Drag queens banned from Pride event "because they may offend transgender people"

“The decision was taken by transgender individuals who were uncomfortable with having drag performances at the event. It was felt that it would make some of those who were transgender or questioning their gender uncomfortable."

So... Very male-looking transwomen making women uncomfortable in toilets and changing rooms everywhere is OK because their feelings can't be hurt, but crossdressers must be excluded from a Pride event because they might make trans people uncomfortable?

Of course I realised after posting that mildly incoherent rant that if they talk about drag QUEENS then obviously the mode is outrageous female style, not male. Oops Blush

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 25/07/2015 16:12

Unless that's offensive to males who are gay? Argh!

marmaladeatkinz · 25/07/2015 16:30

cis-gender means a person who identifies with their actually physical sex

This pisses me off no end. Gender and sex are not interchangeable words. Sex relates to biology and gender is a social construct. Therefore there is no link between sex and gender, because gender is a made up thing. I accept some people 'feel' an internal gender, but even so it is not linked to sex. It's just a feeling. There is no cause...it's not caused by hormones, genes etc etc

Ruth Hunt described herself as 'cisgendered' on twitter today. It makes me want to cry.

happywannabe · 25/07/2015 16:56

Dear god our local pride march would be about 20 people if that was brought in here.

cigarsofthepharaoh · 25/07/2015 18:30

Drag kings exist Thumbs and they're normally portrayed by butch lesbians. My DP has done drag kinging before. But they aren't outrageous males, because what would that be what, overly muscular bodybuilders? Lesbians aren't generally interested in that. It's more about their gender expression and playing with the boundaries of femininity vs masculinity. Which is what drag should be, rather than a horrific portrayal of women pretending to be a parody.

Ubik1 · 25/07/2015 18:41

I don't how the organisers actually manage to 'organise' anything.

I suppose it's death by committee

BakingCookiesAndShit · 25/07/2015 20:44

Gawd knows Ubik. It's like some awful parody of the Young Ones.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 25/07/2015 22:59

Thanks cigars - so do drag kings just look like "normal" males then? Sorry if I'm sounding rude, I'm really not trying to be, only to understand.

BeyondTheWall · 26/07/2015 08:42

I know what you mean thumbs - drag kings dont wear male 'costumes' in the way that drag queens wear female 'costumes' (ie, outfits that women dont usually wear to pop to asda)

vesuvia · 26/07/2015 11:42

There are also "faux queens" or "bio queens", who are female performers who imitate drag queens.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faux_queen

How far does this chain of imitation/parody extend now? I wonder if there are any male performers yet, who imitate female performers who imitate male drag queens?

cigarsofthepharaoh · 26/07/2015 11:50

Every king I've seen has been in a suit with a binder, maybe a packer too. Which, tbf, would be what many of them would wear to a fancy event instead of a dress anyway. Whereas none of the drag queens I know would wear their female "garb" to a non-drag event.

But considering that drag queens are usually gay men and gay men are known for being quite gynephobic and misogynist, whereas most/any androphobia in the lesbian community doesn't manifest itself in a harmful, offensive way but in legitimate criticism, it's not surprising that drag queens are awful parodies and drag kings are inoffensive art.

cigarsofthepharaoh · 26/07/2015 12:00

I wonder how the trans community would characterise a faux queen. Surely in their eyes a transwoman drag queen (so born male, presenting female, parodying being a female...) is also a faux queen. Yet they aren't "biologically challenged". And they'd probably find the "faux" insulting too yet it's fine when it's a born woman who's faux Hmm

Ubik1 · 26/07/2015 12:27

Anyone else feel a bit old and tired? Wink

rosabud · 26/07/2015 12:56

I think I may have reached peak Trans with this thread. Drag queens, even pantomime dames in family sows, have always relied on being funny by harnessing and colluding with the way in which society tries to restrict the sexuality of women - particularly older women. Hence Widow Twankey will always have a moment where her enormous, unsexy underwear is revealed because wouldn't it be hilarious if a woman who was already a mother, or an older women, or an ugly woman or a fat woman was ever considered desirable by a man or even actually had sex! Unthinkably hilarious - and disgusting. I'm not sure what a drag king is but, if it is the equivalent of finding men's (particularly older men's) sexuality hilariously disgusting then it has to be these two marvellously funny women:

Would they be banned under the new rules?!

I mean, how much of this is really a problem?

I cant find it in myself to feel mortally offended by a pantomime dame or transsexuals. It doesn't impact my life in any way.

There's so much chest beating about offence and privilege these days. It seems such a conservative point of view; that problems can be solved by banning certain discourses or forms of expression. And the privilege thing - I didn't get the memo about that.

cigarsofthepharaoh · 26/07/2015 15:34

Ubik, there's no problem with drag. But the way that much of it is perpetrated reveals a deep-seated view of women as vulgar, unattractive, hyper-feminine to the point of ridicule, backstabbing bitches. That's the problem - I don't think there's an inherent issue with a pantomime dame or cross-dressing.

Dolly Rocket is a faux queen who performs in Brighton. She's pretty funny.
