No More Page 3!

No big announcement but apparently The Sun featured its last 'bare breasted beauty' on Page 3 last Friday. If so, well done to the No More Page 3 Campaign, which I signed when MNHQ first made me aware of it.

The cynic in me tells me that this 'surrender' will just be a test. If sales go down then those babes will be back in all their pouty nakedness, I'm sure.

But for now I am celebrating, even though those naked images will most likely be replaced by young women in underwear and swimwear, because fully clothed women are still not doing anything newsworthy enough for The Sun.

*the countdown was for another rag.

They're still finding a way to show scantily clad women on P3 though. DP brings The Sun home from work if whoever of his colleagues bought it, doesn't want it (we use newspapers to light the fire). I flipped it open yesterday to see a full page photo of a young woman on P3 in black lacy lingerie (bra, knickers, suspenders and stockings) plus a few smaller similar images. It was news because she was modelling her own lingerie range.

DP brought it home again today and lo, P3 features scantily clad women, think it could've been something about bikinis.

So the wankers are still finding ways to feature nearly naked women on P3 under the guise of being actual news Angry

Seff · 21/01/2015 20:33

They've just covered the nipples up. Doing as little as possible under the guise of being 'progressive'

Is anyone really surprised?

ITV are running a poll - go vote !

According to Guido Fawkes page 3 is back in its full glory tomorrow. It's Natalie from Bournemouth Grin

WetAugust · 21/01/2015 23:15

Correction, Nicole from Bournemouth.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 21/01/2015 23:34

Well, lucky you Wet, you get to be titillated again.

Huzzah and hang out bunting.

WetAugust · 21/01/2015 23:36

Victory against censorship. Tackle the us sues that matter. Start with FGM.

WetAugust · 21/01/2015 23:37

Issues

mathanxiety · 21/01/2015 23:45

You don't see a similarity between a newspaper that makes the bodies of women (first names only) available to men who can afford the paper and a practice that hopes to make women's bodies unavailable to any but their husbands?

You don't see a common theme of ownership of women there, or women's bodies being treated like commodities, by men?

WetAugust · 21/01/2015 23:57

Nope

I see a lot of very damaging things that are done to women. It's time we concentrated on the serious issues, the difficult challenges.

WetAugust · 21/01/2015 23:59

Mathanxiety

You're anti Page 3 justification actually makes a good case against the burqa. I'll join a campaign to ban that.

WetAugust · 22/01/2015 00:00

Sorry - your

mathanxiety · 22/01/2015 00:01

It seems to me getting rid of Page 3 is one of the difficult challenges. The right of men to gape at women's bodies seems to be one that is being staunchly defended.

Sad you can't see the common theme of ownership and entitlement that links abuse of women no matter what form it takes.

Page 3 lives!

I told you so! Don't assume anything until you hear actual confirmation from a proper source.

Quote from Thu's Page 3:
“Further to recent reports in all other media outlets, we would like to clarify that this is Page 3 and this is a picture of Nicole, 22, from Bournemouth. " -accompanied with a topless photo of Nicole, on page 3 "between page 2 and page 4" exactly as Murdoch said.

WetAugust · 22/01/2015 00:09

Ownership. I can think of many examples of ownership and abuse that need to be tackled before Page 3. Try emotional abuse, enforced veiling, FGM..

mathanxiety · 22/01/2015 06:37

In what way is the exposure of breasts as a commodity not abuse of women, and a message to women about their primary function and place in society that is right up there with forced veiling?

Seff · 22/01/2015 06:51

The fact that you don't see how it relates to all those things you think need tackling and the fact that you are so insistent not to see it shows exactly why it needs to be tackled!

MoanCollins · 22/01/2015 07:36

Hahaha, I was right. It was a publicity stunt and it's back.

I am very sad that for five days this week I had true equality and no women were paid less than men, or discrimated against when they had children, or were forced into arranged marriages, or burkas, or were victims of domestic violence, or honour based violence. Because of course that all ended as soon as page 3 finished right?

To be honest I think most of the campaigners against page 3 will be glad it's back because otherwise they might actually have had to find a new cause which would actually make a difference to women's lives but be a lot more difficult to confront.

Seff · 22/01/2015 07:57

Yeah, fuck it. Let's not bother trying to change anything.

Food banks? Nah, no point donating because there are people worse off in the world, aren't there? And me donating food won't stop world hunger.

There are bigger problems in the world and I can't do anything about them so I'll just sit on my arse and point and laugh at the people who think that little things can add up to make big differences.

Obviously no-one here cares about women. Hmm

LikeIcan · 22/01/2015 10:32

So disappointed.

Oh well, the fight goes on.

& MoanCollins, they'll come a day when you'll be glad people like us took a stand against page 3 - maybe not you in particular, but your grandchildren & their generation. Because if we all had your attitude nothing would change.
I can't do much about arranged marriages & honour killings, but I can partition against the sexualisation of women in our daily newspapers, so I concentrate on what I can do. It doesn't mean I don't care about the 'serious' stuff - of course I do.

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 22/01/2015 10:47

I'm sure back in the day in America people thought Rosa Parkes and her followers were bitter moaning people who should get over it as there's worse stuff going on in the world.
Depressing Hmm

Whoreandpeace · 22/01/2015 13:12

I've seen this kind of behaviour before (from the twats at The Sun) and that is from bullies in the playground. Just saying.

There are people on this thread that don't seem to understand that Rome wasn't built in a day and that you have to tackle things in bite-sized chunks. Removing Page 3 is a bite-sized chunk. Once that is sorted then people's thinking would shift slightly. And then society can tackle something else and that is how progress is made.

I am sure we are all against FGM and other things those people pro-page 3 mention upthread, but we can surely fight for two causes or care about more than one issue? Being able to respect and understand how others feel is called empathy and if more of us had that then the world would genuinely be a better and more caring place.

I wonder what Elizabeth Murdoch thinks about her sexist daddy?
