Ooh ooh! Do I get to start it?

Wine and cake all round. And a celebratory burst on the patriarchy-blasting cannon!

Old pub here

Basically, it's bottled water, non-perishable food, batteries, sterno fuel for heating water (coffee a must!), checking that flashlights and camping lanterns work, charging up phones, kindles (for me), drills (for repairs if needed), getting cash, filling cars with gas in case we have to evacuate (we are on the coast), collecting copies of important documents: house insurance, pet vaccinations, etc. DH goes around and does various things with the windows, checks roof tiles, etc. We haven't had one for over 10 years so we are a bit out of practice.

SenecaFalls · 28/08/2015 20:15

Thanks for the good wishes. I'm sure we'll be fine. It's just a downside of living in what is otherwise a lovely part of the world.

FinglesMcStingles · 29/08/2015 13:08

kickass the android app has been shut down, because the log-in wasn't secure. They should have a new and secure iphone app ready soon, but android app is at the back of the queue. Can't cope with the mobile site on my teeny tiny phone so have just upgraded solely to get on here.

PlaysWellWithOthers · 29/08/2015 13:29

Hope all is well Seneca, it's the one thing I don't miss about living in the tropics.

SenecaFalls · 29/08/2015 14:16

Thanks, PlaysWell The storm looks as though it has dissipated some; I think it will mostly be a lot of rain for us.

kickassangel · 29/08/2015 14:52

Seneca, we have just returned to MI from Florida. Had a great time but it was HOT! There were days that it was 103. But I'm missing the sunshine already. When we go on our hot summer trips is the only time of the year when I don't seem to have low Vitamin D. Not sure if I could deal with living in Florida though - too much humidity and nature seems out to get you.

SenecaFalls · 29/08/2015 15:28

kickass It has been a very hot summer here. We usually get away for 2-3 weeks to western New York where DH is from, but we did not get our respite this summer for several reasons. I don't deal with hot weather too well so I tend to stay inside during the summer and venture out in the other months. I do live in the northern part of the state so we do get a bit of season change here.

kickassangel · 29/08/2015 20:14

we were wandering around Key West, Miami and Orlando. Some days it was 105 Shock We had a great time, but DD struggled with the humidity. It is raining and in the 60s here in MI today. I could live in 100 degrees (I prefer dry to humid though) or more tbh, it's the only time I don't have Vitamin D deficiency.

ALassUnparalleled · 29/08/2015 21:46

I don't usually venture into the pub but hope all goes well Seneca

SenecaFalls · 29/08/2015 22:03

Thanks Lass. I think we are only going to get a lot of rain.

We've been helping my brother secure his boat, and then we are going to open his "hurricane kit" which mostly consists of red wine and some of Islay's best. Smile

Empathy, to a boy like me, is repeating what someone says back to them to display understanding and compassion. No, I cannot say I have ever seen this done by little boys or really supported by their adults around them. Empathy is very big thing in that you are actively listening and recieveing and then unselfishly relaying that information back to the person. I find this hard for any child, but yes - I would think it is more allowed in female groups than male groups... where self assertion is so important in becoming a successful human male... many times you are reward for asserting yourself or expressing yourself (I can see the adults rewarding a boy who yells or puts himself out there).

From my experience I have had to actually ask for empathy from my young boy nephew... Asking him to repeat what I just said... so no, I believe boys do not do this enough and they need to!

PlaysWellWithOthers · 29/08/2015 22:55

I saw that Seneca, and I'm glad, I have family on both coasts of Fl and I always worry for them. This despite having lived there and knowing that they are super prepared, even down to having enormous generators ready to go.

SenecaFalls · 29/08/2015 23:13

I am relieved, but I've also been mindful that today is the 10th anniversary of the landfall of Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana. My family has been very lucky; so many others have suffered terribly, and this anniversary must bring a lot of fresh grief. A solemn toast to those valiant folks.

YonicScrewdriver · 29/08/2015 23:17

Back again, JS?

Relieved you are safe, Seneca. And that your DBro is well prepared!

NeverEverAnythingEver · 30/08/2015 11:04

"Empathy, to a boy like me, is repeating what someone says back to them to display understanding and compassion."

Parrots do that, FFS.

Glad things are OK Seneca.

SenecaFalls · 30/08/2015 13:20

Thanks, everyone. Smile

Wrote a long to-do list and done half of them. School looming. :(

ChunkyPickle · 01/09/2015 14:06

I discovered that the local FedEx affiliate doesn't actually know how to send a letter with FedEx (!)

On the bright side, DP went to buy star wars Disney Infinity 3.0 figures, and came back with Yoda, and a female character I don't recognise because he thought he'd get a more balanced mix of female characters! It makes me smile when he thinks about the example we're setting our kids.

NeverEverAnythingEver · 01/09/2015 20:38

My friend's local post office does not recognise South Korea. "There is no such place", they said. Beat that.

kickassangel · 01/09/2015 22:49

DH used to work next to the DHL delivery/sorting office. They could see his office from their windows. But they couldn't deliver to it as they didn't have a record of it existing.

Not sure which is worse - denying an entire country, or a building right in front of your eyes.
