Mine is Andy Murray. He was coached by his mother first and had to defend her against criticism. Now he has Amelie Mauresmo and was criticised by some male players for choosing a woman coach. Now he is through to the Australian Open Final and openly praised her in his post match interview.

“A lot of people have criticised me for working with her but we’ve showed this week that women can be very good coaches as well.

“Madison Keys, who also made the semi-finals here, is also coached by Lindsay Davenport. Hopeful that can keep going."

It was noticeable that when he was presented with his SPOTY trophy in 2013 by Martina Navratilova he called her "the best player in the world" - not the best woman player.

He may be grumpy sometimes on court, but he's put those who denigrate women's tennis in their place.

Kudos Andy Smile

Daniel craig for doing this

BoysiesBack · 30/01/2015 18:48

I was also going to say Adam Hills, love him!

Impressed by Andy Murray, I didn't know that about him.

OFrabjousDay · 30/01/2015 19:12

I'd also like to hear more about Richard Ayoade. I used to like him until I saw him do some kind of gadgetty programme (which I thought was a bit rubbish anyway) and he referred to two women as 'non-males' and seemed to think he was being cute and geeky for saying it.

messyisthenewtidy · 30/01/2015 19:43

Bloody hell invisiblecrown what are you trying to do to me?! That Patrick Stewart video had me in tears...

....when he hugs the questioner and is genuinely concerned that she's ok now...

.....when he links the issue of hyper masculinity with the harm that it does to men AND women.....

I mean there is a man that GETS it!

messyisthenewtidy · 30/01/2015 19:45

And YY to totally forgiving AM for his grumpy persona after those comments!

messyisthenewtidy · 30/01/2015 19:49

Ooh sorry to triple post but we can't forget the lovely Aziz AnsariSmile

I was impressed with this quote from Kurt Cobain:

“Rape is one of the most terrible crimes on earth and it happens every few minutes. The problem with groups who deal with rape is that they try to educate women about how to defend themselves. What really needs to be done is teaching men not to rape. Go to the source and start there.”
? Kurt Cobain

GerundTheBehemoth · 30/01/2015 20:12

I'm nominating Robert Webb for this.

DoctorTwo · 30/01/2015 20:16

I was impressed by what Andy said, even more so when he added "I want to thank Amelie for being brave enough to take me on and want to win for her on Sunday" or words to that effect.

grimbletart · 30/01/2015 23:46

Another thing Andy Murray said today: In a tweet, which I saw quoted on Eurosport, he said "More women in sport" i.e. he thinks there is not enough attention paid to them and he wants to see more women take up sport. On another occasion when he was asked which player he particularly admired he said Agnetha Radwanska, who you will note is not male Grin I guess it is because she has a multi-dimensional game like him.

Neil Pearson.

When I was about 16 he was getting or giving an award and the other person made, what was then seen as a 'near the knuckle' remark, Neil Pearson looked them in the eye and said, "rape is not funny".

It was the first time I had heard a man refute a rape joke.

I can't remember who the other person was, or what the 'joke' was but that has stayed with me.

TeaFor6 · 01/02/2015 19:43

Adam Hills was my first thought as well

alsmutko · 04/02/2015 22:57

Look, that Cumberbatch 'coloured' thing. He was actually saying, in a gauche ham-fisted upper-class way, that some of his friends (inc David Oyelowo) had to go to the U.S. to get good parts and that was a shame. Oyelowo said recently he thought it was very annoying that the fuss over Cumberbatch using an outdated word totally over-shadowed his real argument. Which seemed to be pretty enlightened.

Not that I'm advocating him as a feminist or anything, I wouldn't know.

GoatsDoRoam · 05/02/2015 16:45

I've been googling some of the men mentioned on this thread, as I read it. I am now all disappointed to find that Patrick Stewart is married to a 36 year old woman. He is 74.

It's not a crime, of course, and each of them is free to choose who they want to marry. But men pairing up with much younger women is part of the power imbalance between the sexes: women being valued for youth and looks and fertility, and men for power and prestige.

BlueKarou · 05/02/2015 17:01

I came on to this thread to say 'Joss Whedon' and was happily unsurprised to see him already mentioned.

Also to agree on the Daniel Radcliffe front - he seems a down to earth guy with his head in the right place.

I want to mention Tom Hiddleston, as what little I've seen of him seems to suggest that he's a good and lovely chap, but I don't have much evidence to back that up, and am possibly talking through rose-tinted judgment. He has donned a feminist t-shirt, and has shared the #HeForShe hashtag. Does that pass muster?

WorkingBling · 05/02/2015 21:00

Not a celeb but author Mitch Benn. I love following him on twitter.

LurcioAgain · 05/02/2015 22:23

I've just watched that Patrick Stewart video from back on p.1 and I am in tears. My grandfather came back from WW1 (yes, 3 generations of older mothers here, so a long way back!) shell-shocked. As far as I know he wasn't violent towards my grandmother, but he used to beat seven shades of shit out of his children, and it screwed all four of them up (albeit in different ways) for the whole of their adult lives. Whoever summed it up (up thread) by saying his point was that the cult of toxic masculinity shafts women and men was absolutely right.

"AWholeLottaNosy Thu 29-Jan-15 19:20:20

Sad how few men we can name on this thread!"

Well what do you expect? It's a bit like standing up and asking 'So, who's you're favourite black person?' at a Klan meeting.

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 08/02/2015 13:56

Did you mean to suggest that FWR posters on MN plan and commit acts of hatred and violence against men, up to and including lynching them, Dothey?

Or are you just going for a variant on Godwin's law?

"What's the point, they'll all turn out to have been raping their daughters or something. Every time you think "oh he seems like he likes women, he would never do that" - it comes out in the news he does/did. Ugh!"

No. Just reading what's been written in this thread; I used the simile for illustrative purposes.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 09/02/2015 19:14

I love Daniel Radcliffe. He's said he's a feminist about a million times. Good quote on the "friend zone" thing: "It’s a thing I think men need to be really careful about using... I definitely think the idea of friend zone is just men going, 'This woman won’t have sex with me.'”

Which is so true. I have been attracted to male friends, but it would never occur to me to be annoyed with THEM about that, or be annoyed at being in some kind of zone. Whereas with some men there seems to be a sort of blame on the woman for not wanting to shag them (because obviously women are just holes and if they DON'T want you it's an active insult to you as a man?) Hmm

SabrinaMulhollandJjones1984 · 09/02/2015 21:00

Love all these!

I was coming on to say Robert Webb for (amongst other things) his New Statesman article, but Gerund has beaten me to it Smile
