Feminism has ruined "guess who" for me

I was in a cafe with ds aged 4 today and there was a chest of old board games...I got Guess Who out and taught ds to play, but then realised there were only about 5 female characters compared to about 15 men. So I had to put it away in disgust. It's a shame as I was thinking I should get a new version but worried in case it's still as sexist? Anyone know?

And while we're at it, where is the outrage that only 5 characters are of an ethnic origin other than white?

In the original game there are 5 BME characters; this is 20.8% of the total number, 24, or 79.2% white. In the 2011 census of the UK, 87.1% of respondents described themselves as white. The US census found that 77.7% of Americans identified as white.

I think you'll struggle to find a general population anywhere on earth that is 81% male.

I should add that Hasbro is a US company, that did half its 2013 sales in the US and a third in Europe, maybe 10% Latin America and 6% Asia Pac, something like that. Lest anyone think I have forgotten about the non white majority in the world.

well silver its that some femenist forget that they are not fighting for only womens rights they fight for HUMAN rights for example if a president made it so that all men where slaves and had no human rights nor animal rights would you fight for there rights? also sometimes femenism kinda gives its self a sexist reputatoin one of the reasons is the name why not change it to "humanism" or "equalist'?, not that i have anything against that sometimes they sometimes ingore somethings like jail time no one cares if a woman kills a man well they do but they mostly give a women a lower sentence and if a woman rapes a man no one cares they just think he is a well how do i say this uhm.. a "femenine man?" and speaking of that men that have some type of dilema like pains, emotoinal, or something like that they are forced to "mann up" (video game refrence for any of you who get it :D ) but yea there is somethings that are harder for men and like you said "cant men stand up for themselves"? does that mean women cant stand up for themselves? just a questoin :D

MrsCakesPrecognition · 03/03/2015 03:51

I'm fairly certain that feminism is women standing up for themselves Hmm.

Not entirely sure why standing up for everyone else's rights should take precedence over women's rights.

rootypig · 03/03/2015 04:27

Iask, no, I'm not fighting for human rights - that is a separate cause. I am fighting for women's rights. My feminism is concerned with the systematic oppression, discrimination and violence that women and girls suffer.

Men may benefit incidentally from feminism. I believe that they do. But I don't actually give a shiny shit. In fact, I resent every bastard part of it, because they are so self satisfied, self serving and ungrateful.

If men wish to stand up for their rights, by all means. I would suggest that they already do. If the macho construct of gender that they collectively choose to uphold results in their suffering then no, as a woman, I won't be shouldering the blame.

HTH.

< Looking forward to see how this one pans out...>

CBA to engage with it myself but I know some of you love a good ole debate...

rootypig · 03/03/2015 04:55

Thanks for that, Nosy Hmm

PuffinsAreFictitious · 03/03/2015 05:25

I put that through Translate and it still made no sense at all.

Well said, Buffy.

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 03/03/2015 10:46

Fay, would you go onto a thread discussing the race of characters in GW, where the participants in the thread were predominantly non Caucasian, and ask them why they weren't discussing the percentage of female characters?

Or is this another example where feminism is supposed to take responsibility for everything within and without its stated remit?

^That doesn't mean that every single woman has it worse than every single man, because that's obviously not true. It means that if you take a person born into the same class, same race, same ability/disability, same sexuality, it's pretty likely that the man will be advantaged over the woman.

Feminists work to redress that balance^

That would only seem to work for women who only feel oppressed by sexism, i.e. white, middle class women. You should read the thread on feminism for women of colour. Women cannot help women of colour without addressing racism, they cannot help the economically disadvantaged women without addressing classism, and so on.

WOC face sexism as well as racism

You should go and read the OP from that thread again.

yea i just realised some of the things i said didnt make sense (it was like 12 in the morning :P and mind when i post this i really didnt read many of the replys because i just want to say yes some of the things is said is kinda dumb) and sometimes you do have a good point but yes buffy you do have a point its that sometimes in this case , one of you said that women are mostly depicted as weak and some times slow in tv, and yes that is true and it sometimes just disgusts me on how that happens, but sometimes they depict men as brutes, dumb, heavy , and other bad things and it is also that young boys are (sometimes) depicted as bullys in there school and it disgusts me that to say girls are most likley to verbally bully then again this is just something i heard about not actual fact. but sometimes sexist jokes are taken to seriously like lets say like a famous man says some type of sexist joke against women on socail media how would you react? what if a women said a sexist joke against men on socail media would you still react the same way? for me it depends, is the joke nt a joke and a real verbal attack on the oppistite gender? if it where just a joke i would smirk a bit but not so much of a chuckle would escape my mouth. but i do agree with some of you, and i really hope they will stop making men on tv, dumb, heavy, and being a narcisist and other things, and they would stop making women in tv look weak, dumb, and other things as well and to lighten up the mood have this ling c: www.deviantart.com/art/THE-BUTT-WALK-518269127

Oh come on, this is ridiculous! Think about it... There are more men because they have beards, bald heads and mostauches, so there's more questions to ask about them.

Next we'll be hear it's transphobic as there's only two genders... Hmm

GirlDownUnder · 21/01/2020 07:12

ZOMBIE ALERT!!

Bezalelle · 21/01/2020 09:27

It's easily solved by asking "do any of yours identify as women". Result!
