My MP responded to my email about the Gender Identity Bill

MP's are supporting the bill.

''Dear Baggysmalls'
Thanks for contacting me about the Gender identity Bill

I support the aims of this Bill and believe it represents a positive step for trans rights.
No one in Britain should be discriminated against because of their sexuality or gender identity, and I think the government could do a lot more in this area.
Ignorance is no excuse, and I believe the Government should draw up a new strategy to tackle transgender discrimination and ensure that any outdated laws that do not recognise the needs of trans people are amended.'

Chris Leslie MP.

Haven't rtft yet but my MP responded similarly. Said she was very proud of the government's achievements regarding rights for transgender people and in particular the progress made in the county I live in. Completely ignored the points I'd made. I stupidly thought that being a woman (and Conservative) she might actually recognise our concerns. I've been thinking about whether to bother responding or not. Either way, just one more reason why I will never vote Tory.

Ok I've come up with a social media plan using the hashtag #suffregette

I like that plan.

My (labour) MP responded in a very similar fashion when I contacted her the last time this debate was held in the Commons. She replied that she was proud of the government's stance on transgender issues, and now that lesbians and gays are so widely accepted (ha!), it was time to move the fight on to transgender rights. Clearly, she didn't realise that she was talking to a lesbian. I was so furious - she didn't bother to address any of my concerns whatsoever.

Hashtag is changing because I spelt it wrong Blush

See the Twitter thread for the actual details

joystir59 · 13/03/2017 14:04

#suffregette doesn't mean anything to me, sorry

GinevraFanshawe · 13/03/2017 14:23

Wow that's terrible! I got a positive response from my male Tory MP but I don't think he's actually going to do anything about it.

Thisisouting · 13/03/2017 15:26

Right I've started we're using #21Csuffragette but you can use something else the point is to get something trending so everyone needs to use it and it needs to be something that isn't easily dismissed as transphobic.

This only works if we are seen as one campaign individuals are easy to dismiss.

I picked #21Csuffragette because while we are not fighting for suffrage we are fighting against the erasure of women. That was their fight and this is ours it's all linked it's the oppression of women.

The fought, they died, they won. Similarly we won't be silenced.

Also all the obvious # are taken and we needed something unique. You can't just use #womensrights it gets lost in the Twitter storm of everyone else.

If you need a list there is a website of all the Twitter accounts for all MPs

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 13/03/2017 15:26

Suffragette is really only relevant when referring to women voting. The word stems from "suffrage" which means the right to vote.

Thisisouting · 13/03/2017 15:27

Ffs 2 days youve has to come up with suggestions

Thisisouting · 13/03/2017 15:29

You want to search Twitter for a unique fucking # that's not fucking transphobic.

It's the best I could do on 2 hours fucking sleep.

Stopmakingsense · 13/03/2017 15:31

#BiologyisnotBigotry?

riobruins · 13/03/2017 15:35

I think the hashtag is good. It's not being used for anything else. It has meaning. And it's not about what suffragette means as such but about what suffragettes represent, if that makes any sense, I think.

Thisisouting · 13/03/2017 15:38

#biologyisnotbiogtry is being used in arguments with TAs it's tainted and too easy to dismiss as transphobic we need something clean.

Thisisouting · 13/03/2017 15:40

If you use anything with gender or sex transphobe

How about #realwomenhavevaginas?
It is not that common I don't think. Has a nod to Dame Murray. Only bad thing is definitely TERFy although I don't believe transphobic

IrenetheQuaint · 13/03/2017 19:22

I'd avoid anything about 'real women' as it definitely sounds TERFy.

What about #protectwomensspace - there are some tweets already from last year.

So glad you went with suffragette. I know it was about women's suffrage, but the word itself is very female focused, not something to be appropriated, and reminds people that women's rights are fairly recently won.
