According to The Range, apparently Angry

There wasn’t even a separate ‘For Her’ section.

Some of my favourite films are in there. I must be a man.

I had to explain Starship Troopers to DF as they didnt get it was an allegory.

badbadhusky · 12/10/2017 23:47

Starship Troopers was an allegory? Shock Tell me more.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 12/10/2017 23:52

Hurrah! My film tastes are in a younger age bracket than my chronological age

I go to the cinema on average once a fortnight but haven't seen any of the films mentioned in that article.

I like a good action film, or sci-fi, or disaster movies. I picked seeing Deadpool for Valentine's Day when it came out. Last time I checked I was still female.

DS1 knows Moana off by heart. Is that a girly film? Or does it not count because it has the Rock in?

SerendipityFelix · 13/10/2017 08:07

I’m not usually a Twitter-er..... I might try and work it out later. Scared of getting feministy on there though.

So, men focus their interest on one or two genres (the manly genres) and women like everything. Maybe men would like more films in the comfort of their own home but feel uncomfortable going to see a "girly" film. Someone might see them!

This is interesting
(if unsurprising)women make up half of cinemagoers but the stats of women making films are awful.

I don't think that's true at all, although retailers might believe that.

picklemepopcorn · 13/10/2017 08:41

Grasping at straws... is it to do with Christmas? Have they started displays about things to buy for 'him' as men are notoriously difficult to buy for?

Trills · 13/10/2017 08:43

I was quoting the BFI research linked above
www.bfi.org.uk/sites/bfi.org.uk/files/downloads/bfi-statistical-yearbook-audiences-2015-2016-08-25.pdf

"A wide range of genres appealed to women, whereas men were drawn to films with a strong action element."

"A wide range of genres appealed to women, whereas men were drawn to films with a strong action element."

I suppose this is true if you include porn. Action, but of a different kind.

SerendipityFelix · 14/10/2017 06:33

"A wide range of genres appealed to women, whereas men were drawn to felt pressured by societal ‘toxic masculinity’ gender sterotyping to prefer films with a strong action element."

There you go, BFI, fixed that for you Grin

Good fixing

I have noticed that my local cinema is showing the latest Reese Witherspoon film this afternoon.

If I go to watch it I am:
a - reinforcing a gender stereotype that women like films about romance (bad)
b - spending money to encourage studios to make more women-led films (good - especially since it's also directed by a woman)

PricklyBall · 16/10/2017 20:35

Ah, movies for mummies has come up trumps again - a truly terrible deadly disease infects tropical island and it's a race against time for the medics to prevent a global pandemic...

MrsFionaCharming · 17/10/2017 00:15

Ha! DPs film collection includes Beauty & The Beast, Tangled, Mulan, and Moana.

We watched Tangled together not long after we starting dating, and he cried at the lantern scene.

But I guess that doesn’t fit the toxic masculinity that advertisers seem to love so much.
