Mine is Andy Murray. He was coached by his mother first and had to defend her against criticism. Now he has Amelie Mauresmo and was criticised by some male players for choosing a woman coach. Now he is through to the Australian Open Final and openly praised her in his post match interview.

“A lot of people have criticised me for working with her but we’ve showed this week that women can be very good coaches as well.

“Madison Keys, who also made the semi-finals here, is also coached by Lindsay Davenport. Hopeful that can keep going."

It was noticeable that when he was presented with his SPOTY trophy in 2013 by Martina Navratilova he called her "the best player in the world" - not the best woman player.

He may be grumpy sometimes on court, but he's put those who denigrate women's tennis in their place.

Kudos Andy Smile

What's the point, they'll all turn out to have been raping their daughters or something. Every time you think "oh he seems like he likes women, he would never do that" - it comes out in the news he does/did. Ugh!

Really?? I think that's totally unnecessary.

Adam Hills would get my vote, and Andy Murray even though he's a grumpy so and so

weaselwords · 29/01/2015 19:00

Joss Weedon for how he wrote Buffy in Buffy the Vampire slayer. I haven't a clue if he's ever done anything that refutes this, however.

I saw the episode of Graham Norton (or Jonathan Ross?) where Benedict Cumberbatch said his fans were the 'Cumber Collective' because he didn't want to use the phrase 'Cumberbitch'. I adored him for that! (Partly because 'Cumber Collective' sounds so sweet).

I've seen David Attenborough on Graham Norton or JR before and sadly he was equally flirty/lecherous with the female guests then. I'd like to say it was a generational thing but.... Hmm

Patrick Stewart is obviously a complete hero & legend for his campaigning on DV.

The other one I am a bit ambivalent about on Twitter is Graham Linehan (Father Ted/IT Crowd writer). He has been vocal calling out sexism and abuse/trolling online especially the 'Gamergate' abuse of women in the gaming industry.
But I have seen other cases where he's done a bit of mansplaining to women online , 'no you're wrong, feminism isn't THAT, it's THIS'. Men telling women what feminism is or isn't is never a good look.

Sad how few men we can name on this thread! I sometimes think men have to have had a particular experience of life to be aware of women's issues ( e.g being a child of an abusive relationship, being gay, having daughters etc). Remember, in the list of 'male privileges', is that they are unaware of those privileges...

AWholeLottaNosy · 29/01/2015 19:21

Meant to say, the last privilege is that they are unaware that they are privileged ( as they are seen as 'normal' and 'natural')

FuckOffGroundhog · 29/01/2015 19:29

Joseph Gordon Levitt is a good one and I used to fancy him loads when I was a teenager

I really really want Benedict Cumberbatch to be a huge feminist ally. I cannot express how much I want that to be true.

No words big enough.

AWholeLottaNosy · 29/01/2015 19:49

Puffins, well if his view on women is as enlightened as his views on 'coloured' people, I kinda doubt it...

sisterbrute · 29/01/2015 19:56

I've seen Rufus Hound calling people out on sexism at least twice on panel shows

LumpySpacedPrincess · 29/01/2015 19:57

He wore the shirt Puffins. Smile

Who's your favourite (celeb) non-sexist man?
stretch · 29/01/2015 20:03

Matt Damon. Ive come across comments from him before. And how! How gorgeous is that Benedict picture!

PuffinsAreFictitious · 29/01/2015 20:04

I know lumpy Smile

However, it seems he is to be marked down as fuckhead for a mistake, for which he apologised.....

God help us all when apologising for a mistake isn't enough.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 29/01/2015 20:06

Daniel Radcliffe as well.

I know Puffins, when you read what he was actually saying it's just crazy.

ShipwreckedAndComatose · 29/01/2015 20:07

Joss Whedon for this quote.

Who's your favourite (celeb) non-sexist man?
PuffinsAreFictitious · 29/01/2015 20:11

Daniel Radcliffe seems to get it:

In an interview with the Associated Press, he said: “Around the time of rom com What If coming out, a lot of people were saying: ‘You’re really an unconventional romantic lead.' And so eventually I got bored of hearing that and kind of picked someone up on it, so I was like ‘What about me is unconventional, exactly? Like, tell me.’

“And she said, ‘well, I think it’s probably the fact that you know, we associated you with playing Harry, the young boy wizard.’

My immediate response to that was: ‘Well, the male population had no problem sexualising Emma Watson immediately.'"

Well, quite.

ShipwreckedAndComatose · 29/01/2015 20:13

That's a great qute Puffin

ShipwreckedAndComatose · 29/01/2015 20:13

I haven't background checked them to confirm their feminst credentials or anything but I'd add Richard Osman and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

Buffythereasonablefeminst do you ever worry you'll get cancelled by Fox?

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 29/01/2015 20:19

On Daniel Radcliffe, he vetoed his last rom com being called The Friend Zone because he correctly identified the term as being laden with a whole ton of entitled misogynist crap.

CuttedUpPear · 29/01/2015 21:00

Richard Ayoade again from me!

YonicScrewdriver · 29/01/2015 22:10

Ooh, nice one DR.

Just dripping this Joss link here...

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 29/01/2015 22:32

I agree with Marshmallow's point on Graham Linehan. I love his work and he often makes very strong points on Gamergate but some of his comments lack an understanding of his own privilege. He also doesn't have a great track record on female characters - ie including many in the first place.

But he is fucking hilarious.

Lottapianos · 30/01/2015 17:33

Would love to hear more about Richard Ayoade's feminist creds - don't know much about him other than his work on the IT crowd
