This blog post really spells out the problem with self-identity and the fact that some men WILL take advantage

TERF: Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist, used to describe anyone with a functioning pair of eyes, a brain, and a dictionary who looks at an adult human male and says "That's a man, not a woman"

:) :) Patent that one!

CoteDAzur · 15/03/2017 11:32

Many people (myself included) see "cis" as an offensive term. I don't have a "gender identity". I am a woman: an adult human female.

Cis is a loaded term that suggests women all feel at ease and are even happy with gender expectations such as the color pink, littery crap, dresses and skirts, makeup etc. It is patronising and untrue, in my case and those of many women I know.

dangermouseisace · 15/03/2017 11:37

Mackrel you are wrong I have on many, many occasions told men to remove themselves from female toilets, often with swearing and sometimes physically wedging myself in the doorway to bar their entry.
(I used to go clubbing a lot about a decade ago and the loos was the one place you could escape men). I would have had no qualms and actually still would have no qualms in telling someone who was obviously a man, dressed as described to get out. However, if that bill thing goes through I'd be committing a hate crime and wouldn't be able to do that. That blog is like a peep into the future Sad

So when I apply for a job, is the application form going to ask if I was born with a vagina?! Yes, and it's caused me no end of problems! I thought I was pretty open minded but I feel outraged that there are terms insulting women for FEELING THAT THEY ARE A WOMAN.

Datun · 15/03/2017 11:40

'Cis' as a prefix to 'woman' is completely unnecessary.

When this all kicked off, their were transwomen and women. Now there are transwomen and cis-women. And as evidenced by many of the threads in the last few days, transwomen now merely refer to themselves as women and natal women as cis-women.

Transwomen have taken over the word woman and we have now been given another name.

Which is why I don't accept it.

Bundesliga · 15/03/2017 11:43

And where I grew up in the USA there was an almost cultic view that any man in the women's was only up to no good - there was a positive protectionist view of women's toilets that they were for the exclusive safe use of women and children.

ItShouldHaveBeenJingleJess · 15/03/2017 11:44

Oh great. So now 'real' women are a fucking sub-group? AGAIN?!! Nothing's changed since we got the vote. What does the 'C' in 'Cis' stand for - because I really hope it's not what I think.

Datun · 15/03/2017 11:47

They do parody women, and part of the act is that they emphasise it is men doing it.

I can't quite work out if it is a male/female issue or whether drag queens seem to be an entity entirely outside the normal male/female framework that can avoid aspects of sexism purely because, although they are sending women up, the way they do it sends them up too.

SpringyFlowery · 15/03/2017 11:49

Note the older woman asking out loud to other women what he was doing there. She was looking for some reinforcement and there comes - nothing!

Datun · 15/03/2017 11:50

Cis is not an acronym, it has some scientific meaning in Latin, which when used in terms of gender, means your identity aligns with the sex you were born.

One of the most insidious parts about it is that if women agree with their gender stereotypes it means they are happy with the oppression resulting from those.

BigDeskBob · 15/03/2017 11:54

Sigh, another thread where "feminists" talk about unimportant things. No one is forcing you to call yourselves cis women. Its cis non men. Get it right.

Datun · 15/03/2017 11:54

Oops sorry I posted on the wrong thread up there. Blush

CycleHire · 15/03/2017 11:59

I'm female and I remember being told in a significant way 'this is the LADIES' aged about 11 (30 years ago) when I had short hair and was wearing jeans and a raincoat. I answered 'yes' and proceeded into the cubicle and only then realised the woman thought I was a boy ... I probably wasn't much of a threatening presence though ...

HelenDenver · 15/03/2017 11:59

Cis, in organic chemistry, usually "on the same side of the carbon bond" whilst trans means "on the opposite side of the carbon bond"

I think the analogy is "gender identity and sex on the same/ opposite side"

But I refute gender.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 15/03/2017 12:00

Cis - did you think it was 'cunt in-situ'? :)

ItShouldHaveBeenJingleJess · 15/03/2017 12:08

spartucus I did think the word 'cunt' might be in there.... (excuse pun). I find it really confusing. Hate to think it's because I'm getting old!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 15/03/2017 12:10

it fries my ageing grey matter too!

ageingrunner · 15/03/2017 12:27

It's not cos we're getting old, it's because it doesn't make any sense at all

Like algebra. Seriously. I have a fucking degree in women's studies and this stuff makes me feel like I am in a classroom again looking at one of those equations with lots of letters in it that is fundamentally meaningless.

HelenDenver · 15/03/2017 12:34

"Cis - did you think it was 'cunt in-situ'? "

Love this.

"one of those equations with lots of letters in it that is fundamentally meaningless."

Hate this. Wash your mouth out Wink

CoteDAzur · 15/03/2017 12:35

Well, I have a fucking degree that involves algebra and still this stuff makes no sense. Unlike algebra.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 15/03/2017 12:37

Really? I thought it was all made up to persecute me. :)

YetAnotherSpartacus · 15/03/2017 12:44

LGBTQQIP2SAA - seriously saw this and had bad flashbacks to maths classes and that horrible equation at was all over b squared.

RakingUpBadMemories · 15/03/2017 12:48

Not sure how to respond to this one, in contrast, just popped up on my Facebook:
worldnewsdailyreport.com/north-carolina-woman-kicked-out-of-ladies-bathroom-by-police-after-being-mistaken-for-transgender/

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 15/03/2017 12:52

I have been queried walking into the ladies (only once Grin)

And i would absolutely confirm to a man in the loo that it was a ladies, if in a public place i would also complain if i could to someone else

However, if it was a trans woman...I probably wouldn't

And in the same situation i would probably be doing that dreadful passive aggressive muttering ...although to be fair i would probably be thinking "is this an American thing Shock'
