Some of you may not have seen this yet but interesting piece in today's Times about the erm surprising demands of the Action for Trans Health group.

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/action-for-trans-health-activists-want-free-sex-change-hormones-for-children-dhvv5c52v?shareToken=a25843963cfe5dedee932c893d360355

The thing is that groups like ATH are, to all intents and purposes, shooting themselves in the foot. If they honestly believe that Tory ministers are demedicalising transing out of the goodness of their hearts, then they are even more stupid than I gave them credit for.

Presently, it is possible to get all the various hormones, blockers, surgery (on the rare occasions they have any) etc etc on the NHS, free at the point of use. Once it's demedicalised as they want it to be, do they really honestly believe that will continue?

No, what will happen is that the NHS will be able to wash it's hands of a growing drain on it's resources, which will be catastrophic for the small number of people with body dysmorphia, a serious mental health issue where the sufferer needs these things to be able to function.

So, they will be paying for their pills, paying for their therapy, and they still won't get Ian Huntley out of jail and they will make people who desperately need treatments suffer needlessly.

Not only do the amendments to the GRA put actual trans women in greater danger, but these clowns are also trying to take their healthcare away.

SparklyUnicornTractors · 18/12/2017 13:48

I particularly like the demand for access to medical training.

As far as I'm aware, there are no barriers whatsoever to anyone wanting medical training, if they have the required qualifications to apply for the course.

I wonder if this actually means 'regardless of education and qualifications, not having to compete with other applicants for places, and free of all expense'.

Imherefornow · 18/12/2017 14:06

I agree with xenophile. If TA's think that the Tory's are actually supporting trans people, then they are seriously stupid.

If Torys gave a shit about addressing 'humiliating and invasive' bureaucracy then people with disabilities would be faring much better in society.

This is all about removing free health care and lining the pockets of private health care providers

Terrylene · 18/12/2017 14:09

Other lobby groups also provide diversity education and materials, such as stonewall, gires (with its penguin parties for coming out), mermaids and probably others. Their focus is to bring about change, so they are not a source of good independent unbiased advice.

They may not, at first, appear as batshit* as ATH but the government is still using them to provide information and resources that they are not and pointing the public in their direction.

(The penguins and the mermaids sweetie stall definitely are)

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 18/12/2017 14:18

I saw a tweet saying that Mermaids were working with Childline Shock

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 18/12/2017 14:19

Tweet was from the Royal Society of Medicine, so presumable legit.

Terry

The comparison with Kids Company (in that second tweet thread) is quite apt I feel

Terrylene · 18/12/2017 14:25

Very much so. I also read somewhere that the director draws a salary.

bluewoollyhat OMG Sad

Lancelottie · 18/12/2017 17:23

Blue - could you say, 'OK, I clearly need to read up on this. Could you link me to some good meta-studies on brain gender differences please?'

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 18/12/2017 17:27

It’s a group of over 4000 doctors

Well that's terrifying Shock

misskelly · 18/12/2017 17:33

I’ve been refused a breast reduction for what I thought were very good medical and psychological reasons. If this GRA nonsense comes to pass I’m of to see my GP and tell them I now believe I’m a man and demand my reduction.

furcoatnaeknickers · 18/12/2017 17:41

I guess it’s possible other people on the group don’t want to agree for fear of repercussions. Maybe they are similarly agog to be reading that?

IcedCocoa · 18/12/2017 18:00

This is a genuine question as I don’t understand endocrinology and brains.

But if it was a female brain, surely the pituitary gland in it would give signals to secrete oestrogen/progesterone; not testosterone. If it was a male brain, the pituitary gland would give signals to secrete testosterone and whatever other male hormones are needed.

Because if you have a female brain in a male body, why do you need puberty blockers? The female brain would do the job for you, wouldn’t it? It would secrete the right hormones, because it is a female brain.

Can you ask your medics to explain that, genuinely blue before you NC? Or can some medically trained person explain to me why my simple understanding of matters is wrong.

A female brain triggers a female puberty; a male brain triggers a male one. So if you had a female brain in a male body, you would get a female puberty surely?

bluewoollyhat · 18/12/2017 18:23

Argh really sorry sudden attack of paranoia, hence getting my post deleted. Don’t want to be struck off.
I know that’s frustrating for people who didn’t read it
I am name changing again after this but will say I did post some stuff which will hopefully give all the lurkers something to start thinking about. Sorry I’m off now Sad

IcedCocoa · 18/12/2017 18:29

No worries, sensible move.
Maybe someone else can answer my question though?

cafeaulaitpourvous · 18/12/2017 18:43

@bluewoollyhat ThanksGin

Betti935 · 18/12/2017 19:26

This story featured quite prominently in today's paper copy of the Express (on one of the first few pages) and there was also a comment/editorial piece saying that trans issues needed a proper 'grown up' debate not just the government listening to trans pressure groups.

BatShite · 18/12/2017 22:27

Blue..is there any chance you could PM me what the post was, or even just a summary? I am very interested in the topic of 'brain sex' and would be interested to read whatever it was. understand completely if not though. I am sure its really scary to be risking your job (how on earth has it came to this?!) Flowers

bluewoollyhat · 20/12/2017 19:49
