Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Would you take your 10 yr old daughter to see Germain Greer?

I've never seen Germain Greer speak and have been a big fan over the years. As a university student in the late 80s I read the original edition of the female Eunuch that my mum had on her bookshelf and it led me to read more feminist literature and down the path of being a feminist. Given Germaine is 78 now I thought I'd go and see her before she retires from public speaking, as she's not getting any younger.

Question is as the post title. I know Germaine is known for being direct and her at times she apparently uses rather colourful language so I'm dithering between exposing my (naive about certain things) daughter to words she's not heard before versus going to hear one of the most famous women of our time speak. My daughter does know about feminism and who Germaine Greer is in simple terms. What would you do?

Yes. Like a shot. I might have to explain some things afterwards but that is all good.

LadyMaryofDownt0n · 19/04/2017 09:58

Yes 100% do it!

RJnomore1 · 19/04/2017 09:59

Absolutely.

ClimbingTheSpiderNet · 19/04/2017 09:59

Absolutely!!!! Envy envious

ClimbingTheSpiderNet · 19/04/2017 10:00

Where and when? Thanks

Xenophile · 19/04/2017 10:02

Without a second's hesitation.

She is an outstanding speaker. I might not agree with everything she says, but she says it with passion and conviction and kindness.

tigerdriverII · 19/04/2017 10:03

Yes!

GuardianLions · 19/04/2017 10:05

I would prefer my daughter first heard colourful language and got exposure to these isues in a feminist context than a sexist one - you could see it as arming/pre-warning her in advance. Maybe tell her before hand what to expect and say she can ask you anything she likes about it after.

AlistairSim · 19/04/2017 10:08

Hell Yes!

boatshed · 19/04/2017 10:10

I took my 11-year-old to see her in NZ when we were there. Well worth it - not too much colourful language. I'd primed her before but she said she'd heard worse in the playground!

DJBaggySmalls · 19/04/2017 10:24

Yes, absolutely. Its a once in a lifetime opportunity.

AssassinatedBeauty · 19/04/2017 11:00

Yes, I would. I'd probably talk about the possible language and encourage open chat about it. She'll pick up those words soon enough in much more negative contexts.

cuirderussie · 19/04/2017 11:51

Yes! I saw her 20 years ago and she's a legend. She wasn't especially sweary, just brilliant and funny and thought provoking. I even got to ask her a question swoon

BigDeskBob · 19/04/2017 11:56

I'd love to take my 12 year old dd to see her. She's questioning so much at the moment, it would be good for her to hear a radical perspective.

Also, I agree with "I would prefer my daughter first heard colourful language and got exposure to these isues in a feminist context than a sexist one".

Foldedtshirt · 19/04/2017 12:10

Definitely yes

cuirderussie · 19/04/2017 12:19

m.ents24.com/uk/tour-dates/germaine-greer

I'd even consider Ryanairing it over (I'm in Ireland!)

ILikeyourHairyHands · 19/04/2017 12:24

I've been to see her twice and I would absolutely take a ten year-old to see her. I saw her last year and she's still got it! Very humorous, warm and thought-provoking.

KoalaDownUnder · 19/04/2017 12:24

Yep. Absofuckinglutely.

Shortdarkandfeisty · 19/04/2017 12:25

Yes

PaddingtonLoverOfMarmalade · 19/04/2017 12:25

I wanted to take my 11yo but the website says 16+.

Whathaveilost · 19/04/2017 12:27

Thanks for the link. I see she is coming two towns near me so I should be able to make one of them.

FairNotFair · 19/04/2017 12:29

In a heartbeat.

Anlaf · 19/04/2017 12:41

Yes! And thank you for the link, I am booking now...

Floisme · 19/04/2017 12:49

Please do it if you can. She won't be around forever. When I saw her (probably 20 years ago) she was provocative but a bloody great speaker, very funny, fierce but very warm too - real presence. I don't remember any swearing, although to be fair, I'm quite sweary myself so may not have noticed. I would have definitely taken my son at that age.

venusinscorpio · 19/04/2017 12:57

Oh yes. And thank you for the link. I might take my 10 year old niece if her parents are ok with it.
