Person who raped a 15-year old girl found dead in prison

My sympathy is limited. The judge said that Martin Eatough was likely to be a risk to women for the rest of his life. I would assume that doesn't change if Martin takes hormones and identifies as Jade. And yet at some point this person could have expected to be transferred to a women's prison?

If you are going to want it nailed down with precise figures, then no it hasn't been calculated.

But it's done by looking at the total number of suicides, and the sex/gender of those who have taken their own life and seeing in what proportions they occur. There is a body of published peer reviewed papers on this.

I haven't come across serious stats that suggest that the picture as shown in the literature is wrong. And I'd genuinely be interested in links to any that do.

BigDeskBob · 08/10/2017 11:27

What are the suicide rates of men, women and transgender people?

Lagerthaisfabulous · 08/10/2017 11:43

The whole suicide rate is higher for trans gender people isnt accurate. And is impossible to prove the link.

Autisim and trans are very much linked. More and more is being learned about this. Whats the suide rate for those with autisim and/or mental health problems.

This rapist will be added into the trans suicide figures. Despite the fact that its clear to most he wasnt trans. He wanted in to a womens prison.

Trans isnt a fact. Anyone can claim to be it. Even if they arent. Suicide recorded by sex or race is facts. Its not comparable.

DJBaggySmalls · 08/10/2017 12:29

Theres a shockingly high rate of suicide amongst women who are suffering domestic violence, it could be as high as 8 women in the UK every week. Thats not the rate for unsuccessful attempts.

stitchglitched · 08/10/2017 12:44

There is also a very high rate of PTSD symptoms and suicidal thoughts amongst rape victims. I hope this rapist's victims are recovering from their trauma.

ArcheryAnnie · 08/10/2017 14:57

The suicide rate is higher for men than for women. And it's higher for transgender people than for men.

Not in prison, it isn't, VikingVolva.

Last year there were 119 suicides in prison. Since women prisoners constitute only 5% of the total prison population, that should mean that of that 119, six at maximum would be women. But double that number, 12 female prisoners, died in this way.

If you widen the category beyond "successful" suicide, then the figures are even worse. Despite making up only 5% of the population women accounted for 21% of all incidents of self-harm in prison last year.

HornyTortoise · 08/10/2017 16:21

Finding it hard to care, infact I am much happier with news that he killed himself than news that he is 'reformed' and out to attack again which it would have been otherwise.

The tone of the article though, that basically he should have been put in with the women and then he might not have killed himself...its just disgusting. Fuck the female people who would have been at huge risk, just so some misogynistic rapist would be happier, eh...

I tend to not care when monsters kill themselves. Its better all round really. If this makes me heartless, so be it.

CosmicPineapple · 08/10/2017 16:23

I wish all rapists would follow suit. No sympathy. Not one ounce.

AngelsSins · 10/10/2017 12:53

Could not give a fuck, and I'm happy he did it before he wormed his way into a female prison to attack more women. Can't believe any woman would feel sympathy for a man who would happily rape them!

The article is a disgrace though, it's such an insult to women to refer to a rapist as "she".

That's a shitty thing to say, Bingo. Are you trolling?

Ereshkigal · 12/10/2017 09:25

I think they imagine they are making some kind of point about women who don't like rapists.

BingoFlamingo · 12/10/2017 11:00

I was only making the point that numerous others have made, that it was a good thing he's dead, and that it might be good if other rapists killed themselves.

BingoFlamingo · 12/10/2017 11:01

Cosmic pineapple above me made the exact same point as me. shrug

hipsterfun · 12/10/2017 18:34

You wrote 'men in prison' (or similar), you didn't specify.

MN made the right call.

FuckShitJackFairy · 15/10/2017 08:21

'Person' who raped girl.

MAN who raped girl.

christinarossetti · 15/10/2017 08:52

I've been having a discussion with someone about this, and they keep saying, and I quote, 'the suicide rate for trans people in correctly gender aligned prisons is significantly lower than in incorrectly aligned prisons'. They don't have any data to back this up, of course.

The only info that I can find is that there have been two suicides by trans women in women's prisons since 1990. But, as ArcheryAnnie points out, the suicide and self-harm rates for women in prison are disproportionately high and no-one seems too upset about that.

Where is all this hard data on trans suicides? Or is it, as I suspect, utter bullshit?
