'?

DistaffSide · 23/12/2017 16:24

realistic fictional world building .

That explains a lot. I assume Whiney is working on his PhD now and this is all an experiment for him.

DistaffSide · 23/12/2017 16:25

Riley is working.....autocorrect

Elendon · 23/12/2017 17:26

My question to this young person Riley is

'How did you come to be made and born?'

rosy71 · 23/12/2017 17:31

She points out most are changeable but acknowledges that chromosomes are unchageable.

S/he talks about everything except chromosomes being changeable by having surgery or taking hormones. They are not naturally changeable but determined by chromosomes. Therefore they are not really changeable.

I also don't think doctors (or more commonly midwives, surely) assign gender at birth. How weird. They tell you whether the baby is male or female.

TheDetectorist · 23/12/2017 18:35

Why have they edited out all the natural pauses between sentences in that video? Is it so that there’s no time to think ‘this is clearly bullshit’? Regardless of the insane content it’s so hard to listen to.

Also, if I was wondering about who goes in which prison/hospital ward/school dormitory etc. I think having people in two boxes of penis vs. vagina would be quite a good idea thanks Riley.

BatShite · 23/12/2017 18:59

She got her BA from Whittier College in 2015 doing a self-designed major called Writing Worlds

I didn't realise you could self-design your major? Whats the point in doing one if its entirely your own chosing (and I assume, marking and such also?) so it would be useless to anyone else bar you?

Elendon · 23/12/2017 19:40

Why was there a midwife at your birth Riley? Who were they helping?

MrsFionaCharming · 23/12/2017 22:30

So you can identify out of biology, especially parts you can’t see like chromosomes?

So say I needed a liver transplant, could I just identify as healthy and no longer need one? After all, I ant see my liver.

loopsdefruit · 24/12/2017 00:48

Bat American Colleges work fairly differently, I assume it was a liberal arts program and the major was made up of selected modules from the course catalogue. Anyone can select any combination of modules (courses) for a major, or select a preset major that will have certain course requirements.

I'm not a huge fan of this video, it's not very well put across. I do think that what makes you a woman/man/both/neither is just your gender identity.

I agree that we have different organs that require different care and can have different health needs/medical issues, but I don't think that those differences need to have 'man' or 'woman' attached, because man and woman have expectations and stereotypes associated with them.

Make man and woman social, and treat everyone on an individual basis depending on their organs. So forms would be like "Gender: options" "Do you require breast/cervical screening?: Y/N" "Do you require prostate checks?" etc...

No assumptions based on the gender question (or sex question come to that) and people still get the medical care they need, also removing the 'man/woman' thing might help lessen dysphoria for people who experience it while meeting their medical needs.

Maryz · 24/12/2017 01:10

You see, I don't think man/woman should be to do with "gender identity" - it should be defined by whether you need cervical screening/prostate checks, ie whether you are biologically male or female.

After all, that's what the definition of man/woman is.

If you want to go with "gender" - a word I reject as being complete bollocks - then you need to define it. As someone who never wears dresses/makeup/heels/nail varnish, likes maths and is good at mapreading, would much prefer not to have periods or breasts, what gender am I?

Ekphrasis · 24/12/2017 06:53

Loop under that thinking you'd take away the word gender altogether on a form. And that kind of world would be fine and dandy except that far far too much stereotyping is linked to your sex or if you want one, your gender, especially oppression and violence. In a way I agree that it would help to reframe clothing in stores as clothes and non gender them in the same way - 'do you want trousers? This is the trouser section.' As I think a few places are (JL?) Especially for kids.

But also under that methodology you'd keep the option for separate sex toilets as your organ structure requires a vagina or penis toilet. (That would make interesting logo signs) Which TRAs aren't keen on. And the only way you could deal with that to suit everyone is individual lockers - which I was told they leave open at the bottom in mixed sex swimming pools to help tackle any issues of having sex in them. Which led to my colleague being effectively sexually assaulted (she was very shaken) as a man watched her change after her swim (he was arrested and it went to court).

SpartonDregs · 24/12/2017 07:14

I do think that what makes you a woman/man/both/neither is just your gender identity.

Just what is in your head, not what is actually your body? Good grief.
