If you feel that you would like to do something more than discussing the issues here, please consider writing to your MP. A poster StephanieDA has posted an excellent link and letter template on the trans in children's and young people's services thread.

'"Autogynephilia" is a sex-fueled mental illness made up by Ray Blanchard. Blanchard defines it as "a man's paraphilic tendency to be sexually aroused by the thought or image of himself as a woman."'

I think such statements are transphobic.

Where do such statements leave transwomen who freely admit that they are autogynephiles because they think and behave in the way that Blanchard has described?

WankingMonkey · 07/10/2016 17:09

I think it may be worth including some clarification that, to gender-critical feminists, gender does not mean (a) biological sex or (b) gender identity (e.g "feeling like a woman"). To gender-critical feminists, gender is a hierarchical social construct that is used to control people's behaviour. This meaning of gender is more strictly gender role which, because it is assigned on the basis of biology, is also sex role.

I am trying to...step away from the feminist angle a bit as (unfortunately) people will see the word and assume TERF by conditioning.

I will add these bits later on when I have a bit more time to think through properly, as house is slightly mental at the moment as DHs other 3 kids have turned up so now we have 5 to deal with lol

Exactly vesuvia. The internet is there. Everyone has access. Autogynephilia isn't a secret.

Datun · 07/10/2016 19:51

...and I don't even care - knock yourself out. Just don't make women everywhere complicit.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 08/10/2016 11:41

The reddit sub r/asktransgender has over 33,000 subscribers. The "Do I pass?" sub, r/transpassing has about 18,000. Bearing in mind that you don't need to be a subscriber to lurk or even to post, I have no idea how one might estimate the number of users.

When I worked in magazine journalism we used to guesstimate that for every letter we received at least 10 readers had thought about writing. Gave us some idea of how controversial an article might have been.

I suspect that on Reddit it's probably closer to 100 lurkers and posters to every subscriber, particularly when the topic, as in this one, is sexual and controversial. Many users are likely to want their presence in such a forum secret. Someone must have studied how many users access reddit subs without subscribing.

TLDR: I think there may be at least 100,000 AGP transwomen using r/asktransgender. Search the sub for "panties" for some eye opening reading, and proof of AGP.

I have had an initial response from my MP. I'm not being ignored, which is a positive.

Brilliant treaclesoda.

Eebahgumlass · 14/10/2016 19:37

I'm in - my MP is pretty responsive. I'll be interested to see her response.

Dear Chloe,

Thank you for getting into contact with me with regard to gender identification.

As you may be aware, the Labour Party is committed to supporting transgender equality. It is clear that our current legislation needs to be updated and it is important that we hear from the transgender community about how this can be achieved.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), their survey found that within the LGBTQ community, transgender people face the most alarming rates of sexual violence.

The Women and Equalities Committee created a very well received and in-depth report on the issues facing trans individuals, entitled: House of Commons Women and Equalities Committee Transgender Equality First Report of Session 2015–16. In regard to segregated spaces, the report found: “We heard from Ashley Reed that: In gendered refuge centres, it is worth noting that trans people will often be turned away from ones that are protected for either gender, so a trans woman could be rejected from a women’s shelter but would also be rejected from a men’s shelter. Were they to go to a men’s shelter, they would be at serious risk of harassment or physical or verbal abuse, and that would be a major onset of dysphoria.”

Moreover, the report also found that: “The NUS stated that students who had experienced transphobic harassment in higher education were two to three times more likely to consider leaving their course.” If you would like to read the report further, I have included a link for your reference.

In regard to your concern of predators taking advantage of the proposed changes, UCLA School of Law's Williams Institute, a research group that focuses on sexual orientation and gender identity law and policy, is working on a study to learn if the proposed changes would lead to more crimes by predators. Jody Hermann, a scholar stated: "As far as we know there hasn't been some sort of, you know, devolving into chaos in restrooms. The only solid evidence of any such attacks in public restrooms are those directed at trans individuals, a significant percentage of whom report verbal and physical assault in such spaces.”

According to the Law Society, a transgender employee must be able to use the toilet or changing room of their expressed gender identity without fear of harassment. People should not be made to use unisex disabled toilets.
LGBT have a blog where Tran’s members can share their views if you want to read about the experiences of others I have linked both websites below:

Thank you for taking the time to write to me about this important issue. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any further questions you may have.

Yours sincerely,

Roberta

Disappointing but predictable reply. Apparently looking into if biological males are a risk to biological females.

But there aren't instances of 'transwomen' (or those posing as them) committing crimes in sex segregated areas apparently, proof exists of transwomen being assaulted in mens rooms though.

Another idiot who thinks sex and gender are the same, by the looks of it. And doesn't realise sex segregated areas are segregated by sex not gender. Its like banging my head against a brick wall...

marvelousdcomics · 01/11/2016 17:55

I'm Spartacus and I will be sending that letter to my MP. DD (14) is also Spartacus and has read the letter, giving me the seal of approval Grin

WombOfOnesOwn · 01/11/2016 18:30

There has never NEVER been a verified incident of an MTF being attacked in a men's room.

If you find evidence to the contrary, I will Paypal you five US dollars. I would love to go to some of these MPs and such and ask them to have their staff actually track down this supposed violence.

HermioneWeasley · 01/11/2016 18:38

wanking what a very disappointing response.

If labour's policy is to support this madness that's another party off my list.

Do you think she'd even sense checked her letter? The bit about th only people ever being attacked in public restrooms being trans doesn't even make sense. Th idea that no woman has ever been attacked is ridiculous. And no comment above us sharing space where women might expect some privacy and dignity - changing rooms etc.

Fuck, I'm angry!

venusinscorpio · 01/11/2016 19:07

They really don't give a fuck about women's concerns, do they?

marvelousdcomics · 01/11/2016 19:07

Same here, Hermione

marvelousdcomics · 01/11/2016 19:42

Not at all venus. It's scary and worrying.

My DD was learning about the suffragettes at school recently. She's actually saddened that everything they fought for is being replaced in favour of 'female penises' Sad (her words)

Datun · 02/11/2016 18:48

I'm still waiting for a reply to my letter. My MP forwarded it to Caroline Dinedage ( parliamentary under secretary of state for women, equalities and early years).

Isitjustmeorisiteveryoneelse · 02/11/2016 18:57

Well, in answer to your thread title, I only joined MN a shortish while ago and I definitely wasn't Spartacus then. I read lots of different threads, of all different types, lurking on some, commenting on others, but being a little disturbed that there seemed to be a transphobic miasma about the place that made me feel uncomfortable (I have long prided myself on my 'tolerance'(!)). However, as time went on, with lots of lurking (as many others point out, too scared to post sometimes for fear of being labelled intolerant), I feel I have been educated somewhat. So yeah, I am Spartacus, thank you.

catinbooots · 02/11/2016 21:18

Oh I've just seen this thread is still active Blush

I just started a new thread about the rubbish reply I got from my MP

MiddleGround · 09/02/2017 20:54

I am Spartacus too - who knew Smile

MiddleGround · 09/02/2017 20:55
