The hard left's problem with women

Looking at front page of the Times listing those labour MPs being targeted by momentum for deselection and idly wondering; why do most of them seem to be women - and in particular, women with string track records on feminist issues? I mean Stella Creasy for gods sake? I'm not a labour voter I admit but how could anyone vote for a party who deselected a woman of her calibre?
Is it me or do these people have a problem?

There is massive misogyny within the hard left. Has been forever really.

KarlosKKrinkelbeim · 07/07/2017 20:49

Have read full article now and it seems that bar two - umunna and Bradshaw - it's all women being targeted.
I know there are lots of corbyn acolytes in MN so I look forward to one of them explaining wtf is going on. Other than slapping down uppity women who dare to criticise men of course.

It isn't the saintly Corbyn himself of course who is saying this. Whether as leader he debuts this list or is happy just to let he idea lie and gather momentum ( no pun intended) will be interesting.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 07/07/2017 21:34

Debuts??? debunks

OlennasWimple · 07/07/2017 21:43

I agree, and I find it incredibly troubling. I think it's another facet of the anti-semitism and conservative Islam that has found a home in the left wing TBH

so why are young women - and older ones if this place is anything to go by - falling for this? The whole thing reeks of misogyny.

I've not read the time article but I've seen the list and i wouldn't say there is a mysoginistic slant on it. There are also men on the list and all in the 'hostile' list have had publicised criticism of Corbyn so it's clear that is the reason they are considered 'hostile' and not their sex.

Saying that, I don't like this and i don't like the idea of Momentum trying to get these MPs deselected. I hope that Corbyn tells them to back off because it is this kind of shit that will make him unelectable.

Walkingtowork · 07/07/2017 22:19

When I found out some Labour members don't support All Women Shortlists for election candidates, or feminism in general, I got a partial explanation: apparently some of the hard left are still very obsessed with class issues and see feminism as middle class, therefore not their problem.

That obviously isn't the whole explanation, but it was something I hadn't realised before.

The 'moderate' - or whatever the label is for the Corbyn-sceptical side of the party (basically most who joined pre-2015) - are overwhelmingly nicer people. And I've met several hundred Labour members.

KarlosKKrinkelbeim · 07/07/2017 22:23

There are also men on the list - but not very many. There does seem to be a message to women here. Toe the line or F off. See the statements quoted vis a vis luciana Berger - she will be made to take account if our views etc. All very unsavoury.
I've often observed how pop eyed corbyn gets when being given a hard time by kuensberg et al. Women are supposed to admire me, not criticise me, is what he seems to think.

Walkingtowork · 07/07/2017 22:24

I'm absolutely certain Corbyn would love his critics deselected, I guarantee he won't try to stop it. This last election result was ideal for him - he got more ammunition against them (by 'defying expectations') but avoided the actual hard work, responsibility and compromise of the top job.

My guess for why some young women are falling for it is that we only learn about feminism by accident with life experience, it's not usually taught. There's a hell of a lot of young men also on board. They seem to like their politics simple.

QuentinSummers · 07/07/2017 22:26

What??!! Are labour intent on self destruction?
I love Stella Creasey. Stella for PM I say

Walkingtowork · 07/07/2017 22:26

Karlos I met him and I don't want to out myself as I've told the story a lot irl but I was left with absolutely no doubt, he does not see women as his equals.

Walkingtowork · 07/07/2017 22:28

Labour is being taken over by people who have no desire to become part of the establishment which they hate, and define themselves against. We'll be lucky to recover.

PenguinOfDoom · 07/07/2017 22:29

I don't think it's only the left which has a problem with misogyny. The left may choose to dress it up by dismissing feminism as a classist concern so they can feel justified in opposing it, but the end result is the same - women lose.

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 07/07/2017 22:31

I am a Liverpool Wavertree constituent. Luciana Berger has always been anti-Corbyn since his initial leadership election and beyond. I attend CLP meetings on a monthly basis. Labour now calling for her deselection has nothing to do with misogyny and everything to do with her inability to support Jeremy Corbyn along with a dubious voting record involving air strikes in Syria etc. I am hard left. I am also a feminist. I have thought Berger should go for a long time.

Walkingtowork · 07/07/2017 22:32

Should MPs have been kicked out for an inability to support Tony Blair?

Walkingtowork · 07/07/2017 22:33

Sorry I don't mean to be confrontational

enoughisenough12 · 07/07/2017 22:35

I saw this and thought that nothing has changed. Misogyny runs through the hard left like the lines in a stick of rock. And yes, of course the right are steeped in it, but I'm a socialist and am so pissed off at this. Stella Creasy - of all the MPs!

KarlosKKrinkelbeim · 07/07/2017 22:35

Do you not have a problem with the tone of the statements being made about her? " she will be made" to agree with what they want? Is that language constructive or appropriate? What about the people who elected her - are their views irrelevant?
As someone who generally dislikes the Labour Party I could be happy at setting this mentality prevail, because it is damaging. But I'm really not.

OP posts:
BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 07/07/2017 22:45

Creasy was highly critical of Corbyn's leadership!

M0stlyBowlingHedgehog · 07/07/2017 22:45

It stinks.

I joined the Labour party specifically so I could vote to keep my local MP (who's on the list, is a bloody good constituency MP and who I suspected would be on the receiving end of this kind of shite). I'll be doing my best at a constituency level, and if that fails, have said I'd vote for my current MP as an independent (actually wrote back in the summer to offer my support).

AyeAmarok · 07/07/2017 22:55

I dream of Stella Creasy and Chukka Ummuna (sp?) being PM and the number 2 one day.

Imstickingwiththisone · 07/07/2017 22:58

Yes both Berger and Creasey were very vocal about their opposition to Corbyn. I really dislike the language that has been used about Berger though. It has echos of Liverpool's Militant past and does the party no good at all.

I really don't see this as mysoginistic. All the usual suspects have been included in the 'hostile' list including Simon Danszuk who said he would get rid of Corbyn and Mary Creagh who played a big part in the leadership challenge last summer.
