A fb friend has just posted this article, saying there's a lot of truth in it:

I've read it and it's made me hopping mad. Please tell me it's not just me?

Men are more able to go it alone? Really? Look around at the men and women who lose their partners through death. See the numbers of men who remarry or find another partner after about two years (there are five in my family circle alone). Then examine how many widows remarry…..None in my family circle. The reason they give? Not against marriage, miss their partners but are enjoying their new-found independence.

Because the topic of who is actually forced in to marital slavery and who is a bleating, self pitying windbag became more interesting.

Milo Yiannopoulos's story shows us just how important it is that we back up arguments with facts. Because he hasn't done at all - it's a litany of assertions about a mass movement of men that just doesn't stack up, because there is no evidence that any significant numbers of men are involved in a 'Sexodus'. It's just an article hung on a portmanteau word.

And yes Bobby, but she's tying in with a lot of MRA type beliefs, and I would suggest that those men and their poor, unhappy womenfolk would just lap it up. They don't seem to be into facts... more 'things that we can get riled at women about'

Which region in Ethiopia as it has both Christian and Muslim areas and then the discussion just goes back to the 'is it cultural or is it religion'

Amhara region, which is predominantly Orthodox Christian.

What the study seems to show is that religion has very little to do with it. What are huge indicators are poverty and the education level of the girls.

Unfortunately this is something that afflicts a lot of Africa, development, education, empowering women through giving them opportunities to make their own money, its a slow process.

I have heard horror stories when working in the region where a male member has died, and then other male family members have sort to kick the wife and kids off the land and grab it. Which leads to another problem that needs to be sorted i.e land ownership.

In terms of religion though take up of Islam is growing on this continent and I sometimes feel this is because it fits better to cultural norms than Christianity, and can be used by men to justify a lower/different status. It can then become a bulwark to empowering women.

I think, from a truly hideous night's reading that seeing this as a Muslim problem is simplistic. 40% of the world's child marriages happen in India. I also see land ownership as a different, if related topic.

I'm going to stop derailing this thread though, and start another.

Women have been traded in all forms across all nations,across all time with various 'justifications' given.

Its a cultural issue which I think growing Islam will help entrench and gives men more 'evidence' than Christianity to preserve these customs. It can hinder western development agencies saying they aren't respecting them etc.

I agree Christians aren't saints either - still holding on to only men being able to communicate and interpret the bible.
