I can't shake the annoyance at this comment

I've been toying with starting a thread since I heard this comment on Thursday and I keep stopping myself because it seems so very trivial. Here we are on Saturday and it's still bothering me so maybe I need to write it down and see if that helps!

I took a 'phonecall at work on Thursday, the woman was reporting that some of the street lights near her unit were out. She said she had reported it last week and nothing had been done, she said it needed sorting asap because "it isn't right to expect young ladies to walk to the car park in the dark".

It really pissed me off. The use of young ladies, the implication that these young ladies were at risk, nobody else you understand, just the young ladies. I'm being ridiculous aren't I?

And yes, all adult women in Germany are Frau. No one explained this to me until after I'd booked into a hotel and tried to explain to the receptionist in broken German that I wasn't married...

OmnipotentQueenOfTheUniverse · 20/12/2014 12:22

scampi are the elderly not often cited as reasons for fixing pavements? I think they are around here but there are quite a few older people in this Borough!

EBear that is just weird Confused and surely a big sign "scary men this is where you will find women" in a way Grin

I'm a bit conflicted about this. Like, I used to like having a guard on the tube (my line was the last they went so they were there into my late teens / maybe even early twenties) and I did used to get the carriage with the guard, it wasn't women only though. In some countries where casual sexual assault is rife, they do have women only carriages and things as there is a massive likelihood something will happen and I don't think that's a bad thing given the risk in those areas.

I definitely would think it weird and unnecessary to have a women only space in a car park though.

Dunno. Grin

OmnipotentQueenOfTheUniverse · 20/12/2014 12:23

lol @ my failure to know any german I assumed "frauen" was like "miss" !!

OmnipotentQueenOfTheUniverse · 20/12/2014 12:26

it's frauline (sp) isn't it.

Idiotdh · 20/12/2014 12:28

Just because she didn't include anyone else doesn't make it a bad comment...of course lighting is to protect everyone especially the vulnerable. Car parks are common places of attack.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 20/12/2014 12:28

Given the number of appeals for information about men sexually assaulting women on the Tube, I idly wonder how long it will be before there are women only carriages here too.

I lived on a road which had had faulty street lighting for 2 years. In the end, a number of people had to report the fault to the landowner. No mention of ladies and their need for protection, but everyone was sick of the huge number of criminals breaking and entering gardens/sheds and things being stolen. Crims love darkness. All kinds of crims like darkness, not just the ones who prey on young ladies....

WorriedMutha · 20/12/2014 12:43

Sigh. Note to self not to click on threads appearing under active but stemming from feminist chat. Pops back to the real world.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 20/12/2014 12:48

All the lulz @ AIBU being even in the same universe as 'the real world'

EBearhug · 20/12/2014 13:57

Frau = adult woman title, Fraulein = girl title. All adult women are Frau. Which is a lot easier than the whole Miss/Mrs/Ms mess we have (see threads passim.)

And yes, car parks may be common places of attack, but what increases a driver's vulnerability is parking in a dark, shadowy corner where there isn't much visibility from other parts of the car park. That's as much risk to male drivers as to female drivers, and if you want to improve the safety, you need to focus on the lighting, CCTV, access to the carpark and so on, rather than whether a driver is male or female. Just like improving streetlighting improves the safety of everyone in that street, not just women.

TooOldForGlitter · 20/12/2014 14:12

Oh I never realised posting here meant I wasn't in the real world. Weird.

In our car park as well as Frauen parking spaces up near the entrance there's also a Frauen arm button at the far end. I don't take umbrage at it. Xmas Confused

Fuckmath · 20/12/2014 14:28

Yabu

A woman reported this to you and it sounds like the lack of lighting is making her feel unsafe and she wants it fixed for her and others. That is legitimate. I would also feel wary.

I don't see what she has done wrong.

Idiotdh · 20/12/2014 14:46

Yes..glad you agree EBear.
Are the lights going to be fixed?

Trills · 20/12/2014 15:01

It is irritating, I agree.

I also agree with scampidoodle about people wanting to say that the are complaining for someone else rather than saying that it's for them.

southeastastra · 20/12/2014 15:08

this isn't even in AIBU Confused

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 20/12/2014 15:12

The woman's a dinosaur but would I really worry myself about that for a few days? Erm no.

I might put a bit of effort to getting the lighting fixed. It's clearly been a problem for a while and badly lit car parks are dangerous for all sorts of reasons: car jacking, mugging, assault are just three.

Buffy.. Overthinking it means obsessing over a trivial / easily resolved subject which should only be taking up a small amt of brain power/ time..either because of neurosis or ruminating etc

It doesn't mean other people are not thinking enough, no.

If it takes someone an hour to decide between two different types of tomato when online shopping..does it mean everyone else is being far too foolhardy just plumping straight for Santorini in two seconds?

EBearhug · 20/12/2014 15:36

Buffy, Ernest's post said, "there's also a Frauen arm button" - as I have no idea what that even is, I can't decide whether I would take umbrage or not.

Well in this instance it seems a clear case of thinking too long about it rather than she could for example have just said" Ill fix the lights for health and safety for all"
Disclaimer. Am quite bored.
