I ain't clicking The daily mail, what's the gist of it?

BlackForestCake · 16/09/2017 23:51

However awful the TRAs’ side of the story is, the Mail’s take is sure to be even worse, so I have no interest in reading it.

PerspicaciaTick · 16/09/2017 23:54

Well - that wasn't as bad as I expected. It started off a bit peculiarly, seeming to suggest that the incident was a pitched battle with both sides throwing punches. It also seemed to think that the feminists embrace being called TERFs (rather than it generally being an abusive term used by TAs).
However, once I got passed the first couple of headline grabbing paragraphs, the article did seem to give fairly reasonable coverage. They include the slowed down video footage and seem to have interviewed and photographed Maria themselves. Plus a rather wishywashy quote from Goldsmiths trying to balance supporting inclusion while not condoning violence.

whoputthecatout · 16/09/2017 23:59

The article has just been discussed on Sky"s what the papers say programme. One of the commentators highlighted the fact that a double rapist had been put in a woman's prison and that Ian Brady was now calling himself a woman.

Gradually, the message is getting through......

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 17/09/2017 00:44

It is The Daily Mail, not the Daily Sturmer- even The Mail occasionally gets things right. Here is the text. It also has a link to the video and photos of Maria McLachlan.

Ladies, ladies! Fists fly in politically correct punch-up after transgender activists try to turf the TERFs ('Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminists') out of Hyde Park

By Mark Wood And Sanchez Manning For The Mail On Sunday

Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminists clashed with their enemies Trans Activists
Maria MacLachlan was attacked at Speakers’ Corner in London’s Hyde Park
The 60-year-old mother-of-two was left shaken and the police are investigating
The transgender issue is the most sensitive in Britain today, sparking passionate debate among equal-rights campaigners

But now that passion has erupted into the sort of outright violence normally associated with football hooligans.

Two factions – the Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminists (or so-called TERFs) and their bitter enemies Trans Activists – clashed in an unseemly bust-up that ended with a 60-year-old woman being bundled to the ground and punched in the face. The incident was caught on video and is now being investigated by the police.

Mother-of-two Maria MacLachlan, who describes herself as a ‘gender critical feminist’, was attacked at Speakers’ Corner in London’s Hyde Park at about 7pm on Wednesday

Gender warfare: A hoodie-wearing protester raises a fist during the brawl
She had joined around 50 fellow TERFs who were to be given details of the secret location for a talk entitled What Is Gender? The Gender Recognition Act And Beyond.

TERFs are feminists who are opposed to some campaigning by transgender women.

The event was originally scheduled to be held at a community centre in New Cross, South-East London, but was switched following online warnings of a protest from Trans Activists.

Among the groups threatening to protest were the LGBTQ+ Society from Goldsmiths University, an organisation called Sisters Uncut, and Action For Trans Health London. Ms MacLachlan told The Mail on Sunday: ‘I was chatting to one of the speakers, Miranda Yardley, and people started to come who looked different to the rest of us. There was quite a generation thing.

Ms Yardley is a prominent transgender writer and was guest speaker at the event along with Dr Julia Long, who describes herself as a ‘lesbian feminist and defender of women-only spaces’. Ms MacLachlan said: ‘Julia said she was going to sing a song she had written. She took a megaphone and as soon as she put it to her lips, these kids started shouting, “When the TERFs attack, we fight back.”

‘I thought, “I can film this, it will be interesting.” They were getting louder and louder. Then suddenly someone tried to grab my camera. It was scary. Someone kept trying to get my camera. I think it was a girl, but I couldn’t tell because they had a hoodie over their eyes.’

Mother-of-two Maria MacLachlan (pictured), who describes herself as a ‘gender critical feminist’, was attacked at Speakers’ Corner in London’s Hyde Park at about 7pm on Wednesday
Footage of the incident was uploaded to YouTube the day after the alleged attack, and it has since been viewed tens of thousands of times.

