I have this app, but I will be deleting it now and I will tell them why!

We really need to vote with our feet with stuff like this. It is unacceptable! Angry

@Datun

Interesting page, thanks. Heh, I sometimes entertain the idea of creating a blog or something along the lines of 'A biomedical scientist debunks...' but I fear that 80% of it would be debunking transactivist claims about biological sex!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 15/05/2017 17:27

How on earth can a computer thing not connected with your body track a period anyway?

splendide · 15/05/2017 17:28

I the exact same way a notebook can. It's just writing it down.

sticklebrix · 15/05/2017 17:30

coleridge please start that blog!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 15/05/2017 17:31

Ooh. I get it. I think. I thought it magically predicted unpredictable periods or something. Oh well. Not magic afterall.

Datun · 15/05/2017 18:35

Yes, coleridge, do start that blog!

I'm sure it would be so interesting. If it attacks the ridiculous science underlining gender stereotyping, all to the good. But also, I'm astonished at people's ignorance over things that I would consider common knowledge.

waterlego6064 · 15/05/2017 23:30

That doula page is bonkers.

Doulx Really? Honestly, who could possibly be offended by the word 'doula'?

And can someone please explain what the writer means wrt doulx and latinx. I know what both words mean, but why is it suggested that using 'doulx' is only appropriate with clients who are not 'Latinx'?

I'm annoyed that I care enough to even ask.

coleridge · 16/05/2017 00:36

@waterlego

I assume doulx means doula or doulo but is a doulo even a thing and, with apologies for possibly being a bit sexist here, would many women even want a male doula?

Latinx means Latina or Latino. I assume using doulx (which they've ripped off from the existing usage among Latinos and Latinas of 'Latinx'), should be avoided among them as it might seem insensitive or like 'linguistic appropriation' or whatever.

I clearly spend too much time reading this sort of stuff if I understood it all...

coleridge · 16/05/2017 00:40

Oops...completely missed that you said you understood both words and now my post looks a bit patronising with unnecessary explaining. Sorry, waterlego.

waterlego6064 · 16/05/2017 05:52

Haha- don't worry coleridge, I don't feel patronised Smile

Linguistic appropriation- I think you must be right about that. But isn't it just so ridiculous? That there are now two words for the same thing to be used in specific situations. And what if one isn't sure whether or not a client is 'Latinx'? One shouldn't assume, and it might be a bit rude to ask in that context.

It's all just so exhausting to think about.

Datun · 16/05/2017 07:49

Doulo isn't even a word.

A doula is a woman by definition. It's not a role, it's a person.

Like woman.

Although this article says there are men who perform the same job, called 'dude-las'.

blogs.babycenter.com/mom_stories/12052013-male-doulas-is-childbirth-womens-work/

The article points out some benefits to male doulas, including offering unique support to the laboring woman’s partner. It’s also possible a male doula could reduce the chances of the father feeling “replaced” or being made redundant, by the presence of a female doula.

I'm sure the concept of a doula is appealing precisely because it strips away modernity, and takes us back to a more primeval acceptance of female understanding and support.

It's not an equal opportunities exercise.

splendide · 16/05/2017 08:05

Doula means slave

ShieldMaidenMamma · 16/05/2017 08:17

Holy shit Datun that's terrifying! "Got to make sure the man is having the easiest time of the birth!" He does anyway! WT actual F! !!?

ShieldMaidenMamma · 16/05/2017 08:21

Disclaimer: my husband was amazing during the birth, and yeah, it was stressful for him. But guess what? He (not being a man-toddler) was far more concerned about the person GIVING BIRTH than himself. (Ex husband though, fell asleep in the birthing centre during the final stage, complained of being tired and bored, and would probably have welcomed a dudela, further pushing the idea of me as human out of the window)

venusinscorpio · 16/05/2017 10:27

I saw a post saying that the reason that SJWs write "folx" all the time is some sort of inclusive statement. "Trans folx." Ewww, cringey and twee.

sticklebrix · 16/05/2017 11:48

Shield Our midwife told DH that childbirth is far harder for the father because they can do nothing to help Hmm

YetAnotherSpartacus · 16/05/2017 12:00

Because childbirth is all about men Hmm. A dude-las sounds like someone who would take him to the pub for a few pints while the fun was happening and bring him back drunk and singing sea-shanties or football songs.

A dude

Floggingmolly · 16/05/2017 12:07

...pointing out to them that they can be male and still menustrate
Except they can't. It's Biology 101.

MadameJosephine · 16/05/2017 12:18

Front hole? Womb mate? Birth worker?

ShieldMaidenMamma · 16/05/2017 13:02

Ha! Just the sort of midwife you bloody want... Ha. Oh well. Also, I'm sure my hubby would take issue with 'nothing to help' as well! We had epic midwives, who basically coached hubby in helping me deliver the baby, as it was clear that was what we wanted. I'm... uncomfortable with strangers at the best of times and they were totally sensitive to that.

Floggingmolly · 16/05/2017 13:26

Male doulas to support the woman's partner... Hmm. What the fuck does he need support with?? Some of this shit is laughable, others are downright frightening

MadameJosephine · 16/05/2017 13:28

I can just imagine next time I'm at work and a couple comes in and I say 'hi, I'm your birth worker, so which one of you will be giving birth today?' Grin

BMacklin · 16/05/2017 16:08

Coleridge we could use someone like you to help on editing the Wiki pencilsinspace set up if you are interested?

Don't worry if not , I just thought I would mention it.

Datun · 16/05/2017 19:32

Today 08:05 splendide

Doula means slave

Well, I didn't know that!

I wonder who gave it that moniker?

I've always thought of a doula as being a sort of wise, experienced woman. Certainly someone who would put the mother first. Maybe that's where the slavery bit becomes in.

NoLoveofMine · 16/05/2017 21:21

Got to make sure the man is having the easiest time of the birth

About time there was some consideration of this. I often think of the struggle my poor father had during my bath whilst, apparently, my mum just lay there in bed.
