"I think this is why we are where we are. People didn't want to offend transwomen by saying they are not women. As often happens, once an untruth is said often enough, people start to beleive it. Now all the logical conclusions from saying transwomen are women are getting clearer and more damaging. Not saying things which need to be said because they might upset people is not a good tactic"

Yes. That's exactly it.

The reason we pretended we believed transwomen were women, was because we didn't want to be unkind.

Now it's because we'll be called bigots if we don't carry on pretending.

Ho hum.

vaginafetishist · 24/03/2017 20:40

I remember about 20 years ago going to a 'coming out' group for lesbians. One of the members was a very obvious mtt. I would say pretending and politeness was my response to their presence. I would never have seriously considered them to be a lesbian just as I wouldn't have dreamed of commenting that they werent female.

vaginafetishist · 24/03/2017 20:41

I think that kind of moving over and accommodation is what is expected of women and men are shocked when women like Julie Bindel and Germaine Green don't give it.

CalmItKermitt · 24/03/2017 20:44

He's a straight man and a fucking loon.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 24/03/2017 22:26

The wide variety of challenges to Riley is fascinating. This response is quite long and you might find his delivery irritating but he made several points which are similar to Peach Yogurt's such as Riley's hierarchy of victim hood and Riley saying traumatised women can work through their traumas.

He does at one point make clear he doesn't believe the 1 in 4 women will be raped but he can at least see that you can't logically argue men's changing rooms are dangerous so the answer is to allow penises in the women's.

His final comment is interesting.

DJBaggySmalls · 24/03/2017 23:02

LassWiTheDelicateAir At 7:30 The Egocast explains to Riley what we've been saying. He gets it. Men are getting it. And there are other videos by men all saying the same thing.
This has to be very good news.

venusinscorpio · 24/03/2017 23:07

My brother got it straight away. Especially when I made him think about it from the perspective of his daughter. It's worth tentatively testing the water with people. Raising awareness is key.

WobblyLegs5 · 24/03/2017 23:10

There's an article in mainstream (huff post maybe) media that disputes the 1 in 4 figure, says it was based on one faulty & biased study & alll other women groups jumped on the figure. But Riley et al use it as 'evidence' that women aren't targeted as we claim. I've not see it countered yet though. Duno if that's cause it's just bs or just knocks one study iron what

venusinscorpio · 24/03/2017 23:11

Then Riley is a fucking MRA. No question.

HelenDenver · 24/03/2017 23:24

That made me laugh, Lass, whilst being full of fair points.

M0stlyBowlingHedgehog · 24/03/2017 23:29

Re. the one in four stat - it's always interesting when you can arrive at a number with two different methodologies. The original claim was arrived at by asking women about their experiences. But American criminal psychologist David Lisak has interviewed men about their sexual behaviour, and he finds that when he describes rape without actually using the word rape (questions like "Have you ever had sex with a woman when you knew she didn't want to but you used your body weight to hold her down?" and so on) approximately 6% of men will admit to behaviours which meet the legal definition of rape (this is men on American university campuses - how representative they are of men as a whole I don't know). Furthermore they turn out to admit to, on average, about 6 rapes each. So allowing for some women having the horrible experience of being raped more than once, ball-park you're back at the 1 in 4 figure, arrived at this time not by asking women what they've experienced at the hands of men, but by asking men what they've done to women.

venusinscorpio · 24/03/2017 23:31

YY. Lisak's work is really important.

QuentinSummers · 24/03/2017 23:36

Thanks M0stly that is very interesting

JigglyTuff · 24/03/2017 23:47

I know from my own experience that a lot of rapists think they're not rapists if they're not waiting for random women to assault down dark alleyways.

dangermouseisace · 24/03/2017 23:54

exactly vestalvirgin I can't see how anyone can find 'fake' genetalia arousing (likewise fake boobs unless due to reconstruction etc). Surely it's better to accept the person as they are, in their natural form.

My first boyfriend was a bit of a sexy rebel which is probably how I got converted to penises being ok, being petrified before. He didn't give a shit what people thought about him/gender norms and that sort of confidence gives other people confidence to be their (natural) selves.

DJBaggySmalls · 25/03/2017 00:10

Riley is now dating a woman.

dangermouseisace · 25/03/2017 00:16

like most heterosexual men do...

CalmItKermitt · 25/03/2017 00:34

Yes I think I saw his girlfriend on YouTube, squeaking gleefully about how gay she is. Because of course a woman who is having sex with a man dressed as a woman is obviously a lesbian 🙄

God these people are tedious.

GinAndTunic · 25/03/2017 08:18

Calmit, can you link to that video, please? I would love some Saturday morning entertainment while I drink my coffee.

Thank you!

Gallavich · 25/03/2017 08:23
There are quite a few
SheDoneAlreadyDoneHadHerses · 25/03/2017 08:58

So. Riley presents as a woman by way of eyeliner and a vest top?

Dude. That was every sexy boy in my college. BOY.

GinAndTunic · 25/03/2017 09:10

Thank you! I am now fully caffeinated and will enjoy the show while eating my breakfast.

WoodPigeonInFlight · 25/03/2017 09:32

Love the Egocast video - kind, funny and true.

The video of Riley & girlfriend has confused me further.

In what way is Riley a "woman" other than makeup and a bit of hair tossing (which as pp have said plenty of boys & men sport)? What am I missing?

CalmItKermitt · 25/03/2017 09:35

Because he feels like one and he says he is one.
