Just seen this Indy article and am fucking outraged. At what point did this become ok? I for one will be writing to the planning officers.

I've submitted a complaint to The Independent along the lines of my post on 4 August.

It's not an FOI as that's not relevant here but a comment that I am unimpressed with their underhand promotion of the "escort site". I asked if this was gullibility or were they paid?

I won't get an answer to that but I'll let you know what, if any, response I get.

Isn't it good that prostitutes are given safe(r) places to work?

AskBasil · 11/08/2016 07:19

It's not giving prostituted women safer places to work, it's giving abusive men safer spaces to abuse women with less power than them.

HTH

AskBasil · 11/08/2016 07:20

You also need to ask yourself why prostitution is so dangerous that "safe places to work" is even a thing. Clue: the dangerous men who prostitutes have to tolerate in the course of their "work".

Xbblcjr · 11/08/2016 07:38

So what's your solution then? Force all prostitutes on to the streets? Clue: you don't have one.

imwithspud · 11/08/2016 07:46

This is just awful.

AskBasil · 11/08/2016 08:12

No xbblcjr.

My solution is to build a society where men don't have the right to rape women for money. A society where prostitution doesn't exist, because the idea of paying to stick your cock into another human being's body in order to bring yourself to orgasm, when that human being doesn't really want your cock there, is unthinkable.

In the meantime, the Nordic model seems to me to be the best way to help prostituted women.

Don't fucking tell me I haven't got a clue just because you assume that a woman who doesn't believe in men's right to treat women as sex toys knows nothing. You're the one who is clueless, coming onto a feminist board and telling feminists they know nothing.

My work place is occasionally not safe due to the fact we are very untidy and there are boxes of title deeds causing trip hazards or falling off shelf hazards.

Many work situations (emergency services, social work, animal welfare etc) can be very dangerous.

But the difference is-in my office situation it's inanimate objects which can easily be moved and in the other case it is work providing essential and valuable services for the benefit of society as a whole.

Not quite the same as the dangers of being a prostitute.

VitreousEnamel · 11/08/2016 09:19

...lol ...a very clever PR exercise for their other businesses.

of course it won't happen lol.

Xbblcjr · 11/08/2016 10:48

So while sex workers wait for you to build your utopian society, what? You just cut them loose? Very feminist of you.

Felascloak · 11/08/2016 10:56

Please ignore the GF! Can't argue with stupid

I'd be fascinated to see if the stupid GF can answer the question as to how a so-called "safe zone" made Daria Pionko (RIP) any safer. But like you say, Felas, you can't argue with stupid.

Xenophile · 11/08/2016 11:29

GF thinks that RC isn't a Christian denomination, so, um.....

But yes, pigeon chess.

I'm sure this type of bar exists in either China or Japan. Can't remember which, read about years ago.

Xenophile · 11/08/2016 13:50

They exist all over SE Asia. Particularly common in areas notorious for trafficked girls and women.

Not sure that emulating the type of place men go to for sex tourist jaunts where they get to get sucked off by very young girls and women deemed 'too ugly' to be used in other forms of prostitution is what we want to be doing, is it?

Just how stupid do you have to be to admit to being a troll on the thread you are trying to troll? Epic! Grin

IreallyKNOWiamright · 13/08/2016 13:19

I haven't read the article but I've heard about it before. Unfortunately we live in a society where people don't care what goes on as long as the council/authority get their rent and tax etc etc. It's outrageous and goes to prove the lack of respect towards women.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 13/08/2016 13:26

This café is not going to happen in London so talking about Council tax etc is irrelevant. Brothels are not legal in the UK.

There are various vested interest groups who are calling for decriminalisation of brothels but I do not think there is any great interest in Parliament for doing so.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 15/08/2016 15:37

The reply from The Independent. As expected it does not address why they presented it as uncritical interview.

"Grey area" must have a different meaning too.

Thank you for contacting The Independent. We are always pleased to hear from our readers, whether feedback is positive or negative.

I am sorry to hear of your disappointment with this article. I do take on board your concerns over this piece, and understand that some readers were disappointed that we were not more critical of the proposed enterprise. We do mention in the article that the proposed cafe inhabits a grey area of the law and point out that brothels are illegal.

Again, I am sorry this article caused you concern. I have raised the matter with the journalist. Thank you for taking the time to get in touch and for sharing your thoughts with us.
