I have decided to write to make clear why the vast majority of exited prostituted folks hate the expression "sex worker", for much that has been written is untrue or deeply insulting to the prostituted class
I have been campaigning as an exited prostituted woman for about 10 years, and help to found Survivors United, an international campaigning group of people who survive the sex trade (with around 177 members). This group , and SPACE - another international group of survivors of the sex trade - all feel the term sex work is a completely unacceptable.
It need to understood that the term sex work or sex worker is the acceptable term of the sex trade profiteers, and was very likely invented by them to keep invisible the normal hate and violence in all aspects of the sex trade, including all forms of prostitution.
We want the term prostituted woman/man to be used, not to say prostitute. To say prostitute is lay the blame onto the women/man who is in the sex trade, and make invisible the agents of oppression that is the punters and sex trade profiteers.
It has been said on this thread that we should only use the term the individual prostituted women/man uses. That is only true, if you refuse to look with a clear eye at how the structure of prostitution is made.
The sex trade is extremely skilled at mental abuse, in breaking down the prostitution, and forcing the language of their oppression into them. The major reason that most of the prostituted will say they are sex workers, is because they have no other language that fits their reality.
It is natural when you embedded in prostitution, to block out as much of reality as possible. This means refusing to accept the normal violence, refusing to know how many of the prostituted just disappear - and letting in the lies and propaganda of the sex trade instead. To know the full reality of being prostituted is impossible to live with, especially when there appears to be no exit or hope.
Please think before you say the only real issue is that society stigmatises the prostituted. If there is stigma, it is nowhere as serious knowing at any time or any place a punter or sex trade profiteer will rape, beat, torture or murder the prostituted.
Most of so-called stigma is the lies poured into the prostituted by sex trade profiteers and punters. These lies will keep the prostituted as sub-human sexual goods, and say no-one outside the sex trade care if they are alive or dead. It is used to prevent the prostituted from seeking help or having self-esteem.
It is important to never to use terms like forced sex worker, or such like terms that promote these lies.
Another myth that has been express here, is that by some miracle prostitution can be made safer or at least safe enough to not look too deeply at the conditions, if it is placed indoors.
This is nonsense - it is an upside-down way of seeing vaw. When we look at male violence for non-prostituted women and girls, we know that most women are in danger indoors and with men that they know. But, we refuse to see that with prostituted women.
Instead we imagine that it can made safe to put the prostituted alone in a room with a punter who they very little about. I only did indoors prostitution - and I do not ever not being totally aware that any time and in place a punter could be as sadist as he wants, and there would no help or even interest in my welfare. I was nearly murdered at least four, I cannot know or count how many times I was raped, including many gang rapes, and was often sexually tortured. This was the norm for indoors prostitution - but the sex trade is very effective at making sure you do not look behind the closed doors of brothels, hotels, flats, rooms etc.
One terrible myth said here is that murders of the prostituted is rare. It is considered that the prostituted are likely to die a violent death about 40 times more than women of similar age or background. It is normal for the sex trade profiteers to make the prostituted disappear. The murders of the prostituted is so common, that it not worth reporting unless it is considered sensational, usually that means a serial murderer. But the common murders of the prostituted is made to unimportant.
It is also not true that most of the prostituted here did not enter the sex trade when they were adults. The normal age that prostituted women enter the sex trade is 12-15, for the sex trade in every country and culture is built on supplying young flesh. Most punters want as young as possible.
I could on and on and on - but I am tired.
