Sci-fi Rey from Star Wars, and Katniss Everdene. <poss spoiler alert re Star Wars>

I appreciate this may not get much traction in FWR, but having seen the latest Star Wars film, I'm speculating on the poss thread between Rey and Katniss from Hunger Games. And I'm doubtful if Chat may come up with responses.
Sooo..I'm suggesting that Rey could not become a Jedi warrior, in the Star Wars narrative unless Katniss led the way in terms of female hero in sci-fi? Allegedly Lucas had 12 films scripted back in the 70s BUT..I'm doubtful if he foresaw then the social change leading to Rey being a Jedi (though she doesn't know this yet - hence the next narrative for at least 3 films).
So am I being fanciful in thinking Rey is a legacy of Katniss, and if she is, what is the next step for her?
I also ask as dd is a fan of Katniss but hates sci-fi though for media studies she is being asked to have a sci-fi focus for GCSE Media.

And usually the women are too undressed, Wonder Woman, other assorted marvel or DV, accept Ms Marvel, still only in comics but great nonetheless.

TwoLeftSocks · 01/02/2016 21:43

Fantastic 4?

Pannn · 01/02/2016 21:44

Okay Dr - Serenity it is. Just read the wiki page for it. Many many thanks!
It's also in the library on the Int Space Station for entertainment apparently. Bit of a bus person's holiday you'd think?
slug - it's my dear little girl you are talking about. Fantasy?Shock Shame on you!

If vampires are allowed, you can do better than twilight, Pan, can't you ?!

Vaginaaa · 01/02/2016 21:50

Bella from Twilight isn't really the strong female lead type character! And definitely not the first of her kind in the sense of soppy romantic vampire teen love. There's a series called Night World that is quite similar.

The only similarities between Bella and Katniss are the target audience and the love triangle.

TannhauserGate · 01/02/2016 21:51

In the animated television series Star Wars Rebels the captain of the ship is Hera, and she is all kinds of awesome. An incredibly talented pilot, engineer, mother figure to orphaned hero Ezra.

Pannn · 01/02/2016 21:55

Twilight stuff..story...I'm a team leader for a group of mainly female 'hardened' professionals working in a v demanding customer-facing environment.....3 out of the 10 women had Twilight calendars on their walls. Me and another male manager looked around one day..saw who had these things up..and said to each other "we're missing something here, aren't we?"Grin

And I do think it was the Ripley character that paved the way for all women in the sci-fi genre.

There's a female lead in Prometheus, which is a recent 'prequel' to Alien, but it's a pretty crap film. Wink

Divergent is a good one to look at (and would probably appeal greatly to a HG fan). Female lead, female baddy.

Pannn · 01/02/2016 22:11

I quite liked Prometheus..Blush though I can see why others think it crap. It did star the actor who played Lisbeth Salandar from the Millenium Trilogy, who I thought was the ultimate female hero, so I could have been biased.

I quite liked Prometheus, though it didn't click that it was a prequel, or anything to do with the Alien films at all, until the very end. Quite graphic though.

I'm liking this thread, there are quite a few films in going to have to look up.

almondpudding · 01/02/2016 23:09

Can you do Rocky Horror?

Pannn · 01/02/2016 23:22

oh stop it almond !Smile
yes it's a gud thread isn't it?

fwiw in 24 hrs I've gone a long way from the Katniss-Rey thing, spoke with dd's teacher, got a grasp on other representations of female leads, made a plan re getting round dd's prejudice, and had debunked a notion that the FWR wouldn't offer much traction re the whole subject.

Am really appreciative of the ideas offered, and have picked up some film watching for myself, on top of dd's needs.

I know she isn't actually a human woman but what about Zira in Planet of the Apes, she was a hell of a strong female character in a sci fi film.

almondpudding · 01/02/2016 23:37

I was being serious!

DD would have that as one of her first scifi choices!

TannhauserGate · 02/02/2016 00:00

I'm not dissing Prometheus too seriously, I just find Noomi Rapace a bit annoying, not sure why!

If you're looking at other media, what about Zita the Spacegirl and Hilda & the Troll?

And I've just thought of Tank Girl (but disclaimer- I've neither watched the film, nor read the comic, so no idea on content or quality)

HelpfulChap · 02/02/2016 05:47

Private Vasquez in Aliens is a hard ass.

I love her. Maybe as much as Ripley.

nooka · 02/02/2016 06:33

Surprised to see only one mention of Fury Road. Great dystopic vision of the future and Furiosa is fabulous.

It's a fairly straightforward movie, defined good and bad guys (and one great heel face turn), lots of funny moments, some beautiful desert cinematography, a fantastic car chase and a bit of love. Plus it has some very strong feminist themes.

Also interesting to contrast with the first two Mad Max movies made 25 years ago by the same director.

Oh and as a big sci/fi and fantasy reader, especially of YA Katniss bears zero resemblance to Bella. Yes I'm sure that the love triangle appealed to the film marketers, but it's a fairly small part of the books which are pretty squarely focused on Katniss's inner turmoil, little of which is romantic. Twilight led to a large amount of spin off books (and a few shows too I think) most of which were equally dreadful!

I don't really see the Lara Croft parallel either, Michelle Collins says she was most inspired by classical mythology. Visually having watched a lot of Lara I'd say she was mostly about the bum.

PitPatKitKat · 02/02/2016 06:40

"How I live now" with Saorise Ronan was interesting- in the dystopian future vein.

Flawed but interesting. Elements of heroism, love story and journey, but mostly about how to survive, and how to help others survive. The quiet, steely determination it takes to survive whilst having responsibility for others.

Bit of a contrast to the outright heroism of e.g. Katniss Everdene. It does demonstrate a lot of the cultural assumptions we make about how it is appropriate for a female character to behave in the face of danger and tragedy, so it could be a good contrast to show how much of a departure different characters like KE, Ripley etc are

seeThereWeAreThen · 02/02/2016 07:27

Not sure if its been mentioned, but The Host by Stephanie Meyers. Is a very good book, the film was atrocious and very boring. But if your DD could read it then flick through the film she could get away with saying her research was from the film.

There are two very strong lead female characters in it. Plus a kind of female baddy. There is also the love quadrangle.
