tv shows for an 11 year old?

She's at that awkward age, too old for kids stuff, but not old enough for most of the adult shows. When I reach back in time and show her things I remember as being great they usually haven't aged well and the jokes are unfortunate at best.

She could do with a box-set of something to take her mind off other stuff.

Any recommendations? Particularly of older shows which are easier for us to get hold of than things airing now (we're outside UK).

She loves Bake-off, Doctor Who, Red Dwarf, and Monty Python.

Depends what genres she likes. Netflix has a full array of series and films that could help. There are teen films and series. Smallville perhaps or maybe some of the current superhero ones (Flash? Arrow? Supergirl?). Buffy was great.

My dd who is the same age loves Once Upon a Time and the Unfortunate events series. Both Netflix. She is working her way through modern family and likes Miranda. She also likes watching don’t tell the bride!

Some of her friends watch pretty little liars on Netflix but it’s not dd’s thing at all.

What about Gilmore Girls? I love Buffy but wonder if she's that bit young yet (I'd be waiting for the box set to drop in price in your position, saving it for the future!).

Once Upon A Time would be good - literally subverting fairytale stereotypes and lots of strong female leads. And pretty PG from what I recall.

Timeless on Netflix is great for all the family, but my kids (12 & 9) absolutely loved it. Strong female lead & it is very well written, using the time travel aspect to highlight sexist and racist attitudes and challenge them. Only 1 season so far, but the network that produced it have reversed their decision to axe it & a second season is in production.

If she likes Doctor Who, has she seen the Sara Jane Adventures? Both DS (who is 15) and I have just rewatched them, and they are so great.

The Legend of Korra. It's an animated series with lots of awesome female characters and really excellent storylines.

I watch Star Trek DS9 and Voyager with DD. Also, the new one Discovery. In fact, we are all watching that.

We watched Gilmore Girls about a year ago.

Tried Buffy but it was too scary. We will return to it.

Dh watches lots of animé with the kids and females figure highly I believe but it's not my cup of tea.

Oh, with Gilmore Girls we did a lot of scoffing at taking such shoddy treatment from men. It is funny and lovely though.

Buffy def too old for her, for now.

Gilmore Girls a bit too relashionshippy for her I think. She claims to find love stories squicky.

Will look up Sarah Jane Adventures, Korra and Timeless. Haven't ever heard of either.

I second call the midwife. What about stargate sg1? I loved it when I was around that age, Samantha Carter is fab.

Firefly has an "escort" as one of the main chars, it is rated 15, as is buffy.

Buffy was on at 6pm in the UK, the first few series are very PG. It's certainly no worse than Red Dwarf.

I can see how series 6 was 15 though.

I think the issue with Buffy is that it 'grew up' with its viewers. Early seasons are pretty teeny, boyfriend angst, fitting slaying round homework...Like Miffer says, later story lines with the dynamics between Buffy and Spike gets very dark around season 6, there's a reason it's a 15...I wouldn't want my DD watching that at 11.
