Are most cat lovers female?

I am sure that there are some males who dote on their cats.

But it does seem to me to be a female thing.

Am I mistaken?

estimates are that between 65 and 80% of owned cats are female.

I am certainly not claiming the above figure to be authorative. However, I think they maybe indicative.

The cats are female?? Or the owners? Confused

Every more variables...

PuffinsAreFictitious · 16/05/2015 18:51

I like lizards. I also have a right hook Tyson would be proud of and have never had a "cat fight" in my life.

I also like dogs, who eat raw meat and bones.

Not sure any of those are indicative of anything at all really.

BIWI · 16/05/2015 18:53

My DH and DS1 are totally obsessed with our new kittens.

DS1 is gay.

Not sure quite how that fits with your theory actually Grin

(I love them too, but they aren't my new babies, like they clearly are for DH)

YonicScrewdriver · 16/05/2015 18:55

"But the implications of such an acceptance are huge."

Are they?

PacificDogwood · 16/05/2015 18:59

But the how can you explain the differences in our own society?

Well, on this specific board the answer is clearly 'Because of the patriarchy' Wink

YonicScrewdriver · 16/05/2015 19:03

"But the how can you explain the differences in our own society?"

Well, for one, you are in the ME and few other FWR posters are, so not sure which society you mean.

Are there more social stereotypes around women owning cats (crazy cat lady, children substitutes for spinsters etc etc) and men owning dogs (pitbulls etc - aggressive owner, aggressive dogs, blah blah)? Yeah probably.

Do I think that says anything fundamental about gender difference? Nope. Same as ratios of primary school teachers etc - I
Can use socialisation to explain anything like that, as I'm sure could you, if you chose.

When you say you thought you were maybe being a bit goady posting in FWR...?

YonicScrewdriver · 16/05/2015 19:04

Succinctly put, PacificDOGwood.

Ya BITCH Grin

partialderivative · 16/05/2015 19:04

BIWI, did you read my OP?:
I am sure that there are some males who dote on their cats.

I'm not sure I have a 'theory' actually, just some observations, backed up by a bit of possibly dodgy data.

OP posts:
BIWI · 16/05/2015 19:05

Well of course I read your OP. That's why I posted!

You also said

There is the stereotypical image of a single woman over a certain age sitting at home... owning a cat.

So I was giving you 'evidence' that it isn't necessarily so!!!

BIWI · 16/05/2015 19:06

Apologies for over-use of exclamation marks Blush

PacificDogwood · 16/05/2015 19:08
Grin

I'm a dog person, so must be quite butch, I suppose.

I think the language wrt cat and dog related expressions is quite telling as mentioned above, I don't think cat or dog ownership is divided along gender lines.
This is a totally, not-evidence based opinion btw.

partialderivative · 16/05/2015 19:08

I thought PacificDogwood's reply was ironic.

OP posts:
PacificDogwood · 16/05/2015 19:09

A dogwood is plant btw, ya pussy! Grin

partialderivative · 16/05/2015 19:11

I stand corrected and in the pussy corner Sad

OP posts:
PacificDogwood · 16/05/2015 19:13

Sorry, I am quite prone to taking the piss…. Blush

partial, if you posted this in Chat the answered would still show reporting bias because the vast majority of MN members are female.

I was not having a go at you btw. Or anybody.
The pussy was for Yonic Grin

YonicScrewdriver · 16/05/2015 19:17

I freely admit to being a cat person!

partialderivative · 16/05/2015 19:36

So, if stats suggest that more women than men own cats, no conclusion ought to be drawm

OP posts:
partialderivative · 16/05/2015 19:38

Causation does not imply correlation

OP posts:
YonicScrewdriver · 16/05/2015 19:40

That statement should be the other way round, partial, correlation does not imply causation. I think you know that, though.

meandjulio · 16/05/2015 19:42

My XH was a pure cat person, practically a cat himself.

I don't like having animals in the house at all, find it really hard to deal with. One of our many incompatibilities.

partialderivative · 16/05/2015 19:43

You are, of course quite right Yonic

OP posts:
YonicScrewdriver · 16/05/2015 19:45

In any event, that's not the socialisation argument, which is about the impossibility of proving anything is caused by nature when every human is nurtured in a society. But I think you know that too.

YonicScrewdriver · 16/05/2015 19:47

This thread isn't like you, partial. All ok?

partialderivative · 16/05/2015 19:47

Thank you Yoniic. It doesn't help my 'argument' that I should make so many annoying mistakes
