Are you a big fat cissexist?

Because Everyday 'Feminism' thinks you are...

If this is the future of feminism then I despair, I really do!

Never mind the content, he's grammatically confused. It's a list of bad cissexist things and then it includes being profiled as a sex worker. I was trying to work out why on earth it made you cissexist to be profiled then I realised he really does write that badly. Not holding out much hope for the novel...

That article's really interesting Floris - some of my gay friends have also expressed concern about the treatment of young gay teens by the trans community so it's obviously not a unique concern.

Interesting to read about how the history of Stonewall was twisted... Sounds rather familiar

Now, to be fair, XX and XY chromosome pairs do mean something: a general idea of future conditions a person may or may not develop that are directly due to those chromosomal pairings.

They do not, however, concretely stand for any of the following: indicating a person’s intelligence, physical abilities, sexual orientation, development during puberty, appearance or make of genitals, or what level of bodily production of which sex hormones.

Ignoring the physiological stuff in the
Iist, this sounded a bit like it was an allusion to male and female brains to me. In a 'Honey pie, did you know that it is possible to get a female brain in a male body?' kind of way. I am feeling a bit sensitive to this topic after a recent online discussion with a transman who insisted they had been born with a male brain and a female body, with some pretty sexist reasoning, so I may be drawing conclusions that aren't there.

This bit annoyed me (more than other bits...):

I love you, but shut the hell up.

We’re talking about trans people right now, not cis people.

You don't love me, you don't even know me and this is supposed to be a feminist website so forgive me for wanting to talk about women.

It would have been better if the writer had taken his own advice at #19! Re expecting Trans people to educate others about Trans people.

Well. I think that boys have a penis and girls have a vagina - tick. I have never wondered why there are no tampons in the gents - tick. I have showed people pictures of my babies, hell, I even have some on the wall right now! - tick. I think that women are the group of people who might need an abortion, a cervical smear or a antenatal scan - tick. And I didn't click on the link. So yes, I'm a massive cissexist.

(In my defence, I do know the difference between science and maths, I do think all people should have counselling rather than making cosmetic changes to healthy bodies, I'm not massively bothered if someone mistakes me for a man from the back, I have no idea what pronoun proclamation is but I'm pretty sure I haven't forced it on people, and I sure as fuck don't have a 'dear little heart'. Perhaps there's hope for me).

XX and XY chromosome pairs do mean something: a general idea of future conditions a person may or may not develop that are directly due to those chromosomal pairings.

A general idea? Or a near 100 % certainty?? Assuming those conditions that may or may not develop are menstrustion, breast growth/facial hair, change of voice pitch?

I thought it was a big massive piss take.

No?

Asking is it a boy or a girl? So last century maaaannn!

Because most people now know the gender and name the baby before it's born.

Report
LineyReborn · 18/11/2015 00:08

Well they might know the sex...

I'm still working on my gender characteristics and I'm 53.

Boy or girl is gender. Male or female is sex.

I know. Am I missing something? Have I had a late night irony by-pass?

I need it in words of one syllable, Elendon. It's been a funny old night. And I do like your posts on MN.

If anything it made me want to be more "cissexist".....

I give this fashion another 15 years before it trickles away back in to the shadows again, leaving behind a trail of people having therapy because they were encouraged to mutilate their bodies at an age where they were still growing in to them.......

Boy and girl when referring to babies just means male or female.

I've said on the other thread - but it's pics of you as a baby - as in, not wanting to show that you are a transwoman now, because once you were a boy.

I also said on that other thread, that in my baby/toddler pics you'd be hard pressed to tell me from my DSes, because in the 70s we all wore very similar stuff (mothercare dungarees or nothing but a nappy and wellies if my pics are anything to go by).

And as to adult clothes, just go in whatever department you like and buy what fits! The separation between Mens and Women's clothes (apart from fit) is totally made up buy society, buy your jeans from whatever section you like. I'm a short, fat woman, and I'm currently wearing women's jeans and bra, but mens boxers and hoodie because they're comfortable, and it doesn't matter. It only matters if you have a point to prove.

Eh, everydayfeminism is barely one step above parody, and has been for a while. This is the website that characterises having a partner of a different race as you as "problematic".

Wonder where I've heard that sentiment before, huh?

I just went to see if I could find it, Countess, but five minutes of surfing listicles on "the erasure of asexuality and how you can be an ally" and suchlike wore me down and I gave up.

Honestly that site is such a pit of ridiculousness, which would be fine except it's a pit of ridiculousness which is dedicated to telling women (all women, whatever their race or sexuality) how they are Doing Feminism Wrong and how they can abject themselves to serve the patriarchy better.

If I wasn't on Mumsnet I don't think I would even have heard the word. I'm not sure whether that means that clearly I am out of touch and I need to get out more, or whether there is such a tiny tiny percentage of people who feel this way and see it as an issue that it's not worth worrying about.

I'm sorry I am being thick but whats wrong with baby photos again? I show mine off to friends and family. I am really confused Confused

And surely the point of fashion is it doesn't realistically fit anyone who isn't a supermodel?

Report
ChunkyPickle · 18/11/2015 11:06

We've all come to different conclusions on the baby photo thing, but my reading is that as someone who isn't trans, I don't even think twice about showing pictures of me as a baby around (gloss over that it's not exactly something I do a lot anyway). If your trans, then those pictures will be of a child who is dressed as a different gender to how you are dressing now - hence it outs you, and you can't do it.

It's 'cis-privilege' to not have to think about what could out you, and just live your life.

you're trans, not your trans - my English is going to pot these days I've noticed.

Maybe we should ask men not to flaunt their male privilege by going home alone at night, or by wearing trunks instead of swimsuits. Also, they should wear makeup and high heels at all societal events that require such of women.

And, hey, get rid of pissoirs, I am sure transmen feel it is cissexist to pee standing up.

Report
LauraMipsum · 18/11/2015 12:17

Funny you should ask Vestal, it is apparently not cissexist for men to pee standing up but it is cissexist for women to use a device that allows them to do so.