In a statement to police, Ms MacLachlan later identified a trans-woman who is currently trying to raise £5,000 for vocal-cord surgery to make her voice higher, as one of her attackers.

Her Lumix camera was smashed and the memory card stolen. She also sustained a nasty bruise on her face, red marks on her neck and grazed knees. She added: ‘I didn’t go to hospital but it has really shaken me up.’

Several feminists called 999 and three cars containing six officers arrived on the scene, but no arrests were made.

Notes were passed among the feminists letting them know the secret venue was the University Women’s Club in Mayfair.

They left in small groups hoping not to be followed but were tracked down by the activists. Another feminist, Jen Izaakson, said tension remained high at the venue. She added: ‘The staff had to form a human chain to let our people in and keep protesters out.’

Because students from Goldsmiths had been so vocal in opposing the original meeting, the feminists believe they formed a section of the protesters.

A spokesman for the university said: ‘Goldsmiths prides itself on its diverse and inclusive community. We uphold the right to peaceful protest but cannot condone violence.’

Action for Trans Health London issued a statement saying: ‘We condemn violence against women in all forms. We’re proud that many self-organising activists, allies and supporters stood against hatred, misogyny and intimidation.’

A Scotland Yard spokesman confirmed an investigation was ongoing and video evidence would form part of their inquiries.

Datun · 17/09/2017 01:01

Action for Trans Health London issued a statement saying: ‘We condemn violence against women in all forms. We’re proud that many self-organising activists, allies and supporters stood against hatred, misogyny and intimidation.’

Nope. This is the group responsible for the violence. This is the group who called transactivists to arms in the first place. Who rang around trying to find the venue. Who 'liked' the let's fuck up some terfs comment.

The statement they put out the next day put the blame firmly on the victim. And just saying they would never put up with violence towards transwomen.

It's since been deleted.

That quote was designed specifically for that article. It is the complete opposite of what they said. Because it is they who committed the violence.

It's all documented. See link.

The Daily Mail's take on Wednesday's violence
ColinTheDachshund · 17/09/2017 01:41

Maybe the DM would like, for balance, to add a statement along the lines of:

A bunch of ordinary women would like to say: ‘We condemn violence against women in all forms. We’re proud that these ordinary women stood against hatred, misogyny and intimidation on our behalf. We're sorry that while doing so they were subjected to physical violence, hatred and intimidation, arising from misogyny. '

BetsyM00 · 17/09/2017 01:43

I know, Datun. Specific lines were lifted from a statement they made last Wednesday night on their Facebook page:

"We condemn violence against women in all forms. We do not collaborate with police and those who do are implicated in the institutional and continuing violence against gender non conforming people, particularly trans women of colour, who also face the intersecting violence of racism and transmisogny.
There was an incident this evening which will be hatefully and wrongly depicted by TERFs as male violence. Do not be deceived by violent attempts to discredit and erase our struggle.
Our fight for Trans liberation is and always will be a feminist battle, and will be fought alongside the struggles of sisters and siblings across the world for an end to the violence against women that is perpetuated by cisheteropatriarchy. Let no one be deceived that they are fighting for all women if they are not fighting on these terms.
We're proud that today many self-organising activists, allies and supporters stood united against hatred, misogyny and intimidation. NO TO MALE VIOLENCE, NO TO CARCERAL FEMINISM. WHEN THE TERFS ATTACK, WE FIGHT BACK."

BetsyM00 · 17/09/2017 01:45

Oops, though still relevant, I've posted on the wrong thread. Too many tabs open, sorry.

ColinTheDachshund · 17/09/2017 01:56

Totally relevant, perhaps the DM would like to print the whole thing. They might have to explain what 'carceral feminism' is, never heard that term before ... hard to find a definition but it seems against male violence which you wouldn't think from that juxtaposition.

Datun · 17/09/2017 02:09

BetsyM00

Ooh good. I'm glad you've got a record.

SerfTerf · 17/09/2017 02:47

It seems the headline has been changed.

