Mhairi Black

I’m wondering if anyone is in Mhairi Black’s constituency. She would potentially be a great person to get on board with raising awareness of the problems of self id, and does seem to be on the side of women thinking of her work to date.
I think if we could get a strong voice likes her’s to speak out it could really make a difference. She would be a great person to try to meet with but I’m not in her constituency (nowhere near it) or I would do it myself
Any takers??

Takers for what?surely you can write to mhairi or dm her on Twitter
Are you hoping she’ll support a particular cause or attend an event?

furcoatnaeknickers · 20/12/2017 19:12

As I said for a constituent to contact her regarding self id/ changes to GRA
She has no duty of care to respond otherwise. I’ve contacted and met with my MSP so far but I’m not in that part of Scotland

I very much doubt she’d step away from the SNP party line on this unfortunately- they have a very tight whip.

WooWooWitchetyWoo · 20/12/2017 21:03

I'd be very surprised if she would put her head above the parapet. Very surprised indeed.

Gacapa · 20/12/2017 21:34

I'd be astonished if she was on board to be honest. SNP abandoned women to this agenda and nobody defies the whip.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 20/12/2017 23:25

It's worth a try. I will be speaking to my (SNP) MSP after Xmas. We really can't give up on this.

furcoatnaeknickers · 20/12/2017 23:41

If we don’t bother contacting anyone in the SNP then there will be no opposition to GRA in Scotland where SNP have majority.
I know Mhairi Black is an MP but she is potentially influential to other SNP MPs and MSPs
If I lived in her constituency I’d go and see her. My SNP MSP didn’t say if there would be a free vote or not, but said it would depend on other factors. If there’s lots of information out there and people are starting to see the problems then there’s a better chance of a free vote. Or we can just not bother

I wrote to her but heard nothing. She is not my MP. I didn't hear from my MP either. It was before the last election and that MP has been kicked out but I don't hold much hope for the new one

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 21/12/2017 00:12

Mhairi Black will do exactly what her party tells her to.

Elendon · 21/12/2017 00:57

How can you possibly know that? Such an arrogant statement.

dinosaursandtea · 21/12/2017 00:59

Pretty sure she’s trans positive from what I know of her.

Elendon · 21/12/2017 01:07

What does trans positive mean?

I'm all for trans rights me. However, I don't believe they should impinge on the rights of others. I've lived through apartheid. There is room to move over on the men's benches. Women have a small enough bench as it is.

Gacapa · 21/12/2017 07:58

Elendon - because that's what SNP MPs and MSPs do.

She'd actually have to defy the whip and party. We've no indication that she even cares at all, never mind enough to basically destroy her own political career to say so.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 21/12/2017 08:38

How can you possibly know that? Such an arrogant statement

Do you know anything about Scottish politics?

The SNP allows no dissent from the party line on any subect. They vote en masse on everything. Black voted Remain because she was told to and is on record saying she didn't want to.

LangCleg · 21/12/2017 09:14

The SNP is all on board the trans train. And yes, they are known for watertight party discipline.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/12/2017 09:15

We'll they're definitely not going to change their mind if no-one contacts them...

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 21/12/2017 09:46

Black is currently facing criticism because she has one of the worst voting and attendance records in Westminster.

She is not going to spend time and effort going against the party line on a matter the vast majority of her constituents will think is irrelevant.

pisacake · 21/12/2017 09:49

The SNP are aggressively pro-trans.

furcoatnaeknickers · 21/12/2017 09:51

If she spoke about it, people would listen. Including her constituents.
If we don’t bother contacting SNP then it’s all over in Scotland as we know greens will vote with them.
If there is a groundswell of public opinion against this there is a chance to stop this. But it’s going to take lots of people meeting with MSPs and more in the media too.
Does anyone know who’s on the equalities committees in Holyrood?

furcoatnaeknickers · 21/12/2017 09:52

Lots of people on here are clearly very anti SNP but don’t let it cloud your thinking completely to the point of giving up

OP posts:
pisacake · 21/12/2017 10:03

it's nothing to do with being anti-SNP, it's a fact that the SNP are all over the trans agenda. Look it up on Hansard.

nauticant · 21/12/2017 10:12

The comments above are pretty straightforward. The SNP have bought into the trans ideology. Black will follow this because of the way the SNP work. It's likely that Black will have bought into the ideology too.

There's nothing to stop anyone from contacting Black with some gender critical thoughts but if they do, they must keep in mind the surrounding context to avoid triggering an immediate "what is this transphobic rubbish?" dismissal.

Beltane18 · 21/12/2017 12:01

LAss "Black is currently facing criticism because she has one of the worst voting and attendance records in Westminster. "

oh that's interesting. She nearly didn't stand again because of how she much she hates Westminster. I wonder if she will resign or something.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 21/12/2017 12:52

She says her non- attendance is due to illness but she is open about how much she dislikes Westminster.

She had a reduced majority in 2017. I doubt this is an issue which is greatly vexing the voters in Paisley and Renfrewshire South, particularly if she is not pulling her weight on other issues.

As for "anti SNP" I loathe the SNP but it is well known how tight the SNP whip is. They vote as a block in Westminster and the same at Holyrood.

Elendon · 21/12/2017 13:01

Black voted Remain because she was told to and is on record saying she didn't want to.

I don't understand this. A vote in the polling booth is private. Or was this in the Houses of Parliament? Or Holyrood? Or both?

All parties have three line whips and in the Houses of Parliament the whip is not allowed/withdrawn when it comes to issues like abortion and euthanasia. SNP would not be allowed to use the whip in those occasions.
