Apparently I shouldn't use the term SEX

Says DD (30).

It is politically correct to say gender. I told her sex is the biological term for the physical body (dna etc) and gender was a social construct

Nope... apparently we should just say gender

Hmm

If it makes anyone feel better I am going to try and only use sex from now on in any formal writing form now on.
I am also only going to ask 'are you going to find the sex out?' to pregnant friends.
Just to redress the balance on the side of us young ones (I'm 29)

Norland · 01/10/2017 21:46

CancellyMcChequeface
I filled out a medical form recently.........'this question is for people with testicles.'......

Plural of testicle is testes.

No wonder the country is going to the dogs (there's a ball-licking reference there somewhere)

Lancelottie · 01/10/2017 22:29

How big does a breast need to be to count for that survey, and would yer average moob count?

My (XY male) uncle had breast cancer, so the term doesn't seem to be exclusively female.

StinkPickle · 02/10/2017 09:27

Oh for fucks sake.

I"m 31 and know it is SEX and that gender is a social construct. Babies have a sex, they do not have a gender.

dontslouchdarling · 02/10/2017 17:25

I had to complete a survey at work today. It asked me for my "gender identity" and then for my "gender assigned at birth". There wasn't an option to reply "I'M FEMALE WHICH IS MY SEX YOU FUCKING IDIOTS" nor was there a free text box where I could have explained why I objected to the question so ticked "prefer not to say" Angry

TheFallenMadonna · 02/10/2017 17:30

Testes is the plural of testis. Not testicle, which is an alternative name for testis.

user1487175389 · 02/10/2017 17:31

Your daughter sounds a bit prudish.

cafeaulaitpourvous · 02/10/2017 17:44

She isn’t prudish - she says the term sex isn’t PC and I should use the word gender.....

She isn’t prudish but she is brainwashed in my opinion

OP posts:
ErrolTheDragon · 02/10/2017 17:46

Its scientifically correct. Reality is reality.

TheFallenMadonna · 02/10/2017 17:49

My 13yo, who is not prudish, gave me a little lecture last weekend about gender vs sex (psychology vs biology she said...). I lectured her back on gender as a social construct, and also (just to confuse things) showed her several scientific papers that use gender to mean biological sex.

Ttbb · 02/10/2017 18:00

You are correct. Sex refers to presence or Y chromosome while gender is a social construct.

DamsonGin · 02/10/2017 18:03

I know someone who worked as a chicken sexer. (not sure if I can add anything intelligent to the conversation)

MCBeatsandGrindah · 02/10/2017 18:05

Damson did she have a record for how many she could do in a minute?

Elendon · 02/10/2017 18:12

My betting is that your daughter's sexuality has been hijacked, such a shame in someone so young.

She couldn't possibly enjoy sex if she confuses sex and gender.

TheFallenMadonna · 02/10/2017 18:17

I am well aware what sex means. Gender is much more problematic to define. There are a number of commonly used definitions I think.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/10/2017 18:24

Indeed. One of the meanings of 'gender' is as a euphemism for 'sex'. Hence the trick being played on us all of conflating the two and then substituting a fundamentally different one.

IndominusRex · 02/10/2017 18:24

@dont - I had the same thing today! I ticked 'other' and wrote 'gender is a social construct' as my comment.

BossyBitch · 02/10/2017 18:30

That's great! I've met this great bloke recently and, upon hearing this, I'm leaning towards testing his ideological suitability by asking him if he thinks I'm a slut if I agree to gender after the second date ... Grin

I all seriousness, though, as someone with a little background in the social sciences, I find this to be utterly ridiculous!

Thelilywhite · 02/10/2017 18:38

Me too Bossy! I used to teach the difference between the two terms to my sociology students in feminist theory class. The totally got it and never conflagated the two. Mind you that was 15 years ago....

dontslouchdarling · 02/10/2017 18:41

indominus I really wish there'd been a free text option or an option to tick "other" then put "female". It just added to my rage at the posters displayed at work currently highlighting transgender issues including asking "Do you know what CIS mean? No? Come to our highly informative training and let us enlighten you!!".

Oh fuck off.

nauticant · 02/10/2017 18:44

nor was there a free text box where I could have explained why I objected to the question so ticked "prefer not to say"

I had the same thing today! I ticked 'other' and wrote 'gender is a social construct' as my comment.

Whenever I'm tempted to do that the thing holding me back is that I'll be added to the numbers for trans people.

cuirderussie · 02/10/2017 18:57

What baffles me is that the word "sex" as in male or female was cheerfully and accurately used by 19th century novelists without any need for euphemism.Hmm

whoputthecatout · 02/10/2017 18:58

Do you know what CIS means?

It's the world that TAs use when they are trying to claim the word "woman" for themselves. Or, as you say, fuck off.

whoputthecatout · 02/10/2017 18:58

word , not word.....though I suspose it is now such a growing fashion, world would be a better fit...

whoputthecatout · 02/10/2017 18:59

word not world - oh for goodness fat fingers Angry
