https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/nov/08/reddit-incel-involuntary-celibate-men-ban?CMP=fb_guu*

‘Incel’ stands for ‘involuntarily celibate’Hmm Maybe I’m naive but I didn’t even know this dark corner of the internet existed,It had over 40k members! 40k members feeling hard* done by because women don’t want to have sex with them.. From reading* the links in the article is it really surprising why? They* all sound vile and see sex as an entitlement.

I’m* glad the group has now been removed but I’m really really sick of reading about how some men think women owe them sex that they apparently need in the same way they need food and water. These creepy men are living and walking among us and that’s* scary.

I have read that area before. I initially thought it was some kind of sick joke but no, most of them seemed entirely serious.

It will just open up again with a different name. Reddit is full of vile people with platforms

A lot of the feminist sites I subscribe to regularly repeat their posts and in a way I think it's good to know just how much some men hate women. I want to know those fuckers are out there.

In a strange way I agree with this, these people won't disband they will reform elsewhere (as other banned subreddits have e.g fat people hate) or go more underground and then women won't realise that there are men out there who truly loathe women THAT much. I think every time a new woman stumbled on that sub it was a revelation, not because all men are like that but just to see that there are men out there who go to extraordinary lengths to hate women, to think about raping and violent actions. It's a reminder of why we fight against the special-gender-snowflake league because in amongst the genuine transsexual people there are men who will capitalise as much as they can on any loophole or opportunity provided for them because they believe they are entitled to do so.

On the second Topshop thread in AIBU there is a post by a doctor who talks about men in prisons who can't wait to exploit the self identity law - although it made me feel a little nauseous to read (the same as I feel about the incel sub) it was a reminder that there really are men (not trans) out there who will exploit the law. I feel the same about the incel sub, it is just a reminder of some of the attitudes to women out there. As I understand it (from reading a few months ago) one of the incel members has already formed his own forum elsewhere anyway. Reddit has plenty of other delightful subs in this vein - it isn't really a stand against misogyny.

Ok Winnie, it is my considered opinion, anecdotally, that most people think MTF trans people are not actual women. And I stand by it. That was what I meant. Outside universities the vast majority of people think it's ridiculous but they don't give it much thought. That's terribly transphobic I know. I didn't mean they are radical feminist activists.

SelmaAndJubjub · 10/11/2017 16:18

I think posters on this board should be very careful when celebrating the removal of fora where the prevailing view could be described as 'extreme'

Hmm

If any MNetter ever suggests that trans people should be locked into concentration camps and systematically raped, I certainly hope she'll be banned from the site for life.

You really have swallowed the Kool Aid if you think that expressing gender critical views is analogous to wanting to enslave half the population.

MadamMinacious · 10/11/2017 19:00

It has to be said I find absolute denial of biology on the extreme side.

Ereshkigal · 10/11/2017 19:08

Me too, Madam.

user1480334601 · 10/11/2017 19:44

0.001% of the male population of the world subscribed to that group. (and that's assuming they were all men who believed it, alot could be intrigued people wanting to keep an eye on them!)

Absolute creeps. But a minority.

MadamMinacious · 10/11/2017 20:11

True, true - my post may have sounded a little hysterical Grin as if I assumed all men to be this way - I don't, I hope it is a tiny minority. I still found it a bit of a reminder about how some people think. there are other forums out there like this, it isn't the only one and they aren't the only men who think this way. As you say (hopefully) a minority.

AliPfefferman · 10/11/2017 20:47

I’d like to pipe up and beg to massively differ from the idea that “most people” agree with MN’s prevailing opinion on trans issues. I think many, if not most, of us disagree, but we simply don’t have the time, energy, or will to argue with internet strangers who are so vocal and so deeply entrenched in their viewpoints. (I’ve tried, and it’s pointless.) The fact that anyone could think that most people” feel the same way shows what a meaningless echo chamber this forum has become with respect to that issue.

Ereshkigal · 10/11/2017 23:32

Come off it. I make a point of speaking to people about trans issues and it is a niche view that MTF trans are really women. Everyone knows full well they aren't but knows you can't really say this. Check out the comments on any media article. If you think that everyone buys into gender theory, you're the one in the echo chamber.

TheCatsPaws · 12/11/2017 14:41

I actually got banned from that reddit for telling them they’re pathetic scum and the reason they don’t get laid is their ridiculous self pitying, misogynistic attitude. They’re very easily offended.

DeleteOrDecay · 12/11/2017 15:11

They didn’t like the fact that you were speaking the truth Cats.

I disagree. You only have to read the below the line comments to any article in a national newspaper. Any newspaper.

Granted people may not be gender critical or have any idea of the feminist analysis that understands the hierarchy of sex.

But ask most people how many ‘genders’ there and they will say two. Ask most people if they think you can change sex, they will say no. And you will get a duh.

But then ask whether a middle-aged man in a dress should be able to share changing rooms and locker rooms with their eight-year-old daughter purely on his say so and you will get a very ‘gender critical’ response.

The ironic thing is that the women on mumsnet are mostly fairly left-wing, and the very people who would be accommodating of minorities.

If mumsnet can see the Kool-Aid for what it is, you can bet your life Joe Public will.
