Films with interesting women

Have recently watched Pedro Almodovar's Julietta and re-watched Volver. I love the women in these films.

They left me wanting more.

I wonder if anyone has any recommendations?

(As an aside - I spotted my local cinema have started marking films as "F-rated".

I'm sure there must be some...will get back to you when my brain has come up with something!

Some of the ones off the top of my head which have strong, interesting female lead parts, some biographical some fictional, include:
Frida - about Frida Kahlo
There is a film about Sophie Scholl, not sure on the name
Frozen River
Fargo
Juno
The French film Manon des Sources

I'm sure I'll think of more

Can't think of the title of the film of the true story of a whistle-blower about the effects of a chemical company/big pharma on the local population, despite death threats and threats to her family. Think it may have been lates 80's/90's.

Erin Brokovich? though she was a lawyer I think.
North Country is good too.

Hidden Figures
Tiny Furniture (Lena Dunham so has marmite warning)

In general I find TV is better for interesting female characters. Mad Men, Handmaid's tale, Glow, Jessica Jones, Garfunkel & Oates, Crazy ex girlfriend.

SkaterGrrrrl · 09/07/2017 22:41

Juno

Red Eye starring rachel mcadams is a good thriller with a strong female lead.

The Contender is fantastic.
It was written especially for Joan Allen (who is fabulous in everything). It's a political thriller about a woman nominated to be the first US vice president. Really highly recommended.

byebyeapplepie · 10/07/2017 11:48

This is a great list thanks. Really varied. Much better than I'd managed googling.

Live Flesh (another Almodovar)
Heavenly creatures
Black swan
