If, as some are suggesting above, this is a Tory conspiracy, why is the Early Day motion being supported (to date anyway) entirely by Labour, SNP and Green MPs? Is the left too stupid to see through a Tory conspiracy or perhaps the idea of a Tory conspiracy is not as feasible as some would think?

Jaxhog · 19/10/2017 15:26

I told my husband that from next year I will identifying as a man and joining him at FreeMasons. He wasn't amused.

Otherwise, I will be identifying as a Penguin.

It really is that stupid.

The trans-ideology is a win/win politically.

It appeals to the right because it reinforces gender roles. It appeals to the left because it sounds progressive.

The right will totally buy to a lady brain.

The lefy will totally buy in to another letter on the LGB.

Slimthistime · 19/10/2017 16:19

oh yes I'd like to join the Freemasons as well.

I've yet to hear any MP really question it apart from the one mentioned here.

As far as I can see, every political party is backing this. Why?

Because they think that if they oppose it they will look nasty. Nothing more nothing less. They look across at the competition going down this route and think "mustn't be left behind, mustn't be on the wrong side of history, we'll lose votes". They couldn't give a toss about having a plan that fits together logically*. They are not thinking of the long term. The far-seeing of them are thinking as far as June 2022.

  • look at the planning that was done for Brexit.

look at the planning that was done for Brexit

Excellent point.

misscockerspaniel · 19/10/2017 17:45

Nauticant interesting that you suggest "we'll lose votes" ... the gender identification proposals were not in the Tory party manifesto.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 19/10/2017 17:47

We need to get the message out that this will be a small step forward for trans people and a massive step backwards for women.

nauticant · 19/10/2017 18:03

I think the Tories are far more concerned about being toxic for younger voters and are taking for granted their older base misscockerspaniel.

In the past couple of electoral cycles party manifestos seem to have been relevant up to polling day and then of less significance. Apart from a handful of incendiary promises like EU Ref.