The Daily Mail's take on Wednesday's violence
OlennasWimple · 17/09/2017 03:53

The headline has changed again:

Ladies, ladies! Fists fly in politically correct punch-up after transgender activists try to turf the TERFs ('Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminists') out of Hyde Park

alltheworld · 17/09/2017 06:11

Seems anyone who raises questions about trans activism is labelled a terf

Collidascope · 17/09/2017 07:14

Seems anyone who raises questions about trans activism is labelled a terf

Yeah, the inaccuracy of it drives me mad seeing as trans men are very much covered by feminist action -low vat on sanitary products, abortion rights, etc.

Terfing · 17/09/2017 12:12

It's a terrible article. The writers clearly don't know or understand the subject matter.

That said, they get a round of applause from me for daring to report the issue!

Viviennemary · 17/09/2017 12:22

I don't get it either. All those new terms to learn. Carceral feminism. what's that.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 17/09/2017 12:41

My first thought at that article was 'grrr' because they've made it sound like a catfight and misunderstood the reasons.
However, on reflection, they have done a pretty reasonable job at explaining the chain of events. They haven't fallen for any of the transactivist shit about Maria starting it and certainly haven't attempted to make out she deserved it for daring to be a terf.
Also, the video they have embedded includes captions which make it very clear how the beating proceeded, and explain the chain of events with the attacker trying to steal her camera. If you don't understand about the camera it is quite confusing to watch which is why elsewhere on the internet some people (Owen Jones, I am looking at you, you should know better) have fallen for the rewritings the transactivists are trying to put about.

NoMoreNotToday · 20/09/2017 18:05

Ian Brady is dead I think you mean Ian Huntley pp

HornyTortoise · 20/09/2017 19:47

Ian Brady is dead I think you mean Ian Huntley pp

I think this is probably because the sky news woman said Ian Brady to start with, before being corrected then laughing about how it would be pretty hard for Brady to be shifted to a female prison

SeaRabbit · 21/09/2017 08:23

There was a brief article in The Times today by Janice Turner, who was actually there, talking about the lies that are being spun. I can't link because of the paywall so here's the text:

Conspiracy theories silence the brutal truth

It is a bizarre experience as a journalist to witness an event which then spins off into a myriad of conspiracy theories. I wrote on Saturday how a feminist campaigner was punched at Speakers’ Corner by a trans rights activist. A video online confirms what I saw with my own eyes.
To recap: a woman taking photos had her camera snatched and, while wrestling with the snatcher, was smacked in the head by a tall, male-bodied person in make-up. (I can’t confirm if the assailant was male or a trans woman as s/he legged it before we could discuss pronouns.)
This was a simple, prosaic, spontaneous fracas. But since it is dire publicity for trans activists, affirming the long-held feminist view that their cause is drenched in aggressive misogyny, the fake news machine cranked up. Since then I’ve read some fabulous theories from people as far flung as Seattle: that feminists employed professional actors to play violent trans women; that the victim started it by strangling a campaigner; that I was there not to report on an issue which interests me, but personally tasked by Rupert Murdoch to stage-manage anti-trans propaganda.
Whoosh, down we tumble into an underworld of distorting mirrors, where inconvenient truths are dissolved in the acid of unreason.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/09/2017 08:36

Searabbit - ah, I was thinking of linking to that - despite the paywall it can be done. I found completely by accident that the times app lets you copy and share a limited number of links (I still don't know how many per day/week) - not many people seem to have found this yet.

Datun · 21/09/2017 08:38

Well done Janice. She must have received such a backlash for her original article. This has brought out the warrior in her.

The conspiracy theories are ludicrous, but they are also dangerous. You get the no smoke without fire brigade.

I hope people look at the videos and make up their own minds.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/09/2017 09:22

Her head has been well above the parapet on this for a long time, I think.

Datun · 21/09/2017 09:44

ErrolTheDragon

Thank God someone is. Although I don't remember the times publishing articles like this, much before. So I'm grateful to them, too.
