No More Page 3!

No big announcement but apparently The Sun featured its last 'bare breasted beauty' on Page 3 last Friday. If so, well done to the No More Page 3 Campaign, which I signed when MNHQ first made me aware of it.

The cynic in me tells me that this 'surrender' will just be a test. If sales go down then those babes will be back in all their pouty nakedness, I'm sure.

But for now I am celebrating, even though those naked images will most likely be replaced by young women in underwear and swimwear, because fully clothed women are still not doing anything newsworthy enough for The Sun.

am glad page 3 is gone but let's face it, the world of newspapers and magazines as a whole will be gone soon enough anyway

but that does not in any way detract from the overdueness of this

morethanpotatoprints · 20/01/2015 14:54

I didn't support this neither.
Although i wasn't happy when ht called me in to discuss pge 3 being distributed amongst the y6 boys at school.
Much prefer this to whats available on the internet these days.
I pity parents of boys these days, at least we could explain that whilst not ideal its only girls posing with breasts out.
I'm glad i don't have to explain what they use as an alternative now.

forago · 20/01/2015 14:54

RM said he thought it was old-fashioned. Which it is.

I'm sure the builders will get over it. They can buy lads mags, soft or hard core porn to their hearts content - which is the controlled forum for it. Not in a daily newspaper.

forago · 20/01/2015 14:56

oh come on! your average teenage boy has more "sophisticated" wank needs than a pair of tits on page 3 anyway surely!!!!

BeyondDoesBootcamp · 20/01/2015 14:56

My rather cynical dh thinks they are waiting for complaints, so in a months time they can claim "back by popular demand"...

Hmm
BeyondDoesBootcamp · 20/01/2015 14:58

Or, are they burying the bad news that k.mckenzie has snuck back in...?

Won't somebody please think of the builders! Hmm

Result, it's a step in the right direction at least and that's always welcome.

My son is 10 and he asked me why there was ladies boobs in the paper after seeing a copy on a train, I asked him why he thought there would be be women's boobs in the paper?

He came to the conclusion they must have a baby that needs feeding! Grin

right, cos it's a straight up either/or thing isn't it Hmm

I wasn't aware we were "required" to give teenage boys wank fodder as a society?

As to what they will do now, I don't know, what do teenage girls do without a never ending supply of male flesh?

Or don't teenage girls have those urges?

Willferrellisactuallykindahot · 20/01/2015 16:15

The Sun can bring back Page 3 when it features an almost naked, cock visible through the tight pants, man alongside the bare breasted woman. Not a man who is a sportsperson/actor/singer who happens to have a nice body but a male 'glamour model' whose only purpose is to look good in very little clothing.

Oh and they can also print a patronising 'quote' from the man on the day's news as well please.

LikeIcan · 20/01/2015 16:20

Dancergirl - in supermarkets ( due to numerous complaints ) the front page of lads mags is covered up, I've not heard that has changed?

I honestly can't understand why any woman would think page 3 is ok & harmless? - it's quite often children's first encounter with pornography, & if it's in a daily publication that can be bought by an 11 year old, what message is that sending out?

Nancy66 · 20/01/2015 16:40

No, that's not right. Lads' mags are not covered up in supermarkets.

MadeMan · 20/01/2015 17:10

I don't know anyone who buys any newspaper; most people seem to use their phones these days.

I don't think Page 3 will be missed.

MadeMan · 20/01/2015 17:13

"Won't somebody think of the builders"

I'm sure most builders are too busy exchanging sexy pictures on their phones to worry about the end of Page 3.

BabyX · 20/01/2015 17:31

All they've done is cover the nipples. The girls are now squeezing their boobs into itsy bitsy string bikini tops instead. Page 3 is still there and there's still a sexy girl on it posing for your approval.

I think the problem remains. Here is a woman virtually naked for you to drool over. She's purely decorative.

Whoreandpeace · 20/01/2015 18:10

Those poor builders. Well, at least they can still see a naked, pouty "Page 3 girl" on their smart phones, as they remain online ..... As long as it's not available for young kids to see whilst out and about at Smiths or Sainsburys. This is one "institution" that I am very glad to see the back of.

Mitchy - I was thinking of changing my username for this thread to WhoarrrandPeace Wink

BabyX - Page 3 in the Sun "news"paper will be a carbon copy of the Daily Fail online drivel - the right hand column of shame that drools over female slebs and comments about their bodies as if they are just pieces of meat. That's a new institution that I would love to see disappear as well.

That did make me laugh.

Page 3 is as 'pornographic' as many of the painting hung in galleries nationwide.

Terms like pornographic should be saved for real pornography. To do otherwise is to totally devalue the word.

I just find it hilarious that a bunch of people are getting outraged about a newspaper that they themselves will probably never buy and are determined to ensure that other people have their bigotry thrist upon them.

I expect you were all telling yoursleves last week that #NousSommesCharlie

Sorry - people who are determined to censor our press are not Charlie - more like a bunch of Wallys.

fayyive · 20/01/2015 18:22

There is no credible info to say Page 3 has ended.

Last Friday page 3 featured women in bikinis (which isn't unusual as there isn't a Page 3 model everyday anyway), The Sun was then asked by The Times if Page 3 was finished and The Sun replied "Page 3 will remain between page 2 and page 4 where it's always been". Since then every media outlet (apart from The Sun) has been shouting "Page 3 has ended!!" from the rooftops.

A lot of people are going to feel like proper Charlies if it turns out the topless model feature continues as normal.

fayyive · 20/01/2015 18:23

As for the "porn" argument- breasts are not sexual organs.

fayyive · 20/01/2015 18:25

"I wasn't aware we were "required" to give teenage boys wank fodder as a society?"

The Sun isn't forcing or "requiring" anyone to do anything. The Page 3 models are all consenting adults. And "wank fodder" is your own words not mine.

WetAugust · 20/01/2015 18:47

Wank fodder

I almost couldnt breathe I was laughing so much at the idea that any self-respecting 11 year old would find page 3 stimulating. Grin

I've worked in a newsagent and never had any young person sidling up to buy or leafinf through a copy of the Sun.

Oh well, the Puritans were due a retrospective.

What's next on the target list? Bare midriffs? Grin
