I was offering the cat a bit of chicken yesterday and she wasn't as interested as I thought she would be.

My friend said, "maybe she is self identifying as a rabbit and wants lettuce instead"

That's how much you have infiltrated my thoughts and influenced my arguments with said friend.

Ps I'd have thought carrots were male. They're pretty phallic.

RaininSummer · 19/08/2017 08:04

Brilliance thread. I so hope the kid above has picked up on how crazy it all is.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 19/08/2017 08:09

*I thought that was normal?

Possibly it is. It's a new one on me, though, that when I shout to the dogs "Wee time!" and open the door, the first one out and weeing is the cat*

I knew it would end up being about toilets. Trans cat wants to use the dogs' toilet.

pootlepootle · 19/08/2017 08:21

I am Rufus

In my house my 14yo dc (born dd) says there's a rainbow. gender isn't binary.

they (the new self identifier for individuals who live on a rainbow) struggle very badly in maths so i'm proud they know what binary means but she might just be copying what she saw on you tube and when not being a social justice warrior she can't be bothered with any of it-.

KickAssAngel · 19/08/2017 09:05

It was a silly, funny moment. But yes, even 9 year olds are now post-trans-peak.

btw, I also have a cat who is really a trans-dog, a DH who is really a trans-couch-potato, and a DD who is so uncertain about herself that I suspect that she's a trans-trans.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 19/08/2017 09:14

DH who is really a trans-couch-potato

Isn't that normal?

sashh · 19/08/2017 09:17

Just because they were born (?grown) that way doesn't mean they are destined to be that way - have you not seen the news about the blig carrot? Squeezing itself into bling like that, that could only be female.

Grin this thread is comedy gold. DP keeps pestering me to get a dog, I can now use the possibility that said hypothetical dog may identify as a trans-cat, we are not cat people so it would be an absolute disaster.

My parents have two rabbits, one of which I caught in the local park (he is an English so I didn't just kidnap a wild rabbit) he can climb trees! We thought he had escaped for the millionth time and after hours searching couldn't find him, had given up hope, eventually found him 8 foot up on the garden wall, he had scaled the ivy growing up a tree. Perhaps he identifies as a squirrel?

ButtHoleinOne · 19/08/2017 10:21

I can't believe you assumed that animal's gender and species!Angry

sashh · 19/08/2017 11:06

Hello. I'm sashh's friend, the one who said the original comment about her cat.

Right now (if you could see me) I am wearing the look of total defeat on my face.

I can't believe this has spiraled so far out of control.

I'm done. Seriously....

P.S. I self identify as an aromantic, male lesbian.

My cat says just because she acts dog e.g likes going for walks with us on the school run, to local shops, goes with DD to her friend's house (but I think that's to annoy friend's dog.) doesn't mean she is identifying as a dog.
Apparently her brain is a bit more dog than cat (well I think that's what she is thinking.)

MissMoneyPlant · 19/08/2017 11:41

ButtHoleInOne Ugh, that article! Shock Confused Angry

I’m not talking about the outright bigotry and hatred –something I can’t know without being in their shoes — but the complete cluelessness.

Translation:
"I'm not talking about actual bigotry or hatred, but utter bollocks".

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 19/08/2017 11:54

Cats, like humans, have specific sex based health issues. That cat article is , words fail me.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 19/08/2017 12:01

What I found amusing about the cat article was that I tend to correct people when they do use gender neutral language around animals, referring to them as 'it'.

sashh · 19/08/2017 12:25

I've been asked to point out that my friend actually self identifies as an aromantic, male lesbian, Degu.

OP posts:
YetAnotherSpartacus · 19/08/2017 12:31

I read that as aromatic. I thought you meant they were a bit whiffy.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 19/08/2017 13:41

What I found amusing about the cat article was that I tend to correct people when they do use gender neutral language around animals, referring to them as 'it'

Oh so do I. I hate animals being described as "it". I also correct my husband when he refers to our female cat as "he". She is the first female cat we've had in over 30 years of serving to feline needs and it seems to confuse him.

VestalVirgin · 19/08/2017 14:01

Ps I'd have thought carrots were male. They're pretty phallic.

No, carrots are female. As are peas. (In German, vegetables do have grammatical genders.)
As Mark Twain famously pointed out, a root vegetable is more female than a woman. (Not true anymore, since the German word for woman isn't in use anymore, it has been replaced by the one that actually means "lady" and has female gender)

Most foodstuffs seem to be female, hm, I wonder why.

Salad is male, as is broccoli, but carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers and peas are female.

So are bananas, I bet you are surprised. Grin

NoLoveofMine · 19/08/2017 14:03

over 30 years of serving to feline needs

Grin

Many people do default to "he" when talking of animals, everyone in this household does when we discuss the various cats which regularly visit our garden (and sometimes house) though I often correct this.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 19/08/2017 14:21

No, carrots are female. As are peas. (In German, vegetables do have grammatical genders.)

I actually googled "do carrots have sex?" And then I wished I hadn't. Substituting 'gender' for 'sex' didn't help much either.

Intrigued! Can you explain?

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 19/08/2017 14:23

Cis-cats need to check their privilege

I've just asked my 3 to check- they have reported all privilege fully intact and fully operational.

NoLoveofMine · 19/08/2017 15:01

Typical cis-cats - flaunting their privilege without a thought for trans-cats, non-binary cats and those somewhere on the cat/dog spectrum who don't define as either.

VestalVirgin · 19/08/2017 15:21

Intrigued! Can you explain?

Sure. I think the example Twain used to prove that German was an insane language (you should be able to find the essay via google, I think) was:

Die Rübe - Das Weib

"die" is the female article, "das" is neutral.
Rübe is a root vegetable, Weib is woman.

It is "das Weib" and "es", that would be as if you had "the woman" and "it" in English.

Nowadays, the word used in everyday life is "Frau", which originally only was used for noblewomen, and has female gender - "die Frau".

Grammatical gender in German is very weird because there's not much of a connection to sex. Most of the things that have a grammatical gender in German don't have any sex whatsoever, and some living beings that actually have a sex are neutral in grammar. (Animal species have genders, too, and if you want to talk about an individual animal whose sex doesn't match the grammatical gender of the species, you have to add more words to make it clear)

MissMoneyPlant · 19/08/2017 17:47

Well I'm shocked that you of all people would jump on this ridiculous bandwagon and language policing, rather than stick with the biological facts that are plain to see! Carrots are clearly male. Ahem.
