The Feminist haters are out in force in the comments section...

I'm fairly certain that the BBC site initially made no reference to Men only but has amended the page so now states that they're looking for tough men.

"I can't work out why you're not gagging to see a woman humiliated by trying to do the course and failing? Unless you're worried that she might have a chance? hmm"

Ah, the old 'men are scared of strong women' trope.

I would have absolutely zero objection to an exclusively all-female cast attempting an SAS-style selection process. Good luck to them.

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 23/02/2015 20:11

"However, if I wanted to know what the fitness tests are, I have only to ask members of my family. And all of them, with actual experience of these tests, reckon that this woman should have a go if she thinks she can, they'll be watching with interest."

Quote from Puffins. Talking about "this woman". Not herself.

Tell me more about how you can read as you patronise on about "family support", dear.

TheCowThatLaughs · 23/02/2015 20:41

No, not "men", you specifically. But I'm bored now and won't be engaging any further with you.

snice · 23/02/2015 20:47

I have a vague memory of watching a show like this in the past and seem to remember a woman making it to the final 3. Was it something like Marines training?

PuffinsAreFictitious · 23/02/2015 20:58

Dothey, you are an actual idiot.

Try reading the words. Not what you want to see. I even used simple words for you, not simple enough, it seems.

And while I'm sorry that my explanation of a previous post to another poster obviously made you all sad inside, it was the truth. I had made the same comment, word for word on one of the threads they started.

ChunkyPickle · 23/02/2015 21:01

Now who's playing fast and loose with numbers?

60 kilos in the pack, so lose 30%. Now, this conversation is going no where, but I just weighed my DP's trainers, and my trainers. His were twice the weight of mine (both standard runners), all our clothes are similarly differently weighted, as smaller people our calorific needs are lower (and higher fat percentage helps with endurance tasks), the medical kit can't be reduced, the rifle may or may not be, but certainly some reduction would be possible with no reduction in effectiveness.

In any case. You say women could never make it, so why try. Where is your evidence for this? The SAS don't test women, so you have none from there - you're just basing it on long standing tradition.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 23/02/2015 21:06

Hmmmm, realised that I might have left room for doubt and sneering again, let me clarify for the hard of thinking.

Many of my family have first hand experience of various selection tests for various arms of SF in more than 1 country.

If I wish to know what those tests are, I have only to ask them.

When I've spoken to them about this woman, (the one in the news item, not me,) they have suggested that this woman (the one in the news item, not me) should have a go if she wants to.

They have further said that they will watch with interest to see how she does. (She, being the woman in the news item, not me)

But I agree, it's nice that people who actually know what they're talking about are supportive of the woman in the news item not me taking part. I don't think they'll be feeling less manly if she wins it hands down. They might want to buy her a drink or 2 though. And I hope that the woman in the news item still not me has good family support.....

snice · 24/02/2015 16:59

Even though no one on this thread cares it has been driving me mad trying to remember the show I mentioned^^

PuffinsAreFictitious · 24/02/2015 17:04

Oh cool, I hadn't seen that before snice.

And apologies, I do care, just got caught up in some stupid there. Looks like it's resolved itself now.

ChunkyPickle · 24/02/2015 17:10

Interesting - I care too, I'd had a quick google but only found Marine stuff on Channel 4 which had also been restricted to blokes.

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 24/02/2015 18:03

Thanks snice.

snice · 24/02/2015 22:08

don't think my link worked before

She was amazing!

OneHandFlapping · 24/02/2015 22:18

Wasn't a very similar program made some years ago by one of the channels? And there were a couple of women on it. And one of them did quite well.

It was won by a man, but it was the women I found inspiring.

OneHandFlapping · 24/02/2015 22:21

Here

ChunkyPickle · 25/02/2015 09:20

Good god that woman is bloody fantastic! 43 at the time of the article, only been running 10 years, and she's been in all sorts of crazy endurance, multi-discipline competitions, races and challenges.
