It's too vaginacentric apparently Hmm

In case the thread hasn't been deleted by the time you see this, it's here

'Ooffii Hardwick

Message from the organisers: Our intention is to make this march intersectional and inclusive for all. For that reason we respectfully request that people ensure that their signs and apparel reflect that. We ask that you do not wear pussy hats or carry "pussy power" placards. The vagina centric theme of the Womens' Marches was offensive and entirely exclusive of our trans sisters. Genitalia does not equal gender. Whilst we understand people's desire to fight back and react to Donald Trump's horrendous misogyny, we believe the best way to do this is to fight together and for each other in a space where no one feels unwelcome, and where those spaces do not exist for us to be the ones to forge them.'

There are some very pissed off feminists in Brighton now, judging by the thread.
It's meant to be a demo in support of Muslims against Trump's racist immigration policies so I am not sure why anyone would be carrying a vagina placard anyway, but not being allowed to wear the hats seems a bit extreme.

You're right, twogoats. It worked for me. It works for some new MN posters every time there's a long trans thread. Most people have no idea what trans activists want. Once their eyes open they aren't going to close again.

IrenetheQuaint · 30/01/2017 21:39

"And I'm absolutely sure Trump will start on LGBT rights very soon. And the marches for that will need numbers too. The left needs to unite. This nitpicking right-on Top Trumps is really stupid."

YY. The transactivists should concentrate on issues that actually affect trans people's lives (particularly under Trump and his cronies), like employment rights and an end to transphobic violence. And work with feminists and the rest of the left against the hard right.

The witch TERF cries have died down for a minute because TAs got an uncomfortable reminder at the Women's Marches that the average woman agrees with 'TERFs', not TAs.

'White feminist' is more cunning because it conflates something that is actually true (BME women experience both misogyny & racism) with something that is not - that TW are more discriminated against than biological women.

AskBasil · 30/01/2017 21:47

Oh that bloody meme "my feminism will be intersectional or it will be bullshit."

Well my feminism will be about women, or it will be total bullshit.

DeviTheGaelet · 30/01/2017 22:01

Yes exactly basil
Seriously I don't have the energy to fight all the battles. Being feminist ie for women is draining enough.

shinynewusername · 30/01/2017 22:04

Woman-centric feminism? Wash your mouth out Dev. What kind of crazy talk is that? Smile

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 30/01/2017 22:18

That meme gives me the rage. Because it's not about intersectional feminism. It's about centring TW. Because unless we do they'll commit suicide and it will all be women's fault.

venusinscorpio · 30/01/2017 22:20

Another here who really hates that smug wanky meme.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 30/01/2017 22:44

Meh, they always seem to miss the point of intersectionality so I don't get wound up, I just think 'yeah, your feminism is bullshit.'
I am all for intersectionality done right. I can't imagine posting a meme that basically just says 'I am virtuous!' though.

Flowers

Mine too.

venusinscorpio · 30/01/2017 23:16

Definitely.

JanuaryMoods · 31/01/2017 06:40

I was surprised at how many voices were raised against the stupidity of banning the hats. I found that somewhat comforting, given the battle raging. It's good to see that voices aren't just being raised on MN.

AskBasil · 31/01/2017 06:41

I think so many voices were raised, becuase most people are still utterly unaware of how outrageous it is considered to raise your voice against this shit.

shinynewusername · 31/01/2017 06:55

Agree, Basil

Celaena · 31/01/2017 07:04

Someone is very annoying

He's an anti pussy hat

Oh yes. Him. Lots of posts. I nearly replied "I'm not a man-hater. But in your case I'll make an exception."

Gallavich · 31/01/2017 09:03

That dude made a really gross comment about how some women want to be grabbed.

Gallavich · 31/01/2017 09:04

Prawn you sure yp want to identify yrswlf that way?

Gallavich · 31/01/2017 09:04

Typos!

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 31/01/2017 09:06

Not much bothered about outing myself. It doesn't affect my work, what there is of it. However I am thinking of creating a second FB profile.

HelenaHandcart · 31/01/2017 09:40

It's really important to centre the menz in feminism, didn't you know?

It's got to be called meninism now.

Women, really, you must know your place.

:steam from ears:

'HeForShe'. Can't have feminism without the menz. Emma Watson explained it all.

elektrawoman · 31/01/2017 11:39

Well this thread and that Facebook post have been enlightening. I had never heard of cis or intersectionality. I guess I am an amateur feminist. Am I allowed to call myself a feminist if I don't know all this stuff?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 31/01/2017 11:42

'Am I allowed to call myself a feminist if I don't know all this stuff?'

Yes. Most definitely.
I think in the grand sweep of feminist history online squabbling about gender will turn out to have been a minor division.

Elektra that's how most of us were until coming here! I have always been a feminist, as part of my overall liberal/left wing politics but have rarely (if ever) read about it so much. Someone else started a thread a while ago about how feminism has changed how they see so much stuff. I wouldn't say that's entirely true for me but I do find myself wanting to have conversations with friends about all this because so few people seem aware of it. Bit of a tricky topic to introduce into a conversation though...
