It's free to sign up for The Times 3 months subscription if you want to add your comments.

At last these issues are bring talked about in the mainstream press. It's important that women are heard.

And good that the Times interviewed two transgender women who both understood the problem with those socialised as men taking places for reserved for women.

busyboysmum · 25/11/2017 09:13

Yes. What lovely people they were. If TIM really were women they would understand and empathise with what women are saying.

How much better to replace men with transwomen on boards, in political parties etc Then we would get a genuine expansion of representation from the broadest range of men. Trans men would be welcome to stand as women’s officers as they will have a different perspective on what it means to be marginalised.

LangCleg · 25/11/2017 11:08

NO! They should not!

I am still hanging onto my Labour Party membership by a thread and yesterday, Dawn Butler sent round an email blast encouraging women to apply for the Jo Cox programme before the deadline. I replied to it asking how it could possibly redress sex-based inequities in politics when it has already given awards to males and when current Labour councillors were supporting applications from spiteful boys like Lily Madigan. I explained that my current consideration was about cancelling my Labour Party membership, not applying for this scheme.

Hopefully, other women will have replied similarly.

By the way, Kristina Harrison, quoted in this article, is a lovely person who totally gets it - from a leftist perspective, no less! - and well worth following on Twitter at @KJ_Harrison. It can't be easy for a trans person to take this position in the current climate.

SlowlyShrinking · 25/11/2017 11:12

No, they definitely should not be. They are Male. They obviously do not qualify. Cheats.

Backingvocals · 25/11/2017 11:15

Think a trans woman already got it? Sophie Cook? Maybe wrong on that.

I’ve resigned my membership and told them this is why. Fuckers.

W8what · 25/11/2017 11:17

No. I echo what everyone else said and the cartoon posted by busy encapsulates my fear. I mean sh*t like jenner being the woman of the year is bad enough (really couldn’t think of a single bloody woman doing something important or useful!? If i got an award everytime I put on a dress and did my hair - i would never actually win an award) but I really can envision a while bunch of high profile roles taken by people who are not biological women and somehow that makes everything ok?

MaryMaryQuiteLovely · 25/11/2017 11:30

No. And the should get positions designated for women either

Ereshkigal · 25/11/2017 12:20

That cartoon is great. Anyone know who the second from left is? I think I get who the other three are!

They should be eligible if they have a GRC. That's what the law says and I think it's reasonable. Otherwise, absolutely not.

Ereshkigal · 25/11/2017 12:25

Yes, then we can avoid all that pesky maternity leave and family friendly working policies.

Was it Luciana Berger who had just had a baby and was criticised for taking time out around the election?

Two TiMs have already done the Jo Cox women in leadership thing.

There will no doubt be more.

I wonder what the take up of TiFs is for leaderships roles within the party? And how those people are mentored.

I would support a mentoring program open to TiFs and TiMs so that TiFs, who will have experienced sex based discrimination within Labour and TiMs, who won't, both have a fair crack of the whip. I don't support TiMs accessing mentoring programs specifically for women.

Ereshkigal · 25/11/2017 12:29

Sorry I thought you said replace women with transwomen and were being sarcastic so my response is in that spirit.

Ereshkigal · 25/11/2017 12:31

No, neither do I, GRC or no. We need to get the EA exemptions to reflect women's needs more and be applied in these cases.

HumphreyCobblers · 25/11/2017 12:31

Two TIM have already done it? I didn't know this.

It really makes a mockery of the process. No, they should not be eligible. Transwomen's representation can be upped with special measures if necessary, but not at the expense of female representation ffs.

ElizaDontlittle · 25/11/2017 12:33

I dream of being eligible for the Jo Cox awards. But I am slogging away regardless to get the work done.
I'm a hospital doctor - and I campaign where I am able. Many women do more than I can.

LangCleg · 25/11/2017 12:37

I don't think a GRC should make trans identified males eligible for programs intended to reduce sex-based inequalities. They should be exceptions in the law, in the same way as refuges etc currently are.

I would be quite happy to support separate specific programs to help trans people. That way, trans identified females might actually get a crack at something.

Ereshkigal · 25/11/2017 12:40

YY. There should be an agreed representation of trans people and awards for them.

FlaviaAlbia · 25/11/2017 12:42

No. What can a 19yr old barely out of boyhood bring to a women's officers role? It's utterly ridiculous.

Viviennemary · 25/11/2017 12:45

Not keen on those awards for individuals. I'd rather it was given to an organisation. People need to make their voices heard louder if they think this is an important issue. Because it seems to be happening more and more as time goes on. Why does this seem only to be an issue in the Labour party.
