"Ja Du’s ‘transracial’ identity isn’t real—but being transgender definitely is"
I was honestly a bit confused at first - was this a right-wing website taking the piss, or a liberal website being 100% serious.
I had to check mediabiasfactcheck.com/daily-dot/. Apparently they are serious.
"But Ja Du’s case is a bit different from other viral “transracial” sensations like Rachel Dolezal and Martina Big, who both identify as cisgender women. Ja Du says he’s also transgender and wants to undergo gender transitioning.
In the local station’s original interview with Ja Du, the reporter identifies Ja Du as a “transsexual” and proceeds to mention his assigned gender at birth and deadname, all of which are seen as signs of disrespect to the trans community."
So it's disrespectful to use his 'deadname' but it's not disrespectful to use his (presumably supposed to be) Filipino name.
If I called myself Makhosazana Mbongo because I wanted to to be transracial, it would be deemed offensive to African people. But if a trans person calls themself Candy Caine like a two-dollar stripper, then it's evil bigotry hatecrime-quick-call-the-police, if we instead refer to them using their 'deadname' of Martin Smith.
The Daily Dot continues - hilariously they actually believe this shit:
" Because of the insensitive reporting that first went viral, many outlets and Twitter users are either not noting that Ja Du is transgender or discrediting that he is transgender based on his “transracial” status."
Because transgender is totally 100% real folks, and even if Ja Du himself isn't sure, well he'll get there:
"When the Daily Dot reached out to Ja Du about how he identifies (with he/him pronouns for starters), he told us: “Transsexuality and transracialism aren’t the most important things in a sense of who I am. I believe you should be you and I don’t think your identity should be who you are. If people feel compelled to call me a woman or transsexual, that’s just what makes sense to them and I’m OK with it.”
So perhaps Ja Du isn’t quite clear on the significance of labels or the history of race and transgender people in this country—maybe he’ll get there."
Oh, and in case you wondering about the journalist's rather stripperish name, 'Ana Valens', this, folks, is 'Ana':
