Women don’t like films

Some of my favourite films are in there. I must be a man.

It is truly absurd to think that taste in films is dictated by sex. They don't categorise DVDs by sex on their website, I wonder why they thought this was a good idea in store!

They have a twitter/facebook presence so maybe you could tweet/post it there and see what their response is?

The whole “for him” or “for her” lists of movies/TV shows/books/etc are ridiculous! Didn’t know my sex predisposes me to liking certain genres!

You know what bugs me about stuff like this? It's how thoughtless and automatic it is. By that I mean, some employee or manager or whoever's idea this was probably just thought "Hey, let's put a bunch of action-y or whatever movies together and label them 'Films for Him!' It'll highlight these movies so they sell faster!" And it probably didn't even occur to them that, hey, that's really sexist! We should at least have an equally stereotypical "Films for Her" section so we don't leave women out! Or maybe just label all these movies "Action Movies" or "Really Fun Movies" or whatever, because whether you're a man or a woman has nothing to do with the kind of films you enjoy!

In the grand scheme of things, how dvds are sorted is not that important; but I think what I'm trying to say is that these kind of little things illustrates the underlying sexism.

DS has renamed the TV channel "Movies for Men" as "Movies for Mummies", given that it has loads of tenth rate 70s and 80s disaster movies (of the made-for-tv/straight to video variety) which I have a not-so-secret passion for. There is just something so comforting after a day at work to settle down to watch a sea of lava engulf the Whitehouse/ big freeze hit downtown Houston/ yet another cruise liner sink after meeting a particularly sharp penguin beak at an inopportune moment. I rather like crappy war movies too, because as a "woman of a certain age" they remind me of my childhood (not the actual second world war, I'm not quite that old, more Sunday afternoons as a kid watching them on one of the three TV channels we had on our black and white telly).

Dh has just told me that he is going to watch Love actually every week til Christmas...its his favourite film

I much prefer an action movie...or a bunch of people beimg slaughtered in a deserted mansion

I came into this thread to earnestly harrumph about the unappealing torrent of sausage fest trash which Hollywood cranks out, but the opening post took things in a different direction. I draw the line at musicals and really gory horror films, but I'll watch all sorts. And I love nothing better than a decent action movie (think: Aliens), thoughtful war film or some cracking sci-fi. Nope, still female.

I'm also doing my bit to break down sex stereotypes - my 9 year old son loves a good romcom.

Agree about the channel Movies for Men, some great films on there and i did comment to DH when it came out that it was a bit off naming it that. I have never watched a romcom or chickflick (as they call them) in my life, i love scifi, horror, action, postapocolyptic, etc.

It's true that men/women tend to gravitate to different films, but I don't think it's helpful to segregate the films themselves.

It was an excellent film.

The BFI have some statistic about cinema audiences by age, gender, social class and so on. It is apparent that more men go to the cinema to watch action/sci-fi than women, whereas women watch a broader range of films.

Just spotted Paper Towns in OP's pic. It's on Netflix at the mo & its good. I wouldn't have pagged it as a bloke film though.
