Caitlyn Jenner Halloween costume

Here it is.

Apparently, it's transphobic to wear a corset as a costume now, because Her Highness Caitlyn has graced one with her holy presence on the cover of Vanity Fair.

I wonder how many will be brave enough to wear it this year.

Why would it be brave to wear it?
It'll be lads who think it's funny that wear it. It's more the idea that a person coming out as themselves should be mocked and to make money out of that.

I don't see how a costume is going to help anyone here. It's an awful costume. It's, as Buffy says, not very kind. It's not transphobia, it's just nasty.

Why would anyone market this as being ok?

Bearsbeets · 25/08/2015 23:13

Why is it different than a man dressing as a woman for Halloween, that's 'accepted'.

CoteDAzur · 25/08/2015 23:19

"It's more the idea that a person coming out as themselves should be mocked and to make money out of that"

How is that different than any other costume?

Also, I'm not sure I agree that "coming out as themselves" is an apt description of the photographic result of several surgeries and extensive photoshopping.

OP posts:
YonicScrewdriver · 25/08/2015 23:19

I wouldn't consider a person wearing this costume to be brave, I would consider him/her to be a bit of a prat.

Cote, it's not the corset, it's the Call me Caitlyn sash that's causing the comments, surely that's clear?

CoteDAzur · 25/08/2015 23:21

"Call me Caitlyn" is just making it clear that the corset is meant to be a costume representing CJ. I don't see the problem.

OP posts:
YonicScrewdriver · 25/08/2015 23:27

So you can't say that the comments are related to the general wearing of a corset in itself being transphobic, as they aren't.

Anyway, the costume is awful, as are many commercial American hallowe'en costumes (that same site sells redneck costumes with fake guns, nice) and I have better things to do than argue over a costume that we almost certainly both find tasteless.

CoteDAzur · 25/08/2015 23:40

I don't find it any more tasteless than an 80s Madonna costume - i.e. pretty tacky and awful, but nothing to take up arms and start screaming about.

OP posts:
ArcheryAnnie · 25/08/2015 23:41

I think most celebrity costumes are horrible, but this is no more nor less horrible than any of the others.

It's a US thing, isn't it, that halloween costumes can be dressing as anyone and anything, not just something "scary"?

itsbetterthanabox · 25/08/2015 23:53

Whether she had surgeries and photoshopping is irrelevant she was still coming out.
I think it's mocking coming out and being transsexual thats the problem. Just mocking a celeb isn't nice but not the same.
You won't see women wearing this. It will be men.

ALassUnparalleled · 25/08/2015 23:57

Well one difference with the Madonna costume is it is modelled by someone as glamorous as Madonna. It's a copy of/aspiring to look like Madonna - not making fun of Madonna.

These costumes are generally awful- the worst were the Amy Winehouse ones.

CoteDAzur · 26/08/2015 08:23

"Whether she had surgeries and photoshopping is irrelevant she was still coming out."

Yes, we all agree about the coming out part.

it's the "... as herself" bit that I questioned. What exactly is "herself" here, if its expression means several surgeries and extensive photoshopping, intentionally changing the appearance of her body to something she is not?

OP posts:
ChunkyPickle · 26/08/2015 08:30

It's mean spirited - I'm having trouble articulating why I have that instant feeling, but it's different from the Madonna one, which isn't mocking (well, not mocking anything but what some people wore in the 80s) - it's historic, it's not hitting anyones raw nerves.

Just as I'd consider a Britney Spears costume with a bald wig to be off, because it's highlighting a particularly vulnerable point in her life, but a Hit me baby one more time Britney Spears costume wouldn't (OK, would be bad for many other reasons, but wouldn't be mean)

I think, that this is something you know is off when you see it, and falls under the "don't be a dick" rule for living your life - no matter how I feel about trans or about Caitlyn Jenner.

CoteDAzur · 26/08/2015 09:06

How about a Kim Kardashian costume, complete with a big foam butt?

Is that also in bad taste, mocking a person, etc? I don't see an outrage about how people dare mock a woman's body and how she has chosen to modify it.

I'm genuinely mystified by the adoration and untouchability surrounding CJ.

OP posts:
AnyFucker · 26/08/2015 09:07

I agree Chunky. There's a lot I find jarring about the whole Caitlyn Jenner media circus but taking the piss just seems plain mean.

AnyFucker · 26/08/2015 09:11

Cote, there is "outrage" about objectifying the female body in certain circles, but not in mainstream media-obsessed ones I am sorry to say.

Two wrongs don't make a right though. I don't think it it is at all hypocritical to have difficulty with trans issues, but still not agree with hurting people.

CoteDAzur · 26/08/2015 09:18

I didn't see this as hurting CJ but as a Banksy-style satire with dark humour. If I saw a man or woman wearing this costume at Halloween, I would think that they are making a clever social commentary about media, acceptability, gender roles etc, not being personally mean and hurtful to CJ.

OP posts:
LumpySpacedPrincess · 26/08/2015 09:18

Any costume that takes the piss out of someone is horrible, the Caitlyn one and the Kim outfit are awful.

Don't even get me started on halloween outfits though, they are utterly depressing and are used as an opportunity to sexulise girls and women.

AnyFucker · 26/08/2015 09:20

I think you are attributing too much thought to people's motives, Cote Smile

WishIWasWonderwoman · 26/08/2015 09:27

I wouldn't wear it or encourage anyone to wear it BUT:

I don't think it's worse than dressing up as Madonna or Kim K.
I don't think it's worse than dressing up as a geisha, Native American Chief etc
I don't think it's worse than any other Halloween costume that is of a recognisable person or group that you don't belong to (e.g. I don't find anyone who isn't trans dressing up as a transwoman to be worse than a man dressing up as a woman, or a white person dressing up as an asian).

CoteDAzur · 26/08/2015 09:27

People are known to think. True fact Wink

I think it's a great costume and is bound to make people stop and think (once the initial shock and horror passes) about gender roles, acceptability, marketing oneself, media shenanigans etc. I am tempted to track one down for this year's Halloween but it would totally scandalise my name in our little town of athletes, tycoons, and trophy wives Grin

OP posts:
itsbetterthanabox · 26/08/2015 09:44

I don't like men dressing up as women or cultural appropriation costumes either. But I think honestly most people don't realise why that is offensive. They are aware that this CJ costume is, so there's the nasty intent.
Nobody who wears this will be making social commentary cote. It'll be laddy blokes who think it's funny that. You must realise that?

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 26/08/2015 10:01

I think many wearing it will think it's funny and taking the piss others that want to pay some sort of homage to CJ

CJ to some is a hero/heroine and everything she now does is meet with absolute adoration, Bruce Jenner was at one time a huge sporting hero and seems to need this adoration/worshiping

Either way it's gaining CJ more attention

I do not like the costume but bindi not think it will be worn only by those who are taking the piss

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 26/08/2015 10:06

bindi well that's a new auto correct Confused

What I was trying to say is but I do not
